Vocal ensemble Capella Cracoviensis and musical ensemble Capriccio Stravagante, both led by harpsichordist and conductor Skip Sempé, perform the program ‘Adieu, monsieur Rameau’ during the Utrecht Early Music Festival 2018. The program consists of an arrangement of the famous French requiem ‘Messe des morts’ by Jean Gilles. The arrangement, most probably done by François Rebel and François Francoeur, was made for Rameau’s memorial service. Rebel and Francoeur updated the mass by changing the instrumentation and adding movements and references.
The musical program
♫ Gilles - Messe des morts (Parisian version, 1764) - Introit and Kyrie
♫ Gilles - Hommage à Rameau: Gravement (from Dardanus) - Graduel I, Graduel II, Offertoire and Sanctus
♫ Gilles - Hommage à Rameau: Tristes apprêts (from Castor et Pollux) - Elévation, Benedictus, Agnus Dei and Communion
♫ Gilles - Sommeil éternel de Rameau: Rondeau tendre (from Dardanus)
♫ Gilles - Apothéose de Rameau: Air des esprits infernaux (from Zoroastre)
The soloists
♫ Judith van Wanroij [soprano]
♫ Sean Clayton [haute-contre]
♫ Davy Cornillot [tenor]
♫ Lisandro Abadie [bass]
Recording: Sunday the 2th of September 2018 in TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht.

Waking up listeners - Capriccio Stravagante is world-renowned for their memorable interpretations of Renaissance and Baroque music. Founded in 1986 by Skip Sempé, the ensemble of three to seventy performers incorporates Capriccio Stravagante, the Capriccio Stravagante Renaissance Orchestra and Capriccio Stravagante Les 24 Violons. By the mid 1990s, the ensemble had built up an extensive discography for which they received international acclaim and had performed in major concert halls and festivals worldwide. Nonchalance & Power - The ensembles seek a musical aesthetic whose values have been nearly lost to contemporary musical life. Unlike many other early music ensembles, they adhere to traditional principles of articulation, rhetoric, scholarship, imagination and talent to break down conventions that have little to do with historical practice, particularly those originating in twentieth-century ‘Baroque’ performance practices. Capriccio Stravagante has recorded extensively for the Paradizo, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Astrée, Alpha and Teldec labels. Man-made beauty - The Capriccio Stravagante Renaissance Orchestra offers virtuoso performers on a highly distinctive musical instrumentarium that includes violins, viols, recorders, cornetti, sackbuts, krummhorns, shawms, lutes, harps, harpsichords, virginals, organs, and percussion. Derived from the instrumental virtuosity that sixteenth-century music demanded, their playing techniques are completely unknown to classically trained instrumentalists and mainstream audiences today. The ensemble is the largest and most luxurious gathering yet assembled for the performance of masterpieces from this Golden Age of musical creativity. Awards & Rewards - Capriccio Stravagante’s exceptional chamber ensemble playing has inspired three generations of musicians, many of whom have gone on to enjoy international careers. The Capriccio Stravagante Prize was created by Skip Sempé in 1997, and served to encourage numerous musicians in their early careers. It is particularly touching that many of those musicians have now become an integral part of Capriccio Stravagante’s activities. Sempé receives lasting inspiration from the key members of these renewed generations.

The entire performance bespeaks richness and quality. Notice that the great Skip Sempe does not throw himself around in a look-at-me style so beloved of some other conductors and he also knows when to simply stand motionless and allow the music to flow from the professional musicians! Most enlightening!

Jean Gilles is basically an unknown composer outside France, great Baroque composer and musician, his famous Requiem to honor Rameau is performed here by the awesome harphsicordist Skip Sempe, brilliant performance.

Interesting to hear this version made more than 50 years after Gilles composed this excellent requiem. It shows that the original work was way better. The horns and drums give it a kitsch feel that it surely doesn't need.

"The horns and drums give it a kitsch feel that it surely doesn't need." What a pity, you couldn't say it the master Ms. Rameau - he himself added the horns into his second version of CASTOR ET POLLUXE ("Tristes apprets") and so you've more a feeling for good music then Ms. Rameau with his kitsch feeling...: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pBqLq64sQ58.html&

The original is unfortunately lost, all interpretation of the Requiem tries to rebuild the authencity of the Gilles intentions (except this one, I think Rebel and Francoeur wanted to fit Rameau's rich orchestration in order to avoid to have too much difference between the Requiem and the Castor et Pollux extracts, I'm loving it because Skip Sempé assumes to bring it over the top. But isn't it a tribute to Rameau after all?). Apparently, there were 200 musicians for Rameau's funeral, I can't imagine how it sounded.

Very beautiful, and one of the greatest values of this performance is the good pronunciation of latin, instead of the horrible french pronunciation.

Oh how I miss the characteristic extra measure in the Introitus! It creates such a sense of longing, Inne-Halten, … e.g. @11:36 How dare they slash it? What a shame… it sounds rushed to me. Still a great performance of course! :)

No, it is complicated. It is some kind of a meddley including the original Requiem from Jean Gilles and many extracts from Rameau's opera, works from Michel Corrette and even Italian music. It's very fun for a requiem
