It's over now you've had your fun
, get up them stairs go on quickly don't run
Take off your shoes, the both of you's
, leave them down outside the door, turn the landing light,
off - no wait leave it on, it might make the night, that much easier to be gone
And in the morning who'll be wide awake, and eating snow flakes oh as opposed to those flakes.
(We Will) We Will (We Will) We will
That afternoon we spent the day, with uncle Frank (remember?) and
his wife auntie Mae,
Well do you know since then I've received up to four letters all of which repeat the same yeah yeah yeah,
they say thrilled to bits, can't believe you came, we've re-lived it both, over time and time again and if there's
Ever a chance or even half, you might be our way, oh would you promise to stay
(We will) We will (We will) We Will
Yeah.yeah.yeah
It's not easy pretending that you cannot hear, once you've suffered the afflictions within
It's no use in an ending to proclaim from the start that the
moral of the stories to begin.
On Sunday next if the weather holds, we'll have that game
but I bagsy being-in-goal
not because I'm good, or because I think I should, it's just that well at my age I think standing still woh woh woh,
Would really suit me best, do we all agree, hands up those who do, hands up those who don't
I see well in that case will we please be kind enough, if not
on Sunday to go to mass on Monday
(We will) We will
(We will ) We will yeah yeah yeah (We will)

10th March 2024 - I visited here today because I have just heard "Alone Again (Naturally)" after many years, I thought I would go back through Gilbert's 70's repertoire, I was 6 to 10 years old at Gilbert's height of fame and now remember hearing this song over 54 years ago. Thank you Gilbert O'Sullivan your dulcet tones were a joy to hear, even as a child. I will be 60 this year. What a golden age for great music

I was 18 in 1971 when this song hit me like a ton of bricks. Parking my car to go into work, it came on the radio, I turned the engine off but not the radio as I sat transfixed. It made me feel so sad, I don't really know why, but I love it. ( I was into Zeppelin, Free, Clapton etc at the time 😳 )

All these comments are so special about one of the greatest talents of our time , ie evoking happiness and sadness at the same time , plus childhood memories of past times with our parents and siblings we have since lost and miss terribly , such innocent times in a very different world , sure it wasn't perfect but what I wouldn't give to take my wife and kids back there ! Thank you Gilbert for the music that means so much to so many and may God bless you as he did with your exceptional talent xx

These songs take you back to time when we were young and this music makes you ache to go back in time ! Makes me want to cry! Gilbert's songs are the sound track to my life growing up in the early 70s! Also loved T.rex and Marc Bolans music too!But Gilbert's songs convey a poignancy that can never equalled! I feel so sad not to be able to go back in time to see mum and dad as they are long gone and never coming back and these songs such as "Alone again naturally" convey great memories! "I remember I cried when my father died never wishing to hide the tears" really cracks me up when I hear that lyric! My wife Eileen always mentions that the song "Reminds you of your dad doesn't it" and I can hardly hold back the tears! His songs always touch a nerve in me, but shouldn't great music do that? I feel so sad that I can't go back to those times and relive them!

So true. Most of my peers in junior high just deemed any music that didn't feature loud drums and screeching guitars uncool. Not that l didn't enjoy the heavier stuff as well, and still love all kinds of music. My playlists often have artists like Aerosmith and John Denver back to back. My friends still think I'm nuts, but at my age l don't care. I've grown content in my uncoolness.🙂

I'd forgotten all about this song. As soon as I played it, I remembered it all. It was a small hit between Nothing Rhymed and Alone Again (Naturally) and was overshadowed by those classics. @johnriggs4929
@johnriggs4929 4 года назад
Mmm... not sure how he would have managed that: he didn't get married until 1980 - 9 years after this song was released, and his first child was born the same year, the second two years later. It's not autobiographical at all - just one of those songs that can fit one's own personal circumstances in certain cases, as it did with me, when I lost my first wife to cancer when my children were still relatively young. Very talented though, no doubt about it.

I had no idea who Gibert O'Sullivan was until I saw a Top of the Pops repeat the other day. Like a masterclass in song writing the harmonic changes flow and tease out various emotions. The coda (bridge after the 2nd chorus) is fluid and seamlessly links the verse/chorus format. The haunting chorus compliments the introspections of the pensive lyrics and the gradual slowing down of the music until it ends helps create an elegant flow of thought and emotion that ends in a very similar place to the beginning. Sublime...

His early songs had such fantastic lyrics such as We Will , Nothing Rhymed , No Matter How I try , Alone Again and Ooh Wakka Do Wakka Day. Outstanding songwriter.

Yes they do. All my Irish relatives (now dead) talked with these rhythms in their speech. I have so mixed feelings when I listen to this song (and I do listen). I miss them so and can hear them here. On the other hand, what Gilbert O'Sullivan does here is genius in song-writing and I listen as I have to appreciate that. One day I will be objective.

..... and I bagsy being in goal. What a lyric. We all used to say 'bagsy' back then when we wanted to claim something. I love Gilbert's songs from this era.

Yes, its clever song-writing. No-one does every-day expressions and nuances in speech better than Gilbert O'Sullivan.

Heard this today for the first time in a long time. GOS is genius and there’s no getting away from it. An incredibly talented singer songwriter who still doesn’t get the kudos he so richly deserves. But we know he’s up there with the greats don’t we? This is a beautifully crafted song.

Alone Again Naturally and Nothing Rhymned are for me are among two of the deepest songs in popular music. Gilbert has created a fantastic musical legacy. As a proud Irishman we are immensly proud to call him one of our own.
