These 409/409 bel air bubble tops were the NHRA super stock drag race champs in the 1962 season. I used to see the National Champ, Dave Strickler's Old Reliable, which was built and tuned by Bill Jenkins, run at Atco Raceway, my local track, which was close to Jenkins' hometown of Malvern Pa. The A/stock national champ, a 409/380hp Jenkins built bubble top called Northwind also ran there regularly, and the 3rd championship bubble top, a 1961 409/360 B/stock Bel Air called Thumper appeared regularly. If you remember these cars there was nothing like the spectacle of watching them run. They would come to the line and the driver would rev to 6000rpm, the redline, and then sidestep the clutch right before the green and power shift shift through the gears with the foot on the floor. The 426 Hemis with torqueflite automatic came in 1964 and were quicker and faster than the 409 bel airs, but the big 409's put on a better show when they were competitive. Sorry to be so long, but I'll never forget what I saw when I was 12 years old. Good review!

thats why the car you drove had no lighter, no radio, little hubcaps, no clock, and probably no heater....it was a factory race car.

Slight correction. The 300 HP 327’s did not have dual 4 bbl carbs. Also, the factory shifters and linkage were pretty sloppy. Most were replaced early in the game with Hurst shifters. Much tighter and better.

@@What.its.like. - 4 banger only available in little Chevy II... 6 was smallest engine in full size Chevy and later Chevelle... 4 banger came back in Camaro in like 1980's... Dual quad 327 was 340 HP as I recall and maybe only available in one year of 1962... maybe only in Corvette?... Engine pictured has aluminum intake manifold whereas stock 340 HP prolly had painted cast iron intake... Corvette also had 360 HP 327" engine option... 409 never offered in Corvette...

2x4s were offered by Edelbrock or Offenhauser for 327s. I put 3x2s on my '67 283. Just a little overcarbureted. Many Corvette 265s and 283s came with 2x4s, thanks to Zora Arkus Duntov. And nothing beats the 30 30 solid cam in the 340hp, which was 360hp with Roshester Fuel Injection. A solid cam was never offered in a full size Chevy small block, but many 409s had solids, and L72 427 425 had solids in '66 and '68 & '69. No L72 in '67. I hope I got my years correct!

I love these "bubble tops" The flat tops were nice too. I just loved mid 50's-60's Chevrolet's. Mom had a '67 SS + a "lead foot''Ol "Smokey" pulled her over for speeding with my sister as a small child. My mom told the cop that it was my dads car and she wasn't used to such a high powered motor. When he also saw sister sleeping in back seat in the car he warned her "You gotta keep that speed under CONTROL young lady!" and let her go. LOL! Dad "loved retelling" that story of how mom got out of that speeding ticket.

This is an amazingly clean and tight restoration of a 62 Chevy Bel Air bubbletop. I learned to drive in a 62 Bel Air four door (283 Powerglide, did not sound or drive like this one), and my best friend had another 62 Bel Air in the same body style, neither of those cars had this build quality. But those nylon and vinyl interiors were very, very durable, we gave them a good test. That knob underneath the ignition operates the right side kick panel vent, a nice feature in that the driver could open both panels on a warm day without having to reach over. Chevrolet advertised a "Jet Smooth Ride" on these vehicles. They had very soft springing and minimal shock valving and were very floaty at speed, leaned over embarrassingly on a turn unless you got the heavy duty suspension. With that big steering wheel and the very slow steering rate, over 50 miles/hour you just kind of guessed at what your wheels were doing, hopefully still pointing you in the right direction. Thanks for the ride!

Thank you so much for sharing those memories I drove a Lincoln mark five yesterday and remembering back to the 409 bel air I think the Chevy is more floaty than the mark V was it’s crazy it’s not bad at slow speeds but get on the free way get it going 60/65 and it become apparent the guys that raced those cars they were real race car drivers. Just like you said it gets hard to tell where the front wheels are and floating.. also that car is super important to history so that’s in the back of my mind when driving it. Glad you enjoyed this episode =)

And honestly it’s not that aggressive it sounds more aggressive than it actually is.. In 1972 I worked with a guy that had a ‘60 Chevy 2 door sedan. Dull medium blue paint, hub caps, didn’t look special at all. It had a 409 and 4 speed. I got to ride in it once and he wanted to show it off a bit. Man that thing had a ton of torque. From a dead stop it shoved me back in the seat.

My dad had the '62 Bel-Air coupe regular hardtop 289 two barrel carb automatic transmission version. White exterior with blue interior. The ignition switch was designed to use it without the key but for anti theft measures it could be turned one more click to lock it. Us kids helped him overhaul the engine with I myself using a spoon and butter knife to scrape caked up oil(Quaker State) out of the litter valley that was layered up over a half inch thick. After dad bought a '67 Impala 327 station(my favorite) wagon to replace it (growing family) with the Bel-Air sitting up on blocks for several years until it was sold off.

I mentioned in another comment that the 4 cylinder engine was a Chevy II engine, not available in the full sized car. However the 6 cylinder was standard. I noticed that with the 327 V8 that there was a picture of a dual quad engine and you said the 300 hp 327 was a dual quad engine. It was not. It had a single 4 bbl as carburation. I don't know if you could order a dual quad 327 in a Corvette though but it would have been more than 300 hp. The 409 is my favorite engine. It just looked fantastic especially beginning in 1963 when they went with chrome valve covers and air cleaner and a dip stick with a stamping of SS 409. I had a '63 Impala Super Sport with a 340 hp 409. Much easier to deal with than the 400 or 425 hp engines and had plenty of zip. The shot in the video when you are about to push the car shows a stunning silhouette of the bubble top. A wonderful roof design and I think the full dress 1961 Impala 2 door hardtop was the best of all the years with the bubbletop but '62 Bel Airs sure made them look great. Too bad they didn't offer both roof designs on the Impala for 1962. Too bad the carb linkage was a little goofy so you didn't get to use the 409 flat out without the fear of a stuck throttle. That engine just had the best look and sound for me. Road and drove several as well as the mentioned ownership. Too bad life happens and things go away. Thanks for the memories.

The last full size chevy to have a dual quad small block option was a 1957 283-245hp and 283-270hp engine . In 1969 you could special order a cross ram dual quad set up for small block 302 Z/28 , which you could bolt onto a small block of your choosing .

Enjoyable video Jay you do a GREAT job with these. As one of the (often detested, rightly so) Baby-Boomer generation, I have always felt that the high point of American Manufacturing was the full size sedans and station wagons from 1960 - 1975. Everyone loves pony cars and Corvettes, and 1955 - 1957 Chevy's and Ford Crown Vics were rolling jewelry. However the full size sedans from the 1960 - 1975 era were comfortable, economical, reliable, stylish and were superbly suited to driving on an American freeway at 75 mph. If you drive a 1962 Bel-Air with the 283 V8 today, you will find it superbly comfortable, peppy, economical and it's performance is surprisingly modern. Sure, a 2022 SUV or Sedan posts far superior numbers for performance and economy and have technology that couldn't be imagined in 1962. However when you consider how primitive the technology was back in the day, these cars were astounding. After 1975, American manufacturers had to play catch-up with the imports on emissions and fuel economy. To this day they haven't completely recovered, IMO.

Excellent video! Thank you! A few years back, when we were in Las Vegas and the Imperial Palace Casino/Hotel was still around , it had the famous Imperial Palace Car Collection. There were some really stand-out cars around, from Howard Hughes' 1953 Chrysler Imperial with air conditioning(a wooden box that took up the entire trunk, which you put block ice in with a fan that blew over it), Johnny Carson's father's car(which Jay Leno now has), to a 1962 Chevy Biscayne 2-door post with the 409 and 4-speed. A lot of times these big-engined cars were the most basic car model you could buy. Like the next step up car you are showing, these cars are rarer than hen's teeth. Impressive! I have never seen a full size Chevy with a 4 cylinder. They were even rare in the Chevy II, with most having 6 cylinders. Oh, I don't think that the tach is working right, it seemed to be pinned and the engine did sound like it was revving that high at cruise. 409's don't seem to rev very well. Maybe that is the purpose of the wide-ratio 4-speed. Maybe someone has the tach set to 4 cylinders?

@@What.its.like. Oh right. A Prius. Get in line trying to buy one new or old. Many of the used ones go into taxi service and are snapped up as soon as they are listed. It's best to get the newest you can afford. We traded in our 2012 Gen III Prius and of the 5 levels that year it was a 3. Our 2022 Prius is a Prime(plug-in) Limited. I believe that it may be the top of the line. Now, our 2012 Gen III. The hybrid battery went bad last December, but it was under warranty. I'm not sure but that generation of Prius a new genuine Toyota hybrid battery may be around $6K. I had replaced a battery in a customer's Gen II with a Dorman rebuilt and it was about $1500. back in 2017. I wasn't real happy with it but my customer couldn't afford more. Last February, the underhood electronic brake unit went out. It was on backorder and it took about 3 weeks to get it, but they loaned us a 2022 Prius Plug-in. It was under warranty and was told that the unit would cost about $3500. for the part. Out of warranty, a Prius can be a very expensive car. With the Gen II Prius, one thing that they have is what amounts to a thermos under the hood, which stores hot coolant so that you can have heat in the heater right away. The Gen III eliminated that and instead would start the engine within 30 seconds, run the coolant through the catalytic converter and send it to the heater. We never had a problem with heat. A Prius catalytic converter is a frequent item to be stolen, even more than any other car. I spoke with a guy who had his stolen twice this year. The current Prius uses a true climate control and the electric compressor functions as an air conditioner or a heatpump. Then you have the transaxles. They are called CVT's but they are not. They never change gear ratios like other ones in Hondas, Nissans and Subarus do. They have 2 motors in them. MG1 functions as a generator, a starter motor and the reverse gear. There is a single planetary gearset which couples the motors to the final drive. These also have their own liquid cooling system separate from the engines. The radiator is divided into 2 sections, one for each cooling system. The transaxle, motor & inverter cooling system is run by an electric water pump. No, if you don't buy the newest Prius you can, you are asking for trouble. Warranties are important! This is one reason we got a new Prius. The hybrid battery and electronic brake systems were now new, but there are lots more Prius problems to have. Like the electric A/C compressor(I have replaced those on Prius' and they ain't cheap). Then there is the electric rack and pinion steering unit. I had friends in other shops that had replaced some. To do many different operations on a Prius, you have to have a good scanner loaded with the Prius program. The small ones you can buy at Harbor Freight won't do it. I also have an Autel scanner which works well. My Snap-on scanner set me back $15K in 2015. Unless you are a master mechanic and have experience with the Prius, it is better that you pay an experience mechanic to work on it. And..tou better have a good line of credit, because you will be using it!

@@What.its.like. Back in the 1990's my friend and I use to cruise around in my 1972 Oldsmobile with the under-dash mounted tape deck and we listened to all the Van Halen tapes over and over again on a cruise night. I knew that the song was "Beautiful Girls" almost before you even played it. LOL! When I said "Running with the Devil", I wasn't guessing the song in this video. I typed it because Van Halen used 4 car horns to make that initial sound at the beginning of that song. The sound was then looped through a synthesizer or some other recording device and then re-recorded for the album. I saw that on a Professor Of Rock RU-vid video. As for who was the better VH singer...i like both DLR and SH, but for different reasons and moods that I am in at the time. If i feel like rockin' out, it"s DLR for sure...when I want some inspiration, it's SH, especially when SH sings "Mine, All Mine" and "Why Can't This be Love?". I don't know that DRL could pull those songs off. I lived through those times of the 1980's and VH with DLR was playing when I was in elementary school. VH with SH was more like in my High School years, so VH musically can be linked with my pre-20's years...so SH is basically singing the songs that would be linked with Teenage Love and that sort of maturity and questioning a teenage boy would have had at that time. So like i said, i love both, it's just what type of mood i am in these days.

Thank you for the video. I wonder why the 194. 4 CI engine had 7 main bearings, that is the most of all the engine main bearings. That floor high beam switch would often rust out and have to be replaced because of where it was located especially in the northern climates with snow being tracked in the car. I know that happened my parents 62 Impala 4 door sedan. I have to wonder how many unbuckled people had to visit a dentist after a fast stop or accident because of that bare metal painted dash. I would love to have one of these cars, that body style is great, and I wouldn't mind if it had a 283 or 327 engine. I don't have the funds to afford most of my dreams.

Items such as, clock delete, radio delete and cigarette lighter delete could have been OEM "original equipment manufacture" dealer added if the customer opted to do so. The car magazines say that the Pontiac GTO was the first "muscle car" not so true. The Chevrolet 409 came out before the GTO did, but in the mean time, John DeLorean made sure that the GTO would be heavily advertised. By the way the Beach Boys where paid by GM to produce the songs "409" and "Little GTO" I just want to add that the Chevrolet cast iron four cylinder that you see as the base engine is what Chevrolet Motor Division should have been used in the Chevrolet Vega. This might be off the subject but I saw on another website that there was a Tesla Model S electric car that caught fire in Texas I think. It took firefighters 28000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze. For some reason it kept reigniting like a trick candle. They said if it had been a conventional gas powered car it would’ve only taken 300 gallons of water to get the fire out. Another reason to stay away from those electric vehicles.

As a car enthusiast I like Teslas as a point a to point b car and there is nothing faster than electric.. the issue is they like robots don’t have souls.. and are generic and appliance like.. I love the Classic Cars because you are in control not some computer and to drive them you have to know how to drive/correct when it gets away from you lots more going on to drive.. A lot of people don’t get Classic Cars but if you do get it you totally know what I’m talking about it is way more rewarding to drive the older cars to their limit than the fast cars.. now they’re trying to kill sounds good trying to make car super quiet I saw something in California that I guess they can’t get the factory five Shelby’s anymore because they are too loud.

It all depends on what you are in and what you hit and everything else I had a friend die earlier this year they went off the road and hit a tree and they were in a brand new car I have no idea how fast they were going.. I’ve heard other things where people not wearing seatbelts save their lives because if they didn’t eject from the car they would’ve been crushed to death and not wearing a seatbelt actually save their life but I’ve saw other things like if they didn’t have their seatbelt on they get killed. I haven’t seen the math on it but I’m interested to know how many airbags Killed people instead of save lives because there’s always that suffocation factor as well as its punched in the head or wherever with an airbag I mean I’ve never gotten hit with an airbag so I can’t speak from experience but watching it happen in test crashes that’s what it looks like happens.

@Glenn Lego, I understand your preference for ICE engines. The sound of a healthy V8 gets your blood and testosterone going. Regarding the Tesla fires 🔥; it is a chemical reaction fire that is nearly impossible to put out with water 💧. You have to use powder or CO2. There are A, B, C, D & K classifications of fires and fire extinguishers. A chemical fire (lithium) is a Class D. I’ve read many articles about fire departments using tens of thousands of gallons of water 💦 to put out Tesla fires and I am puzzled that fire departments don’t know better. Don’t just take my word for it, look it up. Part of my Engineering career was in a test lab and we had to take training and pass tests every year

They had to pry me out of the car and take me to the hospital. I also sustained a dislocated shoulder, a fractured rib and a punctured lung. The airbags did protect me from the glass windows that shattered, however. The car was a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. Being hit with the airbags was not fun by the way.

Your video is a bit unclear on engines for the Bel Air. the 235 Blue Flame six was the standard engine in 1962. The 4 cylinder and the 195 six were in the Nova. Also, whoever would have bought a 62 Bel Air Bubble Top with the full boogie 409 would not have been interested in anything extra- temp gauge, clock, radio- if it doesn't make it quicker don't bother with it. When the car is still cold the automatic choke would hold the idle up until it warms up. After the car is at normal temp you hit the throttle and the choke would turn off.
