I would go with the gimbal for outdoors and filming indoors where I really don't need to change the camera lens. Handheld would be at weddings and parties where I may need to change the lens or zoom in on someone without having to recalibrate the gimbal which can be a pain in the butt.

That's totally fair, there's definitely a lot of situations where each of them shine

Thanks for the video, Remy. I have a gimbal. It's a Weebill S and, for the price, it's impossible to criticise. When following someone it is optimum. It's heavy with the stuff bolted to it, and I went with MFT because I have a back problem and needed gear as light as possible. I was aware of the weight when I bought it, so there is only one aspect I can criticise. I have a small shotgun mic. I use it in preference to the in-camera one when there's a wind above flat calm. If I put it on the gimbal it fouls the arms. I've tried various work-arounds with various degrees of success. I thought I'd give a cage a try. As I have three different sizes of camera, I opted for a Camvate universal rig, a second-hand one which was accurately described as unused. It can take my shot gun mic, my mobile phone which I use as a monitor, and anything else I wish to attach to it. I have a handle one side, and the camera the other. After some agitated video initially I have been able to produce footage that, with the stabilising feature of my software, Resolve, is pretty good. I can still tell the difference between gimbal and cage-based video but the difference reduces as I become more experienced with the cage. The one thing I will warn against is adding useless junk to cage. I think a gimbal is very useful for certain situations, like a follow, and is particularly useful for someone new to quality video work. I built up my cage over 18 months and it felt far cheaper than the one-off charge for the gimbal, although, as I have just calculated, the cage is about two thirds the price. Whether I look more professional with the cage is a moot point, but I have noticed bystanders are more inclined to step in front of the shot if I'm using the gimbal. That makes me wish the shotgun mic more nearly reflected its name.

Totally fair point

Comparison at 4:07 - honestly the handheld shots are chaotic and only useful for situations where you want to show sudden chaotic energy. Gimbal running shot shows action without giving the impression of uncontrolled energy. So it's a creative decision. A shot of a little girl in a white frock running in a field using her young energy, use a gimbal. Same girl same field but she is being chased by a chainsaw killer - use handheld.

I completely agree. I actually posted a short about this very topic and said very similar things

I've been on the fence about this for a little while now. I've always been drawn to the look and simplicity of using a handheld set up but I have really unstable hands personally, so gimbals always felt like the solution.. after a little test with a gimbal at the shop, it just feels like for my shooting purposes building a hand held set up will be more efficient.
@itmeremy
@itmeremy 7 дней назад
@ChinaUndiscovered that makes sense. Using a gimbal is also it's own skill, and of course has it's own look. I don't like setting up gimbals and I much prefer using a handheld rig over gimbals as well. As long as you can handle the weight, a solid handheld rig I think is much more versatile too

@@itmeremy generally speaking the weight isn't a major issue. though after long hours, I could see how it is inconvenient. would you still say handheld rigs provide a decent amount of stabilization? natural movement and such is fine but I certainly don't want every shot to look like a chase scene in a horror film.
@itmeremy
@itmeremy 7 дней назад
@ChinaUndiscovered yeah it definitely does make a difference. A heavier rig will have way less of the little shakes that a super light rig will have. Plus there's other ways to add more stability if needed. Actually, one of my most recent videos is on that topic, maybe go check that out, it might help more than whatever I can say here. Here's a link to it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-43p9j5rnm2M.html

I have built four rigs. One of them for my Iphone as well. I love building rigs and I use them when I'm doing cooking content and filming independent pro wrestling.

I think they both definitely have their own jobs/reasons for use. Neither one of them is better or worse. Thanks for this video talking about both of them 🙂 *I'm a complete beginner to video making and recently am learning about cameras, gimbals and all of that

In my case, i have parkinson , my sony a7c was unusable in videos. In photo it’s ok as i can always increase the shutter speed. So i just bought a Weebill 3s and my videos are fantastic now. You can always inject some camera movement in post (as special effects, like war field or some special shake to match an specific actions). The gimbal save my camera, or i think i would have sell my entire kit. The different mode allow different movements. And it is not like if it is on tripod for static scene. Go and Pov mode are very dynamic. And the other mode look very professional. Gimbal is great.

That's totally fair. That's one situation where a gimbal is a great tool, especially if it takes your camera from being unusable

I prefer handheld and shoulder rigs all the time but gimbals are fun and fast when you don't need to manually focus on the image

True, I'm not a fan of balancing gimbals though, I'd much rather build a rig
