I could tell a difference right away when the tribute came in. It a little more bite to it and even playing clean they were hitting edge of break up and especially on the G B and E strings you could here it. Which is not a bad thing. It kinda had that Angus Young sound and let’s face it his sound is the SG sound. SG Standard and the Marshall Super Leads!!! All around great video brother. I subscribed as soon as it was over!
Love the SG's. I've been going threw some rough times lately with a family member and your music has been a big help, I'm a huge fan of the SG's and the Les Paul Custom Showcase Edition thoughs guitars rock, Oh and I got my new 19' sg standard trubute yesterday from Long & Mcquade. I told them at Long & Mcquades they owe it to Ryan from TriCrow Studios cause it was him that sold me on buying that guitar and probably a Marshall Amp here soon down the road.
Just found out I love the SG. Never really played one. Bought a used Epiphone SG on a lark for $300 and discovered I loved it. So, I bought a brand new Gibson SG Standard last night.
Congrats. I found out how much i love the sg by surprise when I tried one for first time. I have a 2006 black standard sg and looking forward to my 2021 raven tribute to arrive today :)
Great review and superb playing! I suspect the Tribute has cheaper pots and capacitors mounted on a circuit board and that’s why the Tribute has a tad less presence. I bet the Standard has 500k CTS with some orange drop capacitors. That makes a quite big difference. Maybe 50s wiring on Standard and modern wiring on Tribute. Also making the Standard brighter.
Great. unbiased and substantive review. Try by yourself and get the one that fits your needs. I think the both guitars are great. The more important factor IMO in which to choose is a factory flaws factor. Check the guitar before you buy - even if this is a Gibson
If you ever manage to get hands on an early 2000s model I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Aside from the craftsmanship and materials, find it the perfect blend of worn in, but still like new, with the right example of course.
I have a '99 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe 30th Anniversary and a '00 Gibson ES 335 with a nice figured top on it. They are both well made. I find that the current regime of Gibson is doing a great job quality-wise as well. Cheers -Ryan
Great demo! I have two 61 standards but picked up a tribute today - found a used one for cheap so grabbed it. It’s brighter than my standards and more resonant - not 100% sure why but I think the maple neck really helps - it’s lighter too. To my ears, the standard sounded better defined overall but the tribute absolutely KILLED in the “swampy” section. I like the changes you made - looks less like a “student” model. Amazing what a bit of plastic and covers can do! Thanks for the demo.
awesome playing. I just bought an SG Raven Tribute. I just love the satin finish. The gloss on the neck of the standard felt too "sticky" to me. The only things I didnt love about the tribute was that it didnt have the trapezoid neck inlays and had uncovered pickups, but with the raven the dots are black on black so I don't even notice them, and uncovered black pickups just goes with the all black aesthetic. I day dream about my new SG while I'm at work so I look up videos like this when I have to be away from my guitar during the day :) Thanks for making the video
To me the tribute is a bit too expensive. The price difference is relatively small, compared to the LP versions for example. i like the tribute a lot really. But it should be a bit more affordable.
8.40! Like wow! Wow! That blew me away, totally inspiring! Best demo of this guitar I have ever heard - if I can replicate that sound with this guitar I am buying one tomorrow!
I'm for unbound boards - especially Gibson. A gap can develop between the nib and fret end and it drives me crazy. You play along then "squink" there goes your string into the little crack there. Why Gibson?
I have never heard of that and have never had that happen (I own 32 Gibsons). BUT that makes a TON OF SENSE as potential. If you live in a Hot to Cold Climate (Which moisture varies forcing you to humidify your rooms) then the rosewood would expand and retract. So the Nibs could technically move along with the Rosewoods expansion and retraction. I have never even thought of that and thankfully have never experienced it. That being said I still prefer a bound fretboard with the Nibs as Fret Sprout can be a pain (Fenders can get really bad). But with guitars it’s always good to spend $200-300 on a good humidifier. Cheers -Ryan
Listening with my eyes closed especially when you add drive the tribute has a darker airier quality to it and I'm starting to dig the brown color, looks like it's straight off the acdc high voltage album cover so there's that
Fundamental changes like finish type and species of wood for the neck… yes. Satin Nitro tends to let more resonance through (acoustically) and you lose some of the top end… the tribute series usually used Maple for the neck to offset the loss, as maple adds a snappy feel. Do I have to end my comment here by saying “Innit”? I’m not sure of the social convention… innit. Cheers -Ryan
Lil late chiming in but i bought both . the tribute i bought in 2020 and was shoved out Gibson doors without actually any fret end finishing (bad times in transition) but had it professionaly done , GREAT GUITAR NOW ! Had an ebony standard and decided to sell it (REGRET) so i just recently bought the Heritage cherry SG standard . . GREAT GUITARS and EASY on the BACK for us over 50 somethangs
You say you're stupid after clanking the guitars together but, you're actually a very intelligent person!!! Thanks for the VERY comprehensive and detailed review!
You win the award for widest hoodie strings ever. Seriously tho your playing is incredible, extremely well done. How is the neck on the Tribute, is it fat or slimmer?
Armani Hoodies are the shit! Tribute and the Standard have the same Rounded Profile Neck. It its Fat, but not Baseball Neck Fat! Quite comfortable! Cheers -Ryan
Here is the difference: the binding, the "setup" assuming it is done properly by Gibson (cough cough) and the price tag. Everything is exactly the same.
Except you forgot the Neck is Maple on the Tribute vs Mahogany on the Standard, Gloss Nitro on the Standard, Satin on the Tribute, Pickup covers on the Standard vs uncovered on the tribute, inlays, and of course as you mentioned: The Binding. Biggest and most noticeable differences are going to The finish and the neck. Much more resonant (and Dull Sounding) on the Tribute and much more presence on the Standard. That has to do with the finish itself. Cheers -Ryan
@@Crypticmaskguitar Satin or gloss nitro has absolutely nothing to do with the resonance or presence of the guitar. You’re talking about two different pieces of wood.
100% does have an affect on Resonance and Presence. Satin Nitro will have a more resonant tone than Gloss. Play them one after the other and you will feel the difference in your body. Cheers -Ryan
Very similar but the standard just sounds a touch more open and seems to have that little something that the tribute is missing. I want a cherry tribure so bad but these reviews keep pushing me to the standard Edit - full metal has entered the chat and the tribute is noticeably tighter
