OBSCURIST TOURIST 111 - Deep in the Colorado Rockies sits the ghost town of Gilman, one of the best preserved abandoned towns I've ever come across. I drove past this a few years back when I was forced to take a detour due to excessive snowfall on my way to Aspen. Gilman is what is referred to as a "modern" ghost town, considering that it was abandoned in 1984 rather than the late 1800s or early 1900s.
Founded in 1886 during the Colorado Silver Boom, the town later became a center of lead and zinc mining in Colorado, centered on the now-flooded Eagle Mine. It was abandoned in 1984 by order of the Environmental Protection Agency because of toxic pollutants, including contamination of the ground water, as well as unprofitability of the mines.
Come along as I explore this wonderfully preserved ... and somewhat creepy place.

I see Gilman as a precursor to what happened recently in East Palestine. Which I live 60 minutes away from.

Wow. That’s crazy. I can’t believe you’re so close! Despite what the officials are saying, I tend to believe the residents more in terms of what’s going on in East Palestine - so things don’t look good. I hope you’re wrong about it turning into a Gilman, but time will tell. Stay safe!!! ❤️

I drove through there in the late 70's when a few people still lived there. I visited lots of Abandoned towns in the mountains in the 70's. Most of the roads went over the mountains and back down again where these mining towns situated. What was strange is how people left cloths in the closets and belongings. It is so cold in the winter that they probably left to get out once the towns were abandoned.

Yeah, it’s crazy how quickly people are packed up (or didn’t pack up at all) and left these towns.

I went through that town in the early 80s. Have numerous cool artifacts. And pictures. the bowling alley was in much better shape. The mine office had lots of paperwork. The houses had dishes. Yes cool place.
@ObscuristTourist

That would have been so cool to see back when it was newly abandoned.
@LoraD-oo9xz

Don't tell authorities that you took artifacts. That's illegal. Tourists have literally destroyed old ghost towns one artifact at a time. Even the wood off the cabins. 😢
@LoraD-oo9xz

Some old towns have completely disappeared as one tourist at a time took "cool" artifacts home.

I used to work in the forest right near there for the state. We took many a poop inside those abandoned buildings.

As far as I know from watching a couple of other videos, there is a back path that does lead to the town with a couple of other attractions On the way to Gilman. You might have to look it up though cause I’m not sure exactly where.

Question for ya, planning on going with a couple of friends but when you went how heavy was security around there?
@ObscuristTourist
@ObscuristTourist 4 месяца назад
There was absolutely no security. I knew someone who went there recently, and he also said he had no issues. I would suggest, especially with a group of friends, walking in completely silence to listen for noises and other voices to determine if security is on site. It’s always better to be aware of them before they are aware of you and then to maneuver accordingly. Good luck!

Towards the end of the video when you walked outta that last building I thought I saw a guy in black or a black shadow-way behind you. Just a real quick movement. I dunno if maybe I’m seein things. But it was right after you said you got an anxious feeling.
@ObscuristTourist
@ObscuristTourist Месяц назад
Yeah, could be something. Just a bizarre vibe there from the moment I entered that last building. Felt like there was an animal nearby in retrospect. But perhaps it was a gut feeling for something else. Creepy place, regardless. 😱

I live 10 minutes from Gilman and have hiked into that canyon to fish. It's all private property and an EPA Superfund site. In the 80's the mine leached serious heavy metals into the river and killed all life for 4 miles down river. Always wanted to explore but because I am a local and know better my LEO friends and the caretaker of the property tell me Id be arrested if caught. If I did I certainly wouldn't film it while showing my face. You're right the ground is extremely contaminated but more so in the canyon by the main shaft. So much so you begin to feel sick after a short time b
@ObscuristTourist
@ObscuristTourist 19 дней назад
Some confusion about who owned it at the time of filming, but I do know there was a change in ownership once the planned ski resort fell through - hence the lack of security. Contamination is always a concern, so I don’t touch anything and I try to be as quick as possible. I was wearing a mask for most of it as well, only taking it off briefly. Regardless, no ill effects then or now.

There is one in New Jersey. A whole development abandoned since the late 70s an early 80s due to Rayon. I don't know if it is still there. I have to look it up. But this story sounds so familiar to the NJ one.

Hey, does anyone know who currently owns this property by chance? I was passing by a few weeks ago and have a video idea in mind. I assume permission is going to be slim to none but its worth a shot. Thanks!
@VahleZoo
@VahleZoo 4 месяца назад
The Ginn Corporation (Bobby Ginn) but they will not give permission as it is a Superfund site 😢 and the EPA is who made it off limits. I spoke to Bobby Ginn HIMSELF and he stated he could not person care less... but he cannot give permission

Ginn Corporation, but due to EPA restrictions … no one will give legally-binding permission for safety issues.
@ObscuristTourist

My advice is to suss out the situation and see if any security is actively on site. Security won’t do a deep dive into the buildings, but it will do a sweep now and again to look for cars parked nearby, etc. I can’t imagine they do this often anymore, but I’m sure it still happens.
