Your videos that go in-depth in comparing the US-made vs. their less expensive analogue brethren are so interesting and full of useful information that I love. Please keep up the amazing work, mate!
I agree with everything you say here. I own both the epiphone & gibson les paul 50s standards & whilst I have to admit that the gibson is on another level in terms of quality, I actually enjoy playing the epiphone so much more due to the fact that i get nervous playing the gibson because it is so delicate. All you have to do is look at it & a ding appears. It's been a dream of mine for so long to own a gibson les paul standard, but the reality is that my playing suffers when using it because I'm more concerned with not damaging it. So because of that reason, I've regrettably decided to sell it. I've thrown in a seymour duncan jb & jazz humbucker set into the epiphone & I have to say, it is absolutely stunning in both sound & playability & is a seriously genuine alternative to the gibson.
I to like the top wrap feel on my LPs as well. I tend to play my Epiphone LPs more than my Gibsons. They feel right in all the right places. lol… two of my Epiphone LPs I bought at pawn shops and new they were the ones immediately. They both cost $225. They were bought at different times both made in Korea. I had to have the Gibsons for my own satisfaction of ownership. But I hardly touch them anymore. The Epi’s are my work horses and always will be. Thank you
I take it as a cosmic hint, that you post a video about the 50's Goldtop today and I am about to pull the trigger on one!!! EDIT: I can't leave the comment without saying that this channel has become one of my absolute favourites on RU-vid. Your playing style and choice of material and tone in demonstrating these instruments is remarkable. That tone on the outro is outrageous!!!
@@theguitaristas Indeed! The Goldtop arrived today, perfect in fit, finish and setup. Needed just the slightest adjustment to the D string for tuning, and that was it!
I purchased an Epiphone Les Paul this year and I was quite surprised by its quality! Great solid finish as you mentionned and it is by far the most stable in terms of tuning in my experience. I own a Tele, Godin, Schecter but the Epiphone LesPaul Standard keeps his tune better. Nice sound and thick neck, I love it!
I constantly stare at my guitars, I love hanging them on the wall because it comforts me to see them several times a day. I have a Paul Reed Smith Brushmaster with a 10 top that is absolutely stunning! I have a Gibson Les Paul in a Tobacco Burst that is beautiful too. I just enjoy looking at all of my guitars, still can’t believe I have them.
Re; the wiring on these two... I did get it arse about face in the film and as a matter of fact it's the Epiphone that has the proper 50's wiring and not the Gibson. I also remembered I can just check the end to see how many pieces of wood! Thanks to those that pointed out the error of my ways! Cheers.
The way to stop stand rash is to heat the rubber parts to drive off the volatile compounds that react with the nitro. I also have a method for perfect Gibson tuning stability on my channel.
Are you tempted to test out one of the new Epiphone "Lazarus" Joe bonamassa Les pauls. Seem simoarly spec'd to the 59 custom shop limted epiphone run, the top looks superb.
@@theguitaristas Yeah your right if I was in your position and already owned the 59 I'd be happy. I've seen complaints about some looking rather less flamed than others and also mismatched tops/veneer, I imagine the sound would be very similar to the 59. I guess it's just an alternative finish option to those who haven't got the 59 or Joe fans.
I just returned my Gibson and am waiting on my 50s gold top. I have had several epiphones and liked them all. Thank you so much for the information, I also subscribed...
I got a Epiphone SG Modern Red. I can say it is as good as the Gibson Blueberry Fade I have and it has a phenomenal sustain. It feels more solid and quite hard to believe for $600 dollars thanks for your vids👍👍
I’m a bit late to this but I thought I’d add this incase anyone is wondering. The marks appearing on the Gibson is mostly referred to as Milking I believe, it’s what we used to call it anyway. It is very common in that area under your arm when you play. Mine did the same when it was new and eventually came out by itself. Personally I kinda like it but there is a specific polish you can get for it, pmt sell it. I would say it will fetch out the mark on the back from the stand too. Thanks.
I have an Epiphone Standard '50s and a 2017 Gibson Traditional T - the model that got rebranded as the Standard '50s. Love them both, but there's very, very little difference between them in sound or playability. In a blind test, I'd probably pick either of them about 50% of the time. The Epi is a LOT of bang for the buck and a truly great guitar.
As I'm watching this the video is 2 years old, but it still feels absolutely relevant. Thank you for a real and entertaining comparison. Great job Sir, keep up the good work. Love your channel!
Cheers Jason, yes agreed the Epi does seem to sound a bit fatter - instinctively I put that down to the more 'robust' tailpiece... that may be complete nonsense though so I may have to test that theory at some point! :)
I’ve usually always found that Epi’s tend to have less highs. Some say muddy, some say warm. There’s a lot of things that can contribute. Different fret wire, different bridge saddle materials. And such.
Great in depth dive as usual! I’m considering an epi 50s and was interested to see just how it stacks up against the real thing. I was surprised about the neck cavity difference and also the weight of the two tailpieces. Thanks for all the great info!
I used to own a Gibson Les Paul. I hated that nitro finish due to many of the reasons you mentioned. I now own an Epiphone Les Paul. I did change out the pickups and electronics, but I was very happy with the way it came.
Colin. Always enjoy your video reviews. They are the most honest and pragmatic on RU-vid. I have an Epi 59 and truly love it, although it has made me think that I might really like to own a Gibson standard 50s. Now I'm not so sure as I would be paranoid about damaging the finish. I like my guitars to be perfect rather than roadworn. Definite food for thought.
Great review (as usually I would say !), thank you for the way you let us free to make our proper opinion ... you have a real objective point of view and your explanations are very clear . Best regards from France ! You make my english comprehension improving a lot as much as I listen to your sweet british pronunciation, you've got a sort of Eric Clapton's sound voice ! I hope my english is not too bad to be understood !
I really enjoyed this video, well done. I've been on the fence for awhile now about buying my first Les Paul. This really helped me on my decision so kudos to you on such awesome content. Please keep making videos ;))
That Gold Top!!!! It has a real Neil Young Cowgirl in the Sand kind of vibe to it. The Gibson sounds a bit clearer, and like it has a bit more headroom. I suspect that is mostly down to the pickups. If you put Seymour Duncan 58’s in the Epiphone, you would have a total rock machine. Great playing as well. I’d love to jam out sometime.
Your two penny words how you said, weight a lot in my ears! You have said with this video everything, whats important to hear. To sad that not all of us understand and learn from your expirience even after this well done video. It can see you have some life experience and the facts about something are more important. I wish you a great Year 2024👍
I got my start gigging with several Epiphone Les Pauls. Brilliant guitars, I’ll never bash them. I graduated to a proper Gibson LP before my first theater show in 2008. I could tell the difference in feel and playability right away. I’m curious to know how close the newer Epi’s are to the bigger brothers, I haven’t played one since they’ve come out.
Cheers Anthony, you should give these new ones a try I think you'd be surprised at how good they are... I don't think I could feel the difference in a blind test.
My Epi goldtop like yours, rings like a bell acoustically or plugged in and the body really resonates very well and even when you pluck a single string. It's not a Gibson but it's still good regardless. At any live gig it sounds good and people in the audience don't know or care what brand it is as long as you play good and sound good and if you play loud rock and roll or punk then it's royal!!😊
I just bought a Epi Standard Goldtop just like the one in this video. Something about the neck...I absolutely love the shape of it. I've had Gibby Custom Shops, super-rare replicas from overseas, and this neck shape is the bee's knees. I'm going to put a bunch of Faber hardware on it and swap the pickups more for an aged look than anything else. I will also say that the goldtop color is way better than the old gold sparkle flaky crap Epi used to spray not that long ago. The fit and finish on my Epi are pretty good, maybe 8/10. You have to pay a lot more to get a quality increase that actually matters. Thanks for this great video!
I’m sure I could be very happy with the Epiphone, but damn that Standard is a fine looking guitar. And I have to say I’m not sure I could tell a difference in a blind test.
I think the real biggest difference is how the Gibson makes you feel owning it… I often wish I could get that Gibson feeling out of my life it would save me a fortune! 😂👍
Just bought an Epiphone 60s LP, £540 and I came to this review 2 years after you posted it, but its great. A very honest look at both guitars, thank you. Im very happy with the Epi, it has the necessary sound.
Dings gives it Character. Great analysis. Thank you. I have the Epiphone 50s LP 2021 and the Epiphone 335 Traditional Pro 335. They are set so well and flawless out of box. Restrung. Resonate beautifully. Hold tune well. I am so glad Epiphone has upped their game.
The Epi 50s have the Probucker 1&2 pickups, a galaxy ahead of the 2&3 set imo. Just swapped in alnico 4 magnets in a 2&3 set, have another set waiting for alnico 3's, to see if they'll lift out of that mush they can collapse into with drive and overdrive, and perhaps also pull back some of those forward low and high frequencies they've got just a bit. I really like the phase-y Burstbucker thing they've got, just not the smear. Fingers crossed!
Awesome job!!!! I was just hours away from buying my GIBSON. Putting the Brakes on now as the Epiphone may be a better real world choice for me. Thanks so very much and ROCK ON!!
Cheers Thomas! Got to ask yourself seriously what it is you want from it… if it’s a ‘trophy’ guitar then get the Gibson, but if you want a player that will do everything pretty much as well and save you $2k+ you know the answer! 😎👍
Very troubling that the Gibson 50's Les Paul doesn't have the long tenon! Also Colin, that lead line around 41:00 sounded absolutely *wonderful*! The issues you mention at the end about the fragility of Gibson's is actually food for thought, particularly as someone who has been considering finally buying one!
Thanks that’s appreciated! 😎👍 I’m sure it won’t break but if you are fussy about marks and dings it’s a lot more fragile so you need to take much better care than I do! 😆
I own a 60's epiphone and love it. A quick adjustment of the pickups including their poll pieces will yelled pleasing results. Love your reviews!! I have never seen a channel go into such detail and have such a competent host. Please keep it up.
Excellent video. Unfortunately I once bought an epiphone. A red "dot". It was not cheap and it was not very good. You live and learn. So it will only be a Gibson for me, but each to his/her own!!
Cheers man, I will say that I also had a dot which I sold not long before I got the latest 335, and the new 'inspired by' range is a real cut above so don't count them out!
@@theguitaristas thank you for the advise. I love the look f Of your black sg custom by epiphone..... A few people have said that the inspired by series are great. So I will have to try them out.... take care!!
Wildwood guitars did the same for me and took my Gibson Les Paul modern off there website to hold for me after a dropped my first Gibson Les Paul modern and broke the neck so I wanted another right away. 🤘🤘🤘💯💯💯❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great point of view, as someone who has owned an Epi Les Paul custom & an Epi SG and now own a Gibson sg its hard to put in words the difference but there is one. Ive never felt regret when i sold my Epis but the sheer thought of losing my Gibson gives me near heart attack. Going back to the finish even on your acoustic test the epi almost sounds plasticy an I had the same with my Epis but the Gibson sounds bright to my ear which is the difference I hear on mine. Not sure if that is wood or coating (nitro finish apparently helps the wood bresth more) certainly sounds like that to me on your test and my own guitar.
Do you know the channel Driftwood Guitars? He's a luthier who's kind of a snobby nihilist that's too cool for school and likes to criticize and cynically call out the quality of big manufacturers. But even he says that nitrocellulose is unequivocally the best finish for acoustic guitars.
Great video thank you, very insightful, loved your playing also . I think I’d have the Gibson even at the extra cost, the soft finish doesn’t really concern me as I would rather have a chipped and scuffed played guitar than a unplayed prestige one, just my opinion. Great video thanks 🙏
Great video on the comparison. If I don’t get my old early 2000s Les Paul Special back from my friend, who I sold it too, I would seriously think of getting the Epiphone, and modded it with a humbucker sized P90 style pickup.
1st Lester was an Epi for $329 and I rocked that beauty for 3 1/2 years before I got my 1st Gibson. A 1961 es 335 with the original bridge pu. It was love at first sight. Hurray for the “inspired by” series. It’s about time Gibson stepped it up. Thanks for the vids.
I thoroughly enjoyed that, was a treat to just sit there and watch you break it down in a way that is informative, exciting and relaxing at the same time. Well done. I've got a Gibson Tribute with P90's, and love it. I've also got an Epiphone Standard which I also cherish, but for giggles I've swapped out the pup's to BB1&2's. Its good fun to compare and contrast. Maybe an idea for a video?! anyway, thanks again, until next time take care.
Cheers Scratch, thanks for the support it's appreciated! As a matter of fact I've got some spare burstbuckers we took out our Epiphone 59... and have a vs Probuckers video on the planner! 😀👍🎸
@@theguitaristas Ok so I've just top wrapped my 50's Epiphone Standard. I must say, I'm enjoying it and I can't say for certain that its not because of the new strings, but its got more chime and sustain. Either way, it also looks pretty cool at the very least, thanks for the suggestion!
The first blemish just means it's now officially yours, thats how I look at it anyway. Couldn't help but laugh when you brought up the smell, that's definetly a thing across the line for the most part. I own a few Gibsons, a few epiphones and some other brands like Charvel,LTD,Fender,Squier, blah blah way too many, I just love guitars. That being said, There's definetly something about a Gibson, anytime I've gotten one I tend to forget about how much I paid for them because they're just something a lot different and like you said and I completely agree with, you just feel it in your heart and in your head. Thanks for doing this! Made me remember what it was like to see my favorite Gibson for the first time.
Cheers Jeremy! Isn't it crazy that however much we love all our many other brand guitars, that call of the Gibson remains so strong!... I reckon they must put some kind of hypno drug in the nitro that gives off that smell :) Damn you Gibson why are you so alluring!
I will never get why people obsess over the long neck tenon thing. There's virtually zero chance of it having any effect on the sound of the plugged in guitar. Actually (if it's properly hardend) the rocker joint with more glue should be better. The thing is, contrary to conventional wisdom, you really don't want a guitar that's really good at transfering vibrations through the body. That actually means that the vibrations from the strings are disappering into the body. For the very same reason an electric guitar that's resonates really well and is really loud acoustically should sound weaker when plugged into an amp.
Another thing, nobody will care I'm sure, Mr. Les Paul himself did a lot of his work and tinkering on his own guitars at the Epiphone factory, which was in New York USA I believe at the time. Knowing this, in my mind, I feel the Epiphone is an even better suited guitar to have Les Paul's name on the headstock. After all, Les Paul guitar is one of the most unrecognized signature guitars simply because most people don't know Les Paul was an actual person. I'm waffling on... Thanks for the video!
You can buff it out. Start with 800 grit wet/dry and work up to 2K, 3K, 4k and it’ll look like new. I’ve had to do it on by 2009 several times because like a fool, I wear a logo t-shirt when playing it, which screws up the finish. I never learn!
I honestly think it's too soft for that.... although I expect you could do it, I reckon it would end up looking like my scratched up Les Paul Junior if I tried! Cheers man :)
@@theguitaristas You could try it in a small area on your Les Paul Junior. I believe I finished it off with 12,000 grit rather than 8000 but, it does work. I found out from a guy at Stew-Mac. But, if it seems too challenging, I don’t blame you. I definitely get it;)
Love Your comparisons!! Very helpful, Honest assessments that help show differences in these guitars, and helpful to players in the market for a guitar!! Thanks Very Much for Your Honest in depth looks at these instruments!!!
Colin, Thanks for the reply!! Because of Your in depth look at the Epiphone 61 SG/Les Paul I purchased got one from Sweetwater and am not disappointed with it's performance!! I normally use Satriana pickups but wanted to try the Gibson Burstbuckers and am getting used to their sound. I have owned a number of SG's and this one plays as good as any, and sounds better than the others. For true 3 pickup SG/Les Paul lovers, the new SG Custom could be fitted with the middle pickup, all Burstbuckers, trem system and You would have the SG/Les Paul Custom without many other changes!!! The ebony color is beautiful with the Gold hardware!! I have had 3 of the Epiphone version of this and Loved the addition of that middle pickup in Jazz and Pink Floyd type pieces!! It can also add a Strat sound to Rock and other styles as well!! Cheers!!! Have a Great week!!! Thanks again for the Great reviews not crowded with riffs and distortion!!!
I just watched the Les Paul junior video with the scratching I thought you stated that would be the last new Gibson you'd buy and here you are a few months later with an LP standard :-)
Gibson fix the tuning issues. Premium price but not getting premium quality." Colour on the Gibson is AMAZING & so is the sound, the Epi also sounds Amazing! Sorry for the ding, now it's getting relicked.
I saw on Phil McKnight's channel a question, which seems relevant - are Gibson LP's for collecting, and Epiphone LP's for playing (given the ever-decreasing difference in quality)? I would hate to think people just buy guitars for wall decoration, but why would you pay for a Gibson if they have a softer, more fragile finish?
I saw that... love Phil's channel and he actually knows what he's talking about! 😂👍 I think that's a really good way to sum up what I am slowly discovering and coming to terms with.
Nice video! My left handed Heritage Cherry Burst Epiphone Les Paul Standard 50's just arrived earlier today, and honestly, I really love it. It plays, sounds, feels like my actual 2012 Gibson Les paul Jr (Cherry stain red) but looks much nicer. It looks a lot like the Gibson in this video as a matter of fact. I'm very happy with it, and sings through my marshall amp beautifully. For around $730 USD after taxes, not a bad buy when compared to the more expensive $2000.00+ Gibsons.
Cheers Chris... absolute no brainer 👍 or even get a tidy tube amp for that extra £1k saved? Gibson is fine but an entire gig rig with backup guitar? who in their right mind wouldn’t choose that 🤷♂️👍🎸
Nice colour choices! - I just got an Ebony Epi 60s Standard in and it's fabulous... neck way nicer than I'd expected (not too thin).... something coming up on that soon.
Honduran mahogany is the gold tone standard by which all mahogany is judged.. This mahogany is used for Gibson Les Pauls..Due to restrictions Honduran mahogany can only be used from trees that have already fallen. The "replacement" for Honduran mahogany is West African mahogany, which is what some high end guitar makers use. Its been criticized-- -because it is NOT Honduran mahogany ( my opinion guitar players have bought into the argument that only the Honduran varieties can produce that "magical" tone). I have guitars made with West African mahogany and they sound great. The Honduras climate of high heat and high humidity is a factor into the tone, yet its hot and humid in West Africa so that argument is nonsense when comparing the two. The lightest mahogany sounds the best be it Honduran or West African. Great comparison video. 🎸👍
Another great video. I’m going to start saving for the Epiphone. Your videos have convinced me that maybe for us mere mortal guitar players the Epiphones are a good stepping stone towards guitarista mastery. Would be interested in a review of the Epiphone DC Pro.
Wow awesome review of Gibson and Epiphone. There was quite a lot I didn’t know! I was looking at a Gibson Les Paul Cherry Sunburst without scratch guard….. might check out the epiphone equivalent now! Your playing suits the the Les Paul …. Very reminiscent of Joe Walsh before joined the Eagles! Keep up the videos. Thanks! 👍👍👍
I am by no means a professional guitarist but in my limited experience, Gibson has way more mystique and I think that affects opinions. Epiphone makes very good quality guitars as does Gibson. For me, the differences do not justify the price discrepancy. However, regarding value, one would have to include the resale value and obviously, that would entirely in Gibson's favor. However, if you buy a guitar to play it or to collect or resell them is what decides the value to you. What it may be worth in resale only matters if you intend to sell it.
Ello ello ello, I enjoy your content and your playing. I’m thinking heavily about getting an epiphone les paul and you may have just talked me into it. Keep it up. Thank you, peace.
Hello again, great detailed video again! I own a new Les Paul as well I just recently purchased ( Mine is a 60’s with the more slim neck, amongst a few other differences ). You blew me away when you removed the neck pickup on that Epi though…. I can’t believe they’re doing long neck tenons and yet on a Standard they aren’t 😣. I’ve been a Gibson fan my entire life, I do think it’s outrageous that you need to head into the five thousand dollar price bracket ( Or More even ) and go custom shop to have this neck pocket while they’re doing them on Epi’s….. This is really irking me. Thanks again and I look forward to your feeds :)
Cheers Thomas, I know it’s crazy eh?… and I think you could tell by my reaction I was also surprised! Sorry it if ruined your day man but as you know owning a Gibson can be an emotional rollercoaster! 😆👍
I'm sorry that you dinged your Gibson, that hurts, but you can't blame the finish for that. I'm not picking on the Epi when I say this but with that hard poly finish it would have probably chipped out. Those cracks in the finish at the nut and loose nut on the Epi, I would bet that happened during one of those truss rod adjustments. It's happened to me. Every new Epi I've owned, except for the Crestwood Custom, needed truss rod adjustments regularly for a year or two. Then they would settle in. I don't know why. The Crestwood, I made one slight adjustment after it warmed up from winter delivery and never touched it again. That was the nicest Epi I've owned but I couldn't deal with the trem system so, it's gone. I'll admit, I'm feeling a little out of place. I'm not here to rain on the parade but, I'm still a Gibson fan. But in the end I think it's kind of like an old biker friend once told me when the hardcore Harley boys didn't like me showing up at the shop on my old KZ, it doesn't matter what you ride, it only matters that you ride. So, play on. I'll keep my comments on this subject in check...
Cheers Tony, that’s all cool and your comment and opinion is as valid as mine! I’m a big Gibson fan anyway and across this channel there are a few of this type of film. I try to put it all into context… it’s the price difference that I kick back on really and that we should expect perfection for such large investments. PS I ride made in Japan, Italy, and India but think a Harley may be on the Horizon! 😎👍👍
I play a gibson les paul deluxe gold top 1973. Its a work horse and beat up but still sounds and plays great. I also own a les paul standard ephiphone about 2010.. The problem is these chinese guitars are not consistant in neck wood density. If the neck is too stiff you can not set the truss rod to give you a slight dip in the neck on the high e. My set ups are low but no fret buzz. I fixed mine with a radical approach involving infra red heat. It now plays great and sounds great. So if buying a ephiphone ,check for neck dip. Tam
Cheers Tam, but your talking about a 2010 Epiphone's and I'd agree about that... but today's range are a whole different ball game my friend and you really need to try one to believe it. Your 73' deluxe is a dream guitar... congratulations on that one!
I have always been a fender guy. I have bought a Epi LP pro 2 and I love it. I have been of course thinking man "I gotta get a real one". I have always been like wow I can get the most hoped up Strat for 2k or a regular LP for 2k? Why whats the reason? Now I know that one day maybe get a real Gibson but I am content with getting a few Epi's. For sure that is the right move. Although I hate to buy from China I have a hard time paying for my politics lol. I enjoy your videos quite a bit. Good information and GREAT playing. Thanks!
So i bought a 2021 classic 3 weeks ago. I went into my local Guitar Center a few days ago, right after the Gibson price hike, and found that a heritage cherry with a lovely flame top was on sale for 2000. I ran straight home and grabbed the classic and exchanged it for the standard (no brainer). When i got it home i popped off the rusted strings and started cleaning the fret board then put some "lemon" oil on the board. I nearly had a cow when i saw the binding and fret board at the low E side at the 15, 16 and 17th fret. There where rough file marks that are driving me nuts. I will live with them because i saved 500 bucks. Should i take it back? Love your channel. I'm a new subscriber. CHEERS from the US!!
Cheers Richard, definitely sounds like a pretty good deal... and would you believe rough file marks are in fact normal where they file off the binding by hand... some people even like it as it proves the guitar was 'hand made'. It's just another one of those things that Gibson get away with and probably why so many people complain about poor QC... Glad you find us man and thanks for the sub!!
It seems like if you can afford it, you need both an Epiphone and a Gibson. The Epiphone is the every day beat em up guitar that you can even let the grand kids play with and the Gibson for moments of quiet or loud contemplation that you might occasionally take out to let the grand kids admire. I would be unhappy if i scratched/chipped a Gibson but it seems the Epiphone can withstand the rough and tumble.
For me now is this question as to whether I go 50’s Epi, 59 Epi, or Gibson Tribute range. I’m just not sure I could go past a 1500.00 Gibson standard if that far in US dollars. The Gibson Tribute I like best because of the satin finish’s and price point but wonder about the possibility of QC issues at that 1100.00 price point...great work, as always Colin you are the best in my book!
Cheers Steve, thanks for support man!.... tough choices! I think the tributes are good but still such a premium over Epiphone's you have too think hard about it, and I would suggest something like the Epiphone 59 has may superior parts over a tribute? 🤔
thank you very much for your video. I would also like to see the best epiphone. for example Epihone Custom pro or Epihone prophecy. Thank you very much friend for your videos. even though I don't understand the language. But I listen to the sound of guitars. And I listen to your solos. I like very much.
Funny you mentioned about how fragile the Gibson is. I've wanted one my whole life, finally got one, dinged mine within the first couple days. I was devistated. Starting to get over it but it's been 5 years and I'm still incredibly anal about how I play it. I know it'll age over time but given how much it cost me, it's always upset me that the most expensive guitar I own will be the one that ages and looks shit (IMO) the fastest. That said, just like losing your v-card, until you've done it you don't realise that it's not the be-all and end-all. Gibson was my dream guitar and now I own one I couldn't care less about getting an expensive guitar; in fact, I'd sooner have a cheaper one that I don't fear playing!
Great video, thanks, I really enjoyed watching it...I have both a 2020 Gibson Les Paul 60s in Unburst and a 2020 Epi Les Paul Custom in Alpine White. I think both are amazing guitars. My only criticism is the 9lb 15oz weight of the Gibson. I bought it on 12 month payment plan otherwise I couldn't afford it and it looked way better than the other three offered, and I had to jump on it not knowing if others would be available. The flame maple is almost AAA and consistent. The mahogany is one piece. One way to determine if its more than one piece is to look at the bottom near the strap button. The ebony fret board is beautiful on the Epi and seems to feel different than the rosewood. The pickups on the Gibson have slightly more refined tone as well as slightly higher out put. I try and wear long sleeve button less shirts playing the Gibson. Thanks again...
Thanks for this, and there it is again - the compromises you may have to make with the Gibson... is it really worth the back support and protective clothing needed to play authentic? 😂👍🎸
Regarding nitro: Gibson uses different formulations of nitro for Custom Shop vs Standard range. I have reclaimed vinyl straps I've used for years on my LP Standard- no finish marks, no interaction. I bought my bucket-list 335 (made in Memphis, which was considered 'custom shop' at the time) and the same exact straps melted through the nitro near both strap buttons. I was horrified. I only use straps with real leather ends and Hercules stands and hangers now: no issues with the 335 top coat. (Hopefully, this helps someone!)
Cheers man, that's another horror story I bet you were gutted! These guitars should at least come with a warning... anyone that reads this take note! 👍
Nice video, great in all details comparison. No question the Epi has a lot of value without braking the bank too much, but, having said that, would I buy a Ferrari made in China or S. Korea or even a kit? No I would not, I'd save my money and get a Gibson. I have a bunch bought over many years and they all appreciated in value, would a Chinese Epi do that? I don't think so. Finally, here in the USA a major music store chain has 0% financing up to 48 months for purchases over $499.00. Quite possible for most folks to afford an expensive guitar.
i know am all and will always be All about the ultimate Gibson Guitars such BLACK BEAUTY Les paul Custom & BLACK SG but man i played an Epiphone SG the other day that made me have a better level of appreciation for the Epis only thing that always bugged me about the Epiphone designs would the headstock i just think the Gibson's headstock looks so much nicer and authentic but that is just my lil nickpick about it with all that nonsense said, i also thing my Black Double cut Les paul is been highly underrated as well love that girl
I have been desiring a tremolo in my older age. Was never into the whammy bar thing in the 90's. I don;t want a strat. I live the jazz master but that trem system takes quite a bit of work. I may buy an epiphone., I'll pay up i think for the burstbucker upgrade. Then I'll put a dudenberg les trem 2 and a rollr bridge on it. tank you sir.
Oh by the way I forgot to mention that I would be severely pissed off if any of my Les Pauls marked up so easily. And I do own Nitro finished ones! Cheers. 😊😎🎸
