I have very fond memories of this piece. It was played when my wife and I walked down the aisle after being married. I’ll never forget the organists face when I told him I wanted it. I. Had to get the music myself from a music shop in Leeds.

One again I am in awe of Jonathan Scott. He ranks up there with E.Power Biggs, Virgil Fox and Michael Murray as one of the greatest organ virtuosos off all time! Bravo!

Played the organ at Eccles high church, sadly no longer active as a church. It was like being at the controls of a jet fighter, absolutely awesome. I'm a pianist so could only manage the basic bass pedals, so to see such an accomplished organist as Jonathan is an absolute delight. Excellent

I took a gander at the website for eccles church. It seems it is still a fully functioning parish church. The title of the church is St. Mary the Virgin.

This is awesome, such a crisp and grand rendition. Thank you for showing the great ascent to the catbird seat, something organists go through that the public never sees.

Wonderful to hear this magnificent organ , it isn’t played often enough , would love to see this used more for regular recitals and concerts

It isn't played enough - Yes. It has been turned into one of those New Broken collections of pipes. Likely what came before was much better than this thing. Positive organ - what a useless thing. Not even a celeste on any divisions. Borrowed Trumpes on the Great - Henry mus have rolled over in his grave when he heard what was to happen to his organ.

Well I think this organ sounds wonderful & wasn’t around when Henry built the original & I don’t think many are either . However its playable unlike many many more magnificent organs across this region that are either being mothballed or sadly neglected or like many others simply can’t find the funds for the restoration play on . I know not better just like what I hear

Originally a four manual Henry Willis... which was sadly "modernised" in the 1960s by Walkers. Happily David Wells and his team managed to sort out the failing actions and undo some of the more 1960s tonal changes. It's still a bit anaemic. I played it for a graduation ceremony a few years ago (c.2013). It was really shocking then.

Well all I can say is it certainly doesn’t sound shocking now . It sounds marvellous 👍👍

@@shbow1 It's a world away from what it was. far more foundation tone. The reeds are much better, too.

A truly fine performance. As I have previously stated, Mr. Scott, you are a superb artist. E. Power Biggs, Virgil Fox, et. al, will have to move over to 'make room for you at the head of the table'!

The room sounds pretty dead. But for a song like this, you almost need it so the music doesn't become to muddy. Nicely done.

Great performance in a great venue (would it be possible to build a university these days with a structure and organ like this?) But I agree with another comment, the voicing is rather harsh - reeds certainly departing from the traditional English "Willis" sound but probably acceptable for encompassing a wider repertoire, but at least some component(s) of the mixture(s) just don't blend.
@scottmathews3777
@scottmathews3777 6 лет назад
Is it possible that some of the harshness, which I do hear, could be an artifact o the recording process? I noticed the same thing on another of Jonathan Scott's performances of a different piece on a different organ.
@bryangl1
@bryangl1 6 лет назад
Scott. Yes, it is possible the harshness may be, in part, an artifact of the recording - I don't know what challenges the venue may have presented to the engineer (a major factor in many organ recordings). But I have observed harshness of this type in several modern organs (and this is a modern re-build). I'm not sure whether it's a minor fashion, trying to recapture in modern form the brilliance of older builders like Schnitger, or whether, in voicing the mixtures, the tuner is simply unable to accurately hear some of the higher-frequency components. (As for the reeds, a harsher (or would it be fairer to say "more brilliant") tone is more in line with French and Dutch instruments where the results are often excellent but sometimes, for me, too coarse. I don't really have a problem with the reeds in this case.) But as for the mixtures; if a deliberate voicing choice it is one which may please some people, but a choice which, for me, does a disservice to an otherwise magnificent instrument.

It seems to me that what is lacking is resonance, reverberation, which adds vital richness to the sound. Especially so with the 'detatched' playing style Mr Scott used here. Perhaps an additional microphone, at the rear of the hall would have filled in the missing aspect. The "silent stop" I've heard it called.

My personal thoughts: Lovely performance of a great piece. I enjoy the sounds of the trumpets, but the full chorus sounds a bit shrill and wheezy at the same time, so not so pleasant to my ear. Also this recording makes the acoustic sound quite dry. So I would give the player an A+, but the organ a B. In real time, the organ and room might sound quite a bit different. Thank you Jonathan Scott for sharing your wonderful interpretation of one of my favorite works for organ!

@robinharris3425 6 лет назад
You have a point. The organ was remodeled to a 'neo-classical' style in the 1960's, and yes its not quite right, being overburdened with mixture to the 29th . Look up NPOR.!
