He was an amazing musican. But, he was to intelligent for the masses, to critical. Poet, composer, singer, writer, artist and human. His music was like a mirror and became very dark in his last years. But, he was/is a true black hero for me. R.i.p, brother.
The fact that this man was not a star says a lot about how deaf and blind America is now and probably will be until there is a collective awakening. God bless you Gil Scott-Heron.
Look at man, the joy I feel inside. I'm a wee white girl from Northern Ireland, man the Truth is the Truth what a Man!!!!! We have been blessed by him. He didn't pull no punches RESPECT!!!!!!!!!!!!
one of the greatest humans to grace our word, straight from a white Aussie, and yeah when I was around 22 I saw him in Sydney still the coolest best gig i have ever seen Im now late 50s awesome clip. thank you.
man these docu's are just gold, they kept us together as people all around the world, now our culture is slowly disappearing, now it's like we don't know who we are, peace and love from safrica ✊ the struggle continues
Mine too back in 1972 as a 12 year old into Adulthood and Marriage and Parenthood. I am a better Man for my dear wife of 43 years, we still dance to his music.
This man had so much impact in my life.Heard about him from a brother from Connecticut . His Nick Name was Stick. Met him in San Angelo Texas in 1979 . I love you brother and how's my Nephew Jamal ? ,💪🏿💙✊🏿 I pray to God you see this . Thank You and Love you for turning me on to our brother GIL.
I remember his music from my youth, but I never knew his name until today, as I was a toddler back then. Beautiful music which I was able to find through searching the lyrics of the song from the radio. Lovely.
@John Woodsrd I'm on a GSH binge. Just ordered the first minute of a new day on ebay. Used to have the vinyl... A long time ago. The prices on it are wild but after just listening to it again I can see why! Does anyone else make music like that... never again!
If I could define this man into 2 words it would be CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED!!! To this day his material continues to influence America and the music industry
Facts and people don't know it's crazy how no black kids no about gil Scott he should be up there with MLK,Malcom x, Langston Hughes,Micheal Jackson, Micheal Jordan, madam cj walker, Jill Scott,
Just love, love love my brother Gil. We’d cross paths in Harlem and saw him last in front of the Apollo at a Micheal Jackson memorial. Like Christ, Gil’s seed flourishes. Amen🙏🏾
Loved Gil Scott-Heron for many years. B Movie is one of my all time favorite political commentaries, as apropos today as it was in '81 (or sadly, more apropos than ever today). This was a very intelligent man who had a rare clarity of vision & a gift for putting it in to words. Thank-you for posting this video.
I saw him live in 82 I think. Opening for Stevie. I was already into him. But I remember trying to get my friends to listen up.. but they wasn't paying attention. Their loss.
Absolutely, there are no words. I miss Gil so much. He was an amazing Artist and his musical lyrics still resonate today. Gone but never forgotten. Heavenly Peace, Gil.
Nobdy fighting! Because the truth is nobody knows what to say. Gil Scott Heron was and still is the Goat! Without minds like these; we are all doomed. The facts are stranger than fiction to the people who refuse to listen; to the message inside Gil's writtings. He speaks undisputable truth clearly and precisely expressing our experience in this nation/world. I love you Gill! "Rest Easy Brother"
This man was sooo far ahead of his time ..I'm a fan of 70s music and culture..it's like looking at our pre-reawakening.. I'm just catching on to the messages that was in our music back then...like Parliament , Earth Wind & Fire etc
Absolutely Love GIL SCOTT-HERON - Teacher, Poet, Singer, Songwriter, Rapper, Musician & a GENIUS... BLESS.... BIG RESPECT TO GIL SCOTT-HERON...So Very Highly BLESSED to have seen him Live and met several times before he passed..... MISS YOU TOO MUCH BROTHER..... REST IN PARADISE AS YOU WALK & TALK WITH GOD..... One Love, Rajesh Semrete Selassie Aggarwal FRSA
For those who think Gil wasn't a star, I can think of no greater evidence of cultural and social device. Amongst EVERY black person I know over 30 and EVERY awoken person altogether Gil is and has been held in the highest esteem for over 50 years and counting.
@@jerrygunning1449 Yup! I was back home in New York the summer of 1977 from Detroit, his parents lived 3 doors away from a cousin of mine on a called Pedmont on the Westside of Detroit. He and some others was in Central Park giving a concert awe it was awesome man and yes there was plenty of White people there, Latinos, Blacks and all the different nationalities that lived in New York City. Those was the days when life was care free and the nonsense wasn’t needed or wanted. What happened?
I was fortunate enough to meet him in DC when he used to come to the lounge on Rhode Island Ave., and perform and warm up for Shoals and also over the Kenilworth Park and Northeast his music is mine blowing and it was a blessing to meet him on several occasions way before his time a real legend
Thank you so much for uploading this! I saw this as an innocent, relatively sheltered white boy from London in the mid-1980s (it was actually broadcast on UK national TV, late at night). I was about 14 and already getting into jazz and fusion. I didn't really understand the social and black consciousness issues he was dealing with but his music immediately made an impact on me and I knew that there "must be something" there (to quote the title of one of his songs). I'd seen his records in the jazz section of my local second-hand record store but never picked them up. The next day I went and picked one of them up. An absolutely unique genius, stunning artist and poet. F*** racism!
Why can’t the American people find someone as enlightened, intelligent, and open minded as ol’ Gil to represent us? In my opinion, that would be heavenly. He was such a beautiful, well-spoken, loving individual and his art will always be like tasting the sweetest of chocolates….. I apologize for going instant-political but with the growing numbers of ignorant, proud, and hateful individuals speaking their minds, I feel it’s only natural for me to stand my ground. For 99% of us, individuality and the pursuit of knowledge are the few true freedoms we actually possess. So, we shouldn’t squander it following the advice of the 1 percent. Keeping people uninformed, uneducated, and divided makes us easy to control. Wake the f*** up, we are all one. Recognize the real enemy!
I only recall seeing him in NYC at Lincoln center once, but always got most of his albums and at least 2 of his books over the years. The insight, commentary and humor were always impressive and memorable.
What happen to you my brother you were a genius !! I will enjoy all of your music especially we all most lost Detroit.power to you my brother to the poet and history for the time and want is going on now. GOD bless you my friend!! I am sorry we lost you .You will be remember to me as a genius ! Peace
danke danke thanks thanks from Austria, big love!! what a great Artist, what a voice inclusive social political. one time, im still glad about, i saw him in Linz.
I first heard GSH when I was living in Korea and a friend played one of his CDs for me and I fell in instant thrall with the song The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. That was my first year of eight in Korea, back in 2003. About five or six years later I was in a funk and motown band and we played Lady Day and John Coltrane which was just one of my favorite songs to play! I really love the drummer and bass player's groove and Gil is such an great poet with wonderful rhythm and phrasing. Really all of the musicians are amazing and have an excellent groove. Now so many years later I'm back home in Canada after spending time living in the UAE, Mongolia, and Brunei and I've never forgotten how his music makes me feel, but until lately I hadn't really heard much else besides that one CD my friend first played for me and which I immediately had to get a copy of. Now I've just started jamming with a few guys on my own solo stuff with is beat poetry jam band music I guess, and I've been working on a tribute of sorts to his song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" which I've started composing, just the lyrics so far, a work in progress, which I find it hard to find time to work on much because my masters study is keeping me pretty busy, but I did a little little bit more today. I can't wait till the day I can finish it, put the band behind it, and get it going. I wish I could have met him, talked to him, heard him play live, and even if I'd ever been so lucky, had the chance to jam with him. Maybe I'll get luckiest of lucky and cross paths with some of the muzos who played with him someday and get to jam with them and have a conversation. If not I'll just have to have my conversations with him and my imagination through his music which ain't that bad, to be honest! So glad I typed his name in and found something I hadn't heard before. I listened to this whole concert tonight as I've been pulling an all-nighter trying to finish my assignments, and it's been great company for the evening, though a bit distracting as I want to just give it my full undivided attention. I usually listen to instrumental music when I'm studying, my favorite go to often starting with Herbie Hancock, Headhunters and wherever else I end up, maybe some Jeff Beck, Polyphia, Billy Cobbham, Stone Rebel, Prince's Jass Funk Sessions 1977 Instrumental, The Meters, Brass Against the Machine, Jazz is Dead etc, and often just any random instrumental stuff that pops up on either RU-vid or Spotify after I pick a playlist, genre, or starting artist. This is the last course of my master's degree, which I've been loving doing, but I feel so excited for the fact that in about a month I'm going to be able to spend a whole lot more time and attention concentrated on music. Gil will definitely be on the rotation!
silverfir Glad you enjoyed this and also had the chance to experience the magic live. Maybe the music and truth he expressed continue to reverberate through our world.
It hasn't been hiding from you you weren't paying attention to the message in our music the generation from the 80s up thought they invented something but they didn't
@@THENUCODE you are truly blessed because you understand what is taking place tomorrow this not for us to say this can't happen in America what makes us any better than any other country don't be drawn into race conversations be more concern with that covid because if you die race won't any way sorry I said that peace
Met this poetic icon in Atlanta at a performance . His words awake your conscious and pause you to think. I am inspired and awoke. Rest in peace my brother. Your body of work is powerful, relevant and impressive today. One love.
@@user-rd2cp4li2k yes, I was. It does not ease the heartache of knowing he was dealing with addiction. I still listen to his music. It is inspiring and truthful. There is a song he sung about his addiction and how he wanted to go home. I cried. So sad. Someone should have cared for him. Where were the people who loved him?
@@g.sanders5022 "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" A junkie walking through the twilight I'm on my way home I left three days ago, but no one seems to know I'm gone Home is where the hatred is Home is filled with pain and it, might not be such a bad idea if I never, never went home again Stand as far away from me as you can and ask me why hang on to your rosary beads close your eyes to watch me die you keep saying, kick it, quit it, kick it, quit it God, but did you ever try to turn your sick soul inside out so that the world, so that the world can watch you die Home is where I live inside my white powder dreams home was once an empty vacuum that's filled now with my silent screams home is where the needle marks try to heal my broken heart and it might not be such a bad idea if I never, if I never went home again home again home again home again kick it, quit it kick it, quit it kick it, quit it kick it, can't go home again
@@THENUCODE thank you. I cry hearing him sing about his addiction. He bared his soul. I will always honor him. He gave us socially conscious music relevant to the plight of struggles in society. An intelligent, prolific poet, engaging singer and songwriter, and author. He was brilliant and is truly missed.
@@g.sanders5022 There were people, but sometimes that isn't enough sadly. I saw him perform with the midnight band in DC in the early 90s until his last tour that we saw in Oakland, and it was heartbreaking to see him dying slowly every time as the days went on. I cherish seeing him right next to Richard Pryor and James Brown and Parliament. He was a singular talent and his influence on culture in America are priceless and beyond important.
The first Gil Scot heron and the last poets album I bought took me 2yrs to get home with it because I get so high I would leave it at some party this was 1972
Super great music from that era, this new music cant hold a candle to the previous era. Gill scott heron albert collins stevie ray vaugh, muddy waters, war, traffic spirit, killer music coming from all directions. this was great
@@WOWTODAZ it was a term he used that meant he was a conduit for the masses interpreting what was going on in the government much like Bob Marley in Jamaica
@@WOWTODAZ Gil was well educated because his mother didn't play with education and he could have been a professional in any field but he didn't want constrictions so music became his vehicle
Every piece of music he recorded I purchased, not a scratch on one LP, reason is because I recorded each LP on Cassette. Then put the LP back in the jacket, taped up the cover and never used it again like every LP I did them all the same way. This Brother is a great lose, something caused this great spirit to fall into something that’s hard to get out of. Drugs is the cause of Death of many Geniuses. Rest in piece Brother Gill Scott-Heron you are truly missed by many you have touched.
His words and messages transcend the decades its 2021 and every topic sung about is relevant today we pay high taxes and Republicans across America are attempting to strip away voters rights and prejudice toward immigrants and minority communities.
Abso-bloody-lutely he was way ahead of ANY time, especially this time when good and bad are become all mixed up in a kind of moral muddy thinking/acting. Miss such pure, loving souls of integrity like Gil. Popularity is not a measure of greatness.
And don't we deserve it, be honest. Whities on the moon. What good does it do the poor and destitute, the hungry and deprived. White people are strange, on a planetary scale, a huge swathe of warlike tribes causing global devastation. See Michael Jackon's Earth Song!
could someone point me to somewhere i can study more about the "whawa?" chord Gil was talking about before the Bottle towards the end. Sounds super interesting
