+Alex Paulsen For Sure Clark was one of the No.1 Guys, if not THE No.1 Guy. All of those clueless Sennafans think Senna and co. drive the Real Drive-Machines. And todays Cars are just Playstation-Drive. But in Real the late 80s Cars was 3/4 like todays Cars. The REAL Drive-Machines are the Cars of the mid 60s. 480Hp, No Wings, No hot Slicks, No Nothing. And if you build out the Engine out one of this Cars, it was so light, that two People can lift it. No Break-Distance Signs. Dirty, Bumpy Roads and Tracks with 13-20Km long Lap. That was the Real Shit. And when Villeneuve and Lauda drives, this was the last Era of REAL Driving-Machines.

Each season brings new improvements to cars. If you took a driver from 20 years ago and put him into todays car, he probably wouldn't be as fast. In the same way, if you took todays driver and put him in a 20 year old car, he probably wouldn't be as fast. Drivers drive to the best of their ability with the technology available. That is why drivers can have long careers. They grow with the technology.

+Al bundy Im a big senna fan, but like u said, the real driving was performed by the guys in the old cars. i just have respect to every driver on that era, because every time they entered the car they knew there is a big chance that they will die. probably every champion and even driver were more skilled then senna and sure from today drivers. i think that fangio was way better then every other driver in f1 history and people tend to forget him. the man had 5 championships in 7 years in the worst safety times in f1 (no seat belts, very hard cars) and he did in different cars. we dont see people like this in the last 35 years but i wish that one day they will understand that today f1 is require much less skill then the old times and they will change something, even tho the chances is low.

Prior the jump to F1, his last season in Atlantic (1976) he got 10 pole position out of 10 with 9 win and 1 2nd place. That says everything. For me he was the best driver the world has ever known, no question.

Definitely both a force to be reckoned with and one of a kind, neva there will be anyone like Gilles and Senna. Senna was inspired by Gilles they were natural, that kind of talent, stamina cannot be taught, both were an inspiration to many it's too bad the racing world has changed so much that it is impossible to offer that freedom to be great,we oldies were fortunate enuff to witness and appreciate.

For me the greatest ever driver is the one who overtakes as clean as possible especially when they have the fastest car, you see how Gilles overtakes then you will realize how perfectly he positions his car in front of the other guys without them even expecting his car to appear in front of them, he's like invisible or something, he's so fluid driving with such an old car that it makes me wonder how he would've driven the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton nowadays

Holy Shit! 50 second mark - best controlled rate spin effort I have ever seen.We had a guy who could drive like this called Peter Brock here in Australia.

Gilles in my mind was the best racer not because of wins not because of the fastest lap it was because of the passion he had, all these SENNA comments, no doubt he was also a great driver and amazing but different time different cars and different style. Gilles kept you at the edge of your seat and he never gave up no matter how damaged his car was....he also drove semi blind in rain and most drivers would of pulled into the pits not GILLES he kept going...that is passion

That previous quote from Alain Prost sums it up perfectly. "Gilles was the last great driver. The rest of us are just a bunch of good professionals.” It might be one of those "you had to be there" things, but true greatness is obvious when it is happening. Gilles Villeneuve was all that is great about motor-racing. And greatness is not about arithmetic. Senna was great, Schumacher was good, and Hamilton is a school-teacher.

He was too fast for his own good I think. He was certainly the fastest and most spectacular driver of his time, maybe even in racing history. But he did break a lot of cars. Personally, I'd rank Gilles #3 of the best F1 drivers of all time behind Stirling Moss and Ronnie Peterson. I don't think they were faster than him, but they were better at saving tyres, engine, brakes, etc.. Gilles just went as fast as he could all the time :D

Salute to Gilles, Ayrton, and Schumi for giving F1 their all. F1 gods, all of them. Although I never got to watch Gilles and Ayrton in their time, watching their RU-vid vids makes for a very interesting viewing, where it was man+car, not man+car+electronics+engineer. Sometimes, I wonder what sin we F1 fans committed to be stuck with Crashtor Maldonado. Also, just my opinion, but Hamilton seems to be part of the same breed as the F1 gods...the driver who gives it his all. Let's hope this is correct.

Schumacher gets a downvote from me... His success is mostly credited to the death of Senna, and the lack of competition he had. Shumacher was an anti-competitive racer, although he was confronted on the track by other drivers, it was to no extent of what Senna, or any other driver would have done for 1st place. I think Schumacher just happened to be a slightly better driver in the right place at the right time. When he made his return to F1, it was obvious that new and emerging talents had rendered him obsolete.
@garyb5402
@garyb5402 10 лет назад
Your right man Hamilton is from the same breed as Senna and Gilles, fast and unyielding drivers who pour their heart into the sport and still find even more to give. I have to disagree with you about Schumacher though he only got his first two championships at Benetton because of Senna's untimely end and the Williams car not being the best during early '94, not to mention all the crashes and controversies he caused, i'm sure he would have won a championship or more if he hadn't done that, but he would never have won as many as he did without all the dirty tactics.

Well spotted... spin akker = You are right - this is almost unfathomable... not even recognisable to the untrained eye. He even breaks in a segment of the spin with his back to the line/facing wrong way! F1 of today is almost unrecognisable in its form to what it was back then. If it were not for a few long standing constructors and a couple of engine manufacturers - it simply would not be identifiable to the sport that it once was or even comparable.

In a sport whereby just turning up on race day puts your life on the line, anyone who is so consistently willing drive up to - and beyond - the limits of the car is going to have numbered days. Then again, one could be more calculated and skillfully avoid death on the track, only to then smash one's head on a rock in a 1mph skiing accident...
@Metal-Possum
@Metal-Possum 10 лет назад
If you're at the front of the pack, you're a racing driver. If you're in the middle, or near the back, then you're just a guy in a racing car. Non-competitive racers are just minor obstacles for the top few drivers of the season, driving safely and within your comfort zone, and the car's comfort zone, is like jogging a 100m sprint because you don't like the feeling of being puffed.
@huss03
@huss03 10 лет назад
Alex Paulsen I read an interview with an F1 driver who said it's exactly the other way around...The guy who is at the front is doing it easy; that's why he's at the front! His car is working for him perfectly, everything is in balance, and he's out in the open air. It's the guys behind him who are working hard...
@murphymoerf

"Who is to say that he had not seen more, done more and learned more in his few years than many people do in a lifetime? To do something well is so worthwhile that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one's ability, for I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone." - That's a great quote from Bruce McLaren about a fellow driver who was killed in an accident. And it sums up Gilles' career and legacy perfectly I think
@Metal-Possum
@Metal-Possum 8 лет назад
Huxxy It's like a Scalextric race. The guy in front just has to hold his throttle still, and the car will drive without escaping the slot. The guy behind will have to drive twice as hard to catch up, and put himself at greater risk of an accident.

Amazing, great video. The F1 needs drivers like this again. Drivers today are bland, plain, and too "sportsmanlike" for my liking. I want drivers that race with a passion to be the fastest at any given time, like Gilles used to. Not drivers that try to save the car for next race. Gilles respected his opponents, but his grit and determination made him do crazy things we will never see again in F1, which is pretty damn sad.
