Fr. The moment that really sticks out to me is at Rory's 21st birthday party when Lane is introducing Zack and Rory is introducing Logan. Just the stark contrast of how Rory got a hot, rich, adoring boyfriend who was obsessed with her vs how Lane got a crappy, unhygienic looking, dumb guy that never did anything nice for her. And it really shows in that scene that I'm talking about, with Logan greeting Zack with proper manners and Zack acting weird.

Hating on blonde girls is the classic NLOG move of the 2000s, being blonde seemed to be the most integral beauty standard of that decade (other than being thin, white, tall, the usual beauty standards which span across decades). Looking back it's weird how idolised a hair colour was, but it made hating on blonde women the easiest way to go against the grain and be NLOG.
@seeleunit2000
@seeleunit2000 5 дней назад
Oh, it wasn't just in the 2000s. That was something that was happening for decades. There's a reason the "all blondes are evil" trope is a thing. Just like the fixation with thinnest was a massive thing back in 2000s, 90s, 80s, 70s,...ect. it's nothing new. And scary enough that concept is starting to make a slow come back and I'm not too pleased with that

I still like Luke because he was the father figure that Rory needed. And I SO agree with you about Richard because I never understood how fans can love Richard while completely forgetting how manipulative he was (also, RIP Edward Hermann). What I love about GGs is that it shows how harmful both Emily AND Lorelai's parenting can be. You know what's funny? You know a complicated villain is good when even Emily's actress, Kelly Bishop, couldn't stand her lol. She once said in an interview that Emily Gilmore reminded Kelly of her grandmother and how she treated her mother... Wow...
@BryonyClaire

Luke was always reliably there, but I was pointing out he's not the "perfect" guy people think he is, when you objectively see how he acts, and importantly, reacts. I have watched many an interview of the cast, and I love Kelly's take, she relished in playing Emily as she was so unlikeable and could be incredibly mean and act the opposite to how she actually was too!

As much shit as we can give them for being NLOG girls, back in the day, if you were not like other girls, you were NOT cool. Speaking as an early 2000s awkward, nerdy homeschooled kid from Connecticut, these characters affirmed me that it was OK to be different. I think NLOG was needed for a time in history when peer pressure and judgement for being different was brutal. I think we are too hard on the characters who made us feel better about being quirky, different, and set apart from the crowd- when being this way was very judged. Sure, the NLOG character is flawed, but so is EVERY character trope. And, she served her purpose in freeing us all from the pressure of being like everyone else, and the harsh judgement of not measuring up.

I feel like this a misreading of nlog or something very surface level… I don’t think you were a nlog. Not a true one. True nlog doesn’t free you from anything. They play a role in misogyny and patriarchy. A very distressing one. Internalized misogyny, however that may play out- is not a flaw. It’s a harmful issue. Misogyny operates on many levels to hold up patriarchy. The ideas and pressure that come from men can be passed on by women. (Why are those other women having to measure up?) Nlog does not actually reject patriarchy. She feeds it in a different way. Both nlog and og are on the same cycle and living in the same environment with same influences. Knowledge, awareness, and confidence is what makes all the difference. The nlog wasn’t a female invention. Men found both attractive but wanted them to be at odds. If women don’t support, understand and respect one another, harmful men stay in power. Women can be “quirky and different”, and have characters and role models that display this without the harm. It involves rejecting patriarchy. Which is difficult even in our personal lives as our environment is built around it. Quirky and different doesn’t equal nlog. Not in the true, and dangerous sense. Women should be able to be whoever they want, and make free and accurately informed choices without judgment. The opposition of women’s personalities, appearances, lifestyles, etc.. is not freeing anybody. Being okay to be different isn’t being a nlog. You were a self aware and smart human who knew you didn’t have to “measure up” or bow to pressures. That is a wonderful thing.

I feel like Lorelai has ADHD. My Mom and I both have ADHD, and I always want to come to Lorelai's defense. Her impulsiveness; aversion to certain foods; love of sweets, coffee, and junk food (big dopamine); her silliness. It's just so relatable to me. I remember a scene where her and Rory are working the twin wedding. Lorelai sees a little girl, twirling in her dress, having fun. Then being told by an adult to sit down and not muss her dress. Bringing her down. And Lorelai says "God. I must have had a thousand dresses like that."

I like Logan because he brings the best out of rory. With dean and jess, rory was always asking them for favours (dinners, community stuff, parties). With Logan, she was always helping him and had to deal with his entitled parents, experiencing what dean and jess had to go through with her grandparents. He also called her out on her trying to separate herself from the aristocratic environment, even though she had access to the same resources (having a building in her name).

Something I never see anyone talk about is how most conflicts in Gilmore Girls are handled. It seems like a deliberate narrative choice that many of the characters come to an impasse on something, and either one of them or both makes the decision to overlook it for the sake of that relationship or to keep the peace. On your next rewatch, notice how rare it is for a disagreement between two characters to end with both acknowledging the hurt they caused and bridging that gap. It makes the conflicts feel unsettlingly realistic, as that is how these things turn out in reality. Also note that the few authentic apologies happen between the characters with the most authentic love for each other, so Lorelai and Rory whenever they make up, Lorelai with Sookie, and Lane with Mrs. Kim. Also notice all of these relationships are platonic/agape. I always found that interesting.

Dave is my favorite guy on the whole show. He is 100% my teenage dream, and I have always held a little resentment towards The OC for taking him away and leading to the disaster of Lane's later season story arc. But Logan is a close second. I love him. I love how witty and confident he is; he has an Old Hollywood style charm that I can't resist. And I don't think he gets nearly enough credit for his growth and development, and frequently gets blamed either for the behavior of people around him, or for other character's misperceptions of him. Of all Rory's love interests, he was the only one who was her true partner. He loved, admired, and respected her but never put her on a pedastal. He gave her space to figure things out for herself without judgement. He became the best version of himself with her, and inspired her to find courage and nerve. The boat thing (her idea) is a bad example of this, but it manifested in so many more positive ways too. And he was just as smart and talented as she was, so he was never intimidated by her. They were matched equals in every way. I will (grudgingly) admit that Jess grew a lot as a character over the series, but he was never that. Though just as smart, he (like Dean) always held Rory a bit in awe, and so they were never going to be able to engage on level ground. I also just hate him for a number of other reasons, but I'll leave it there. Luke is the same vis a vis Lorelai. In his case he adores her, but he doesn't fully understand her. And his emotional regulation and communication issues combined with her emotionally stunted development and pathological resistance to change do not a healthy couple make. In the end, she prefers him because he requires no growth or real compromise of her. He is content to stand still with her. I know why she is drawn to that, but I don't find it emotionally satisfying to watch.

Ummmm if we want to be accurate Dave showed some aggression toward Lane early on when he thought that she was on that date. And Logan literally treated Jess like garbage out of jealousy and cheated with Rory on his fiancé in the last episodes. So yeah…….
@shainahiggins2217
@shainahiggins2217 2 дня назад
Did I say either character was perfect? I don't need a character to be perfect to enjoy them; flawless characters are boring and unrealistic. Though I would push back on the idea that Dave was aggressive. He wasn't. He was a little irrational and certainly jealous, but all he did was run over to check in and then leave again. He didn't yell, he didn’t accuse, he didn't escalate. It was awkward and slightly intense, but a pretty believable reaction for a smitten teenager. Logan's treatment of Jess was poor, as was Jess's attitude towards Logan, as was Rory's behavior towards both of them. Everyone sucked in that scenario. But circumstantially sucking is very human. Characters should be imperfect to be interesting, dimensional, and relatable. I try not to think about the revival though, because everyone but Paris and Emily was utter garbage in that. It's like ASP was actively trying to erase any growth or development and reset them all to their worst selves.

If you aren’t familiar with what was considered “big news” recently in the US about talks of at least one of the ivies no longer taking legacies into account this past year, I highly recommend it because of what HUGE news it was as the #1 way to get into the Ivy League is to be a legacy. My mom was overly emotional, cried for hours when an old tree was cut in our town. So I emotionally shut off in order to 1) take care of her feelings and 2) not hurt her further. I tried telling my mom that I was suicidal and gay, and both ended in her crying and me having to comfort her. I had to be an adult for so long that it permanently damaged me as it was an additional layer of masking. I now know I’m autistic, aromantic, asexual, and agender, plus I’ve mentally regressed a lot due to lack of constant stress, but still.

Dave Rygalski is the superior Gilmore Girls guy. Logan was the best boyfriend for Rory at the time of their relationship. He never had her on a pedestal and treated her like an equal. She made her own decisions without him trying to persuade her or coddle her into making the decision he wanted (sometimes to her detriment). But I do think that was one of the healthiest dynamics. I just know that if Rory had been real, I would have desperately wanted to be her friend as a teen. Which is ridiculous now that i am an adult, because why would you want to be friends with sb who hates you/dunks on everything you like just so she can be a Pick me? I knew a girl just like that in Uni. No matter what i said, she had to disagree. If i said i like blue, she would say blue is bad. If i said I liked a certain artist she would say his art style is overrated. If i said i thought she was cool, she would say she didnt want to be seen as cool. I am so glad i gave up on trying to befriend her eventually.

Oh the good men always playing second to toxic relationships....lol I'm with you about Dave, I'll throw in Alex, later season's jess. As far as Lorelai, i thought Max and Jason were both pretty good but frankly her immaturity and propensity for avoidance and lying kind of brought out the worst in both relationships. Rory....the happiest i ever saw rory was frankly in the brief times she is on her own. Hear me out: in college she only really starts worrying about it when other people comment about her being alone as if its bad, and then at the end, her decision seems to her the right one, but the reboot does her dirty rehashing an addiction to yet another toxic relationship. I think had she been better adjusted, she might have ended up with later jess
@BryonyClaire
@BryonyClaire 5 дней назад
Alex was a pretty good fit - agreed! He just sort of trailed away in the show, no explanation. I feel like Jason would have prioritised his work too much, his quirks and her quirks weren't really compatible, and yes, her secretive immaturity about telling her family about them certainly would ruin anything anyway. Lorelai really needed to grow herself I get what you mean about Rory in college, I still think she and Logan made the most sense, and I like that she'd end up marrying up just like Emily did - thereby you have the cycle repeat all over again. I don't even acknowledge "A Year in the Life" in my house hahaha

Ohh, God. I am curious what your take on them is. I loved the Gilmore girls in my youth, but bring almost 40 and looking back to it, it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. The "we can eat what ever we want with having the perfect body" bs in a time where size zero and an ED epedemic was a thing, is something I always hated. With a more mature view, both of them were judgemental, self righteous "pick me" nightmare women.

Yes I agree with you about the eating / perfect body thing…. Very unrealistic!! watching this in 2024 isn’t nice because there’s so much pressure for men and women to look “perfect” that it is now viewed as negative where this was normal in the 2000s so the whole “we can 5000 calories every day without gaining weight” was what I think people in the 2000s aspired to do…. Very scary

Something that I wish was talked about more was how everyone gave Rory golden child syndrome. While I do believe that Rory is incredibly smart and ambitious, especially since she was accepted to two Ivy league schools- Being a Yale legacy did help her a, but it doesn't take away from the fact she still got accepted. Because of all the high praise and reinforcement of how special she is, that's why she took it so hard when Mitcham Huntzberger told she didn't have what it took to be a journalist. While I do agree with his assessment he could've worded it better (from what I remember, its been years since I saw the show). That's why I think she also spirals as bad and far as she does, because of all the high expectations that everyone- herself included- placed on her, whether it was knowingly or not- Lorelei. Idk, its just something I've noticed from watching reaction videos or even clips from the show. As a side note though, that Hello Kitty waffle maker is amazing and I don't blame Lorelai for loving it. I'd get one too if I ate waffles more than I do. 🐌🍁🍁🍂🍂🍄☕

Maybe it's because I'm also a weird, awkward intellectual with weird hobbies, but I was strangely Team Jason. He was one of the few options that could give as good as he got sass wise, and was also (outside of Max) one of the few characters who could keep up with Lorelei intellectually. Also, the show treated him SO horribly. Mind you, it's also been ages since I saw his seasons, so I'm probably forgetting some horrible thing he did to sour the audience on him.

Jason and Lorelai both have their quirks, however I don't think they would work as he always prioritised work which annoyed her as he did that even when they'd separated time in order to spend time together, and those quirks didn't gel well together, she's way too touchy-feely for Jason (plus she was too immature to actually be honest about their relationship)

☕️🍂 I loved gilmore girls and definitely was part of the crowd that didnt get rory in the later seasons, but looking back, yeah she was always a little selfish, but ill stand by the fact that her and jess are meant to be together lol. Yes i know its a classic goodgirl/badboy but she had so much in common with him and i love that trope. On the topic of NLOGs, i dont know if they really truly fit the definition, at least in the era they were popular in. Like yes they are smart and pretty without even trying, but i dont think their snide comments ahout other woman pretain to femininity or appealing to men, they pretain to class. They make fun of the rich upperclass that the majority of the show is putting on display. Rory's NLOGness, the hate on cheerleaders, was actually adressed by the episode, which i found actually confronted fans about their prejudice. Also your point about suki not being "competition" for lorelai is very confusing to me, as they are in totally differnt lives and dating markets. They never needed to be fighting after the same guy, and i dont think that would be better, especially in such a feminist show. In order to make a fat person not the DUFF you have to make them steal the pretty girls boyfriend??? No. I dont think suki was ever treated poorly by the show, she was beloved for a reason and not made the butt of the joke for her fatness that was common in the 00's.

The funny thing about "not like other girls" is, that in the end, we all were like this, one way or another. We all had that phase in our youth in the 90s and early 2000s, feeling the urge to hate on girly things, on pink, and glitter and flowers and all the stuff, that is considered female. Because being female back then meant being boring and dull and dumb... Now I am 39, mother of two boys and a girl all in the age range between 16 and 21 and I totally love all my Hello Kitty stuff, flowery dresses, make up and all the other girly stuff and I taught my boys that girly stuff is as good as boys stuff and try to be a better example for my girl, not to hate on her peers but to have solidarity for the "sisterhood". 20 years later, I am proud to be just like other girls/women and supporting them, no matter if they actually are like me or have different interests. We have it hard enough without constantly fighting each other. Also, you can be the cool mom and still teach your kids respect, dignity and self awareness. Also, being your kids friend is something that, as long as the kid isn´t a full grown adult, is always a one sided thing: you can be the best friend of your kid, but your kid is NOT your best friend. Go find someone your age to brag about all your problems.

Same age as Rory here, I am enjoying this but I really hate nlog discourse because I only found out I had autism and adhd at 35 and life was tough - mostly victimised by other girls/my mother. That's where a lot of these attitudes come from. Fear of women. Also Lorelai was a product of the new wave era /scene, loves the bangles, b52s etc- - and a lot of this stuff says "alternative" more than NLOG to me. There is even an exchange where we learn she rates Metallica > the Offspring - that's alternative, loud and clear (edit) also you could say Suki/Lain are not a threat or you COULD say they are fellow outsiders. Doesn't matter how attractive you are, if you have attachment issues/cptsd you might as well be living in a parallel universe ** ps if you got through late diagnosed autism without fearing most women, I salute you - you were one of the lucky ones. The rest of us have our trauma to work through and we are doing that, but people keep making videos about how bad we are and it isn't helpful
@BryonyClaire
@BryonyClaire 4 дня назад
hi! I think you may be taking the points I was raising in this video the wrong way, I in no way say that being different is bad, the NLOG issue is that Rory and Lorelai were doing things as a way to purposefully separate themselves and looked down on other girls/women - that's the issue. Like I raised with Lane, she did things as she enjoyed them or wanted to experience them, not judging others. I'm sorry you had that bad experience growing up, I've spoken many times in the past of how bullied I was, that's not what this video is about though. It's how the Gilmore Girls were representing what girls SHOULD be like, and did so as a way to shame other women and girls

Watching your video made me remember that I liked everything about he Gilmore Girls, except Lorelai and Rory. I, as a teenage kid, found Emily fascinating, adored Lane, felt bad for Luke, and thought Paris was someone to be admired. 16:29 - Yeah, I didn't understand either why this was Paris' love interest. She should have gotten someone her age that supported her in her quirks. Not a professor. When I watched that unfold for the first time on TV, I was younger than Paris, while that man was older than my dad. I didn't get it at all. Yikes. 17:09 - That's definitely a moment I despised the series for a bit. Lane had such cute boyfriends, but Zach? Come on, she truly was short changed. 17:40 - And that episode was definitely the one where I lost my regard for Rory, and gained some for Lorelai. Even more when Logan entered the scene. Yuck! 25:22 - I kinda like Lorelai with Luke because they both clearly aren't perfect, and it doesn't feel unequal in terms of one partner outshining the other, what I sort of felt with all of Lorelai's other love interests? Also, I like that Luke could say no to Lorelai.

I think Lorelei was an awesome mom because she didn't allow her parents lack of support to affect her daughter's well-being, financially took care of her daughter pretty much single-handedly, always went to bat for her kid, encouraged Rory to follow her dreams, etcetera. Lorelei was not great at every part of adulting or a perfect mom but there was never a doubt in (most) viewers' minds that she loved and cared for her child in every way a parent should. I also think Rory had wonderful qualities despite also being a very flawed person - for instance, she always did her best in school, was incredibly mature when she asked her grandparents for help paying for college and did not let her mom's bad experiences with her WASP parents stop from her doing certain things she was interested in such as "coming out".

Suki is passionate and has career direction, she is maternal and able to be in healthy relationships. She encorages her husbands familial relationships and bonding even at the expense of her own thanksgiving plans because it's not really that big of a deal. For me Lorelei was more the hero of the series than Rory. Yes, she is judgmental, bitchy and (sometimes) irresponsible. She is also a very caring mother, lonely as she only has very few friends, none of them parents. She is devoted to her job and worked to make a real home for Rory. She didn’t go into irresponsible relationships and started dating when Rory was almost an adult. With all her impulsive behaviors it must have been hard (in my headcanon she totally has ADHD with LOTS of executive problems). Rory… well, I don’t remember one thing she only did for someone else. She isn’t interested in her friends, doesn’t even pretend to be. She takes responsibility with chores but in full knowledge she will get praise for it. It’s realistic as she was very sheltered and lifted my her mother as a kid and she took Loreleis judgmental way without having worked through anything before. So she - basically- was a spoiled brat who happened to be a bookworm. I actually think that in a certain way Luke and Lorelai make sense (although I loved Max and thought Lorelei was very unfair to him). But I hate what the sequel did with them… Well, with almost everyone. Doesn’t exist,tbh. It has big parts of the storylines written for the last two seasons as Paladino said and it shows. No development in relationships or characters. Instead shameless fatphobia and toxicity. I actually liked watching it and Mrs Gilmores arc, but it was only nostalgic, nothing more. I loooove the 10th kingdom- tbh, it’s the reason I started to watch Gilmore Girls. I read the book at least five times and rewatchthe film as often as I can. Unfortunately it’s not available in Germany and I have to watch it on an old vhs on a small video-TV-combination but it’s worth it ❤

There are often characters who are flawed in media, but that's normal, because the people writing them are deeply flawed as well. So yes, it's unfortunate to show them eating great quantities of food, never work out and still remain model thin. But you have to wonder: did the author even notice that dynamic? What is their relationship with food/weight/body/diet culture? Same with the sex stuff. Did Paladino mean to write something that made sex the "bad thing" or was she reflecting the anti-sex culture at the time without passing judgment? And was it her job to pass judgment? There will never be another piece of media produced if we want everything to have a perfect message, not only for its time but one that remains perfect in the future, no matter how culture evolves.

Totally agree with everything else you voiced here, but I’m not sure the duff concept applied to this series. While Lorelei and Rory’s shared superiority complex when it came to women and their definition of “good” womanhood was evident in all their interactions with other women, I love that this show didn’t try to validate their best friends by making them compete for or attracted to the same guys as Lorelei and Rory or vice versa. I’ve always considered that a weird way to prove a female lead is worthy in any series or movie anyway, like why would they need to be attractive to the main male lead/s to be considered deserving of the lead role? Sure, we don’t see multiple guys fawning over Lane and Sooki, but they had much healthier relationships overall than their Gilmore besties. Even more importantly, we never saw their main love interests secretly pining for the Gilmores either: Jackson was all about Sooki and Dave was all about Lane, so no one was a romantic threat to anyone else. Plus, none of Lorelei’s or Rory’s love interests would even make it on a rank of best guys to date, they were all kinda terrible except Max, so I don’t even consider Lorelei and Luke’s ending a happy one. The exception to this may be the Paris/Tristan/Rory triangle, but no one in that triangle was ever actually in a romantic relationship, so it barely counts in my book, especially since Paris was the only one to achieve a true happy ending relationship-wise imo

I watched the first two seasons as a teenager but I kind of disliked it to much after that. I didn’t like the mom that much. Also because I’m black and I found it super annoying that their were never any black characters.

Oh the whiteness of everything is soooo bad! Hence me saying that in the beginning, it's a very privileged white bubble of a fake town

I feel so bad for Lane, along with her not enjoying her first time and getting pregnant with twins, it was with a douchey immature guy who was her rebound after the better guy left, and on top of all of that she had an abusive upbringing.

I feel like the writers were always punishing Lane for no reason. Lane had sex while married but it was awful and she got pregnant on the first time.

@@l.n.3372Exactly it reminds me of how they treat "Meg Griffin" on "Family Guy".
