Galen leather website explains vegetable tanned leather process really well. I was always under the impression that veg tanned leather is a process that uses natural tannins such as tree bark, walnut husks, and tumaric etc. Not sure what natural tannins would be used to create purples and grey etc...flowers etc wouldn't be strong enough to effectively change leather (cotton yes but not leather) maybe they claim vegetable tanned simply because they use a saltwater solution to remove the hair from the animal but it looks like the cloud color is created with a chemical leather paint of some short. Which creates a coating on the leather and would explain why its not getting a patina like natural dies create and why conditioners are not soaking in due to the barrier the synthetic leather paint creates on the leather. As im typing this it sounds like you've come to a similar conclusion 😅 hope you find more answers about the leather. Im curious, too❤

Yes, you nailed it 💯. I completely agree and I don’t know why I thought the purple would patina not just with shine, but with a bit of color change. I love my leathers to look worn and used but not abused. 😂 I had a huge brain freeze when I ordered this not realizing that it wasn’t going to change as I wanted it to. I’m going to 📌 your comment. Thank you so much for the well written response.

@MamaGraciePlans I think the cloud is a beautiful color, especially as spring is approaching 😍 I love a well-worn leather cover when I see them here on yt but actually stress myself out when I make marks on my own covers! What?! I'm a mess sometimes 🙃 😆 anyway. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for posting ❤️

I'm newly retired and use the schedule in the dailies to track my eating, hydration, sleep schedule, mood, elimination, exercise etc in an effort to develop a new routine that will help me feel my best and be more productive.

That sounds like a great way to utilize the daily schedule without having to have a job outside of the home. I am glad that its working for you. Since this video, I have added another daily page and it has a tiny schedule on the side of it which I am trying to write in my schedule of what I did that day to see if I am productive as wanting to be.

Veg tanned leathers even if dyed will patina - deepening in color and getting shinier. However, the grade of the leather makes a difference in how it patinas and also treatments done to the leather. I don’t believe they use a full grain veg tanned leather as the pieces and markings are too perfect. And using a lower grade can result in a different rate of patina. All pics I’ve seen of cloud look like it’s got a finish/sealant on it which can change its ability to patina. Also, generally speaking you can’t dye leather to a pastel color so it’s very possible they painted the leather (or maybe used an acrylic dye or something similar…though I expect it’s basically painted) so it’s still veg tanned leather but it’s been treated for the color and finish. Which will prevent water, oils etc from penetrating it and also majorly slow down the patina process.

You know me Shivaun. I should have known better than to think a Gillio purple would darken to a darker shiny purple. 😂 I feel like I’m losing pieces of my rational thinking. I agree with you. I think they painted this and then sealed it. You don’t think Gillio used a full grain leather to make the cloud? 😮 the pockets are essentially smooth and the outer is a tad pebbly but feels smooth if that makes sense. I did order a yellow as I’ve seen changes in that one. It’s sitting in customs as I type this up. It’s going to replace my cloud and I’ll box this up for whoever wants this. I love VDS, but I also love Gillio. I feel like Gillio is cheaper for certain things I want in a planner cover that I’d have to pay extra for with VDS. Janet leather is the best and one day I’ll have the yellow VDS.

@@MamaGraciePlans The only reason I question full-grain is the price - painting the highest quality leather seems like a waste. But there's also cheaper quality full-grain so it could be that. But usually full-grain has wrinkles, moles, scars etc. on parts of the hide and I never see those on Gillios so that leads me to believe either they aren't full-grain. But honestly don't know. Yellow does patina - it appears dyed and just like buying a veg tan from ELG, ChicSparrow, VDS etc. that's been dyed and darkens over time. It's funny - Cloud A6 is on my list of planners to try. I expected it didn't change and am ok with that - just curious about the color...for a toss-around it will always stay pretty nice cover.

I've owned a couple of Moterm covers for a few years now and none have them have patinaed. But all of my other leather covers have patinaed. Those covers are made by Van Der Spek, Eternal Leather Goods and Naya Paperie.

Oh my goodness that’s such a bummer that your moterm veg tan has not changed. Is that something you dislike or like about leather? I love VDS. I have 2. I also love the look of eternal leather that Allie Brown has. I’ve heard many great things from Naya paperie and wanted to make an order with her for my Christmas 2024 wish.

@@MamaGraciePlans No, honestly, it just something that I accepted. 😌 But, I do prefer my covers to patina too. I'm planning on buying another VDS cover or Naya Paperie cover probably whenever they have another sale. I want to get one for my 5 year journal.

Although Moterm has started selling veg tanned leathers not all their covers are veg tanned so most won’t patina. But also the grade of leather they use isn’t the highest quality which can affect how quickly it patinas. And dark colors will be slower to patina. All that said the speed of patina is also very dependent on the person and their hands and how oils transfer, how often they touch and rub on it and also how much light exposure the cover gets. There’s so many factors. But true veg tan will patina, but slower if it’s been treated or lower grade or if you don’t touch it all the time. 😊

The undyed are the only ones that truly change colors. The died ones, while they are still vegetarian tanned, do not change colors. Dying protects the leather so it does not change color over time. It will soften, but the color will remain the same. Only undyed leathers patina.
@JustScribble
@JustScribble 5 месяцев назад
That’s not a completely accurate statement. Dyed veg tanned leathers darken and deepen too (in addition to getting shinier). That’s not prevented by dying the leather. Now some brands treat their dyed leathers and glaze it and process it after dying. Which came make it not change in the same way.

Hi, on their website, when I choose a cloud cover, it says that it's vegetable tanned, so maybe it just needs more time to change. I don't know that much about leather, but at least its dyed the same was as the other colors. I bet you can get an answer if you send them an email. Before I had several questions, and I wrote an email to them, and they wrote back to me pretty quickly. I also believe that Mella has one of these colors in an old cover and maybe can show you a picture of how it looks :)

@@bubblefrog1965 hehe that’s completely ok. I do the same thing at times. I’ll ask Mella to show me a photo of hers. I couldn’t get any of the photos to show up in the group. Thank you for your help ❤️

I haven't been able to find a well aged gillio cloud anywhere online. I hate to think of selling this, but I prefer patina and change to the leather especially if its toted as vegetable tanned that changes over time. If you have had a cloud and it changed please leave a comment. It will give me hope knowing that mine will change as well. Thanks!

The heavier dye process on the cloud and lotus compared to more natural colours on the other two means they may shine up but won’t change colour/patina that way.

Hi Julia. Thank you so much for helping me figure this out. I was going mad trying to figure out why my cloud wasn’t changing colors. As long as she molds and shines I’ll be happy. This makes sense.

@@MamaGraciePlans I have lotus covers for years now. They are vegetable tanned leather and might catch up stains as other colours. They will definitely patina slower than other vegetable tanned leather and might only be shinier and not noticeably darker. They also soften around like the undyed.
