ET's Lauren Zima caught up with Gillian Anderson before the 2021 Critics' Choice Awards, which aired March 8 on The CW. Anderson was nominated for 'The Crown' and reflected upon her win at the Golden Globes. She also responded to the controversy surrounding Alec Baldwin's tweet about her 'switching accents.' The 52-year-old actress was born in Chicago and moved to London when she was 5. When she was 11, she moved back to the United States and lived in Michigan, spending enough time in both the U.S. and Britain to become accustomed to both accents, per The Guardian.

I hate when people try to make her out to be inauthentic. She's a rare case, someone who is truly bi-accented, she doesn't have one default accent. I think it's fascinating!
@SomethingSomethingg
@SomethingSomethingg Год назад
Well, considering she's the only public figure who actually does this, and quite possibly the only person in the world, is it really unfair for people to think she's inauthentic? I've never seen anyone with such an extreme case that they can naturally speak in a posh London accent one second and then a generic/semi-midwest American accent a second later without any trace of the two being blended together.
@rbarnett3200
@rbarnett3200 Год назад
@@SomethingSomethingg John Barrowman is another famous example. This isn't incredibly uncommon but Gillian Anderson is something of an extreme example, but she grew up both in England and the US. She changed her accent to fit into the situation. It's not inauthenticity. We all do this. Think about how your accent sounds like in a job interview compared to when you speak to your family. My parents are from a different part of England to where I grew up. I picked up the local accent but I use their accent (to a degree) when I speak to them. So I have my regional accent and their's when I talk to them.

Gillian Anderson is one of the most amazing people - she’s completely real, incredibly talented, and just such a lovely, warm and humorous person! It’s hard to believe she could portray such a straight laced woman in The X Files when she is so full of warmth and humour in reality! I was lucky enough to meet her at the BAFTAs a few years ago, and she was just lovely! 😊❤️ She has been dealing with the accent comments for decades - people should know by now she was brought up part in London and part in the states, and anyone who suggests it’s not genuine is just ignorant! I think it’s a gift rather than a handicap - it’s great she can speak in two different accents, just like anyone who is bilingual!

I grew up in the Deep South and was raised with a very distinct southern accent. Now I live in Los Angeles, and I speak with no accent because I have been away from the south for so long. But whenever I talk to my mom on the phone or go home to visit, that southern accent comes back in a flash. So I fully understand what Gillian is saying. I think this is true for a lot of people in lots of places. I don't think people should be judged for their accents. They're natural for most people.

This. I'm in the exact same boat, born and raised as a young child in the South and then spent much of teenage years and adult life in the North. Speak differently, depending on what part of the country in. Also, I used to spend a lot of time with some Irish kids over here in the states, and when I went to Ireland for three months most of the Irish there thought I was a native. I wasn't making any special effort to sound Irish, it just happened as a result of spending so much time with them. I would think that actors would especially be prone to this kind of thing. But I guess no one ever told Alec Baldwin! ;)

She’s far more elegant and succinct that Hilary Baldwin. Gillian said “I grew up between two countries, and whoever is in my ear is the one my accent takes.” Hilary droned on for like 8 minutes, “My family lives in Spain, my mom, dad, brother, nephew, they’re all over there. I grew up with two cultures and I’m raising my children to be bilingual...” and BLA BLA BLA, LIE LIE LIE. When it’s not lies (like Gillian) they’re no need to drone on and on. Here is the difference. Gillian changes her accent depending on the accent of the person to whom she is speaking. If she speaks to a British person, she speaks with a British accent. If she speaks to an American, she speaks with an American accent. It’s the same thing as speaking a common language with a person. In Contrast, Hilaria Baldwin- (a native English speaker BTW) changes to Spanish-accented English so as to be DIFFERENT from the person to whom she is speaking.

If I am in the UK my accent is a stronger British, if I am in Canada my British accent is lighter but still noticeable with some words. There are many people who have duel accents and float between two countries. Unless this is you, it is hard to explain. When I am in England, I feel a sense of comfort that allows my British accent to get stronger.

Gillian is bidialectal because as she said she grew up in 2 different countries. I did too, between Singapore and Australia so like her I switch accents very naturally when I speak English. Even between Singaporean born Aussie friends of mine, we may speak to each other in an Australian accent because that's natural to us but when we are in Singapore, we'll speak to family and friends who are local there in a different accent that's common to Singapore. I have friends in Singapore who never heard me speak with an Aussie accent before then sometimes, out of the blue, it comes out and at first they are surprised but then they realise it's natural since I moved to Australia when I was 13 and went to a high school where I was the only Asian person there for 4 years so I picked up the Aussie accent that way. I also have Aussie friends who tell me I don't sound like I lived in Singapore before because I speak with a natural Australian accent, so yeah, for some people, it takes them a while to get used to seeing someone speak with a different accent.

When I speak Spanish, my accent changes a bit depending on the accent of who I’m talking to. My original accent is Argentinian (Buenos Aires), but I’ve lived in Texas and Florida for more than half of my 46 years, so I easily adjust my accent to match that of the person I’m speaking with. It just sounds weird to me to use my strong Argentinian accent with them, since it sounds so different from theirs. When I’m around Argentinians or Uruguayans, I go straight back to my original accent.

My accent often drifts towards the person's I'm speaking to... and my natural accents are a "varied" as Colorado/Washington/Chicago... which is to say pretty middle of the road. But I love accents and I think I just get lulled into accents and speech patterns. I spent some time in Scotland, and while I didn't end up with an accent, I ended up speaking with my American accent but Scottish speech patterns... lilt and all! Going to the south is the worst because I affect a strong accent and have never lived there. The biggest shock I ever heard was when I found out that John Barrowman was Scottish... the first time I heard him talk to his parents and out comes this Scottish brogue!! It's like night and day... so cool!

@@susanfudge1737 our country is worst in Covid at the moment, everything is closed, vaccination goes super slowly, our healthcare system is overloaded - hospitals have to transport patients to other countries (Poland, Germany etc.) and we have the highest death-toll in the EU.

Oh and I should also mention that Gillian says that she's being haunted by the spirit of Margaret Thatcher. She's seen her in a room in her house and when walking down a street, looked in a shop window and there was Thatcher looking at her.

Alec Baldwin's wife faked being latina and pretending to not know English words. Alec needs to check is wife and leave others who don't lie about their ethnicity alone.

I grew up between Argentina and Australia. My English and Spanish are fluent. I don't have any accent in English. But my Spanish varies a bit sometimes. Like my San Juan accent is different to my accent when I'm in the city of Buenos Aires. I can't help the fact that it sort of changes a bit after spending time in a place, it is subconscious from my childhood having lived in both I just tend to adapt according to my environment. I can understand Gillian Anderson. Hilaria Accent on the other hand seems fake, however I will say that I've heard her Spanish and I must say her Spanish is good so it is clear she did spend a lot of time there. Don't know why she felt the need to lie but I don't think it is news worthy either

The criticism of her is ridiculous. She genuinely grew up in the UK and US in her formative years and even since. She's not faking the Brit accent like Britney and Madonna were. If she grew up in the USA and France, no-one would comment if she spoke French with a true French accent ratther than a midwest one. Jeez.

This happens to me in Spanish. My Dad has a Peruvian accent in Spanish and my mother has a Cuban accent. I speak to my Dad I have a Peruvian accent and when I speak to my Mom in Spanish I have a Cuban accent.
