One of those songs that stays with you for life. I heard this song when I was 12 yrs old and it brought tears to my eyes even though I had a family & a good life.. Have never been able to forget it...

When I was 12 year old, I was pretty depressed even tho I had a good and wealthy family. If I were to listen to this back then, I would of listened to this song every day.

I'm not sure... but after listening to the lyrics i think he was also stood up on his wedding day at the church in addition to all these people dying...i realy like this song even it's really sad, he also has a very nice voice

I love your honest heartfelt reaction. I was thinking as i watched , "its such a brutally honest emotional lyric" its hard not to tear up, and that's a brave emotional risk to take in front of almost 10,000 viewers,( im sure i couldn't do it!) So appreciate your openess and sensitivity. Take good care of yourself. Btw that song was a very big deal to my 9/10 year old self. I was a very shy awkward red haired kid with lots of freckles who went bright red when i was teased or felt clumsy or foolish. Somehow this song gave me comfort in my turmoil, and still to this day at 61 i can vividly relive the way it made feel ( obviously not as intense or bewildering as all those years ago) Music is a remarkable and beautiful thingthing Thanks 🙏

I have watched all the Alone again naturally reactions and I have to say that your reaction is the sweetest and best. When you first got emotional and try to cover your face, it melted my heart, and if fact, it made the tears start to flow for me. Gilbert O'Sullivan in an interview, said this song was not about his life. It was just an idea that he came up with and wrote. "Alone Again (Naturally)" is an introspective ballad, starting with the singer contemplating suicide after being left at the altar after his bride deserted him, and then telling about the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said that the song is not autobiographical, as he did not know his father (who died when O'Sullivan was 11) very well, and that his father had mistreated his mother. Also, his mother was still alive when the song was written.

Thanks for reacting to this - it's actually the saddest song I know ... and I still LOVE it -because it's so beautiful.. if you like to cry at songs (as I do) - you might also like Don McLean's "Vincent" - about painter Vincent Van Gogh -- so beautifully sung, and sensitive... Fix your audio issues, please. What is astounding to me is the juxtaposition of a cheerful melody with lyrics from a severely depressed person. It kind of rips you apart. I have always loved this song, right from its original release. That is why I watched your reaction.

In Casey Kasem's American Top 40 of the 1970s, "Alone Again (Naturally)" ranked as the fifth most-popular song of the decade (Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" was No. 1). "Alone Again (Naturally)" also spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Easy Listening chart. In total US sales for 1972, O'Sullivan's hit was topped only by Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". Both songs were nominated for a Grammy Award in the Song of the Year and Record of the Year categories in 1973, but Flack won both.
