I will keep this comment minimal in tone and in a low key: watched. enjoyed. enjoyed. watched. enjoyed. repeat.

Love your line: “as minimalism evolved” it sounds so counterintuitive that something minimal can evolve and still remain minimal, but it makes sense hah. I had no idea that Reich and Glass were at odds with each other. Someone, might have been you, showed Nachthorn before and have been meaning to check it out. Lovely selection of records overall.

Nachthorn is indeed a delightful record. I don't really know what I'm talking about when it comes to minimalism 😂

Fred, a great topic. I am comforted that even though I did not actively seek out minimalism I seemed to have arrived at the same point. The five add-on albums are another story, as I may have not have heard any of them, maybe Midori Takada. Some of the artists on the Lovely Music label bight be considered part of the minimalist community. Thanks, Chris

Thanks Chris, I am only talking staples here, maybe to help newcomers, not people such as yourself with a deep musical culture. I need to check the Lovely Music label.

There's a Philip Glass piece called Music From The Screens that is lesser known but fantastic. Less minimal maybe. That Floating Points record is stunning

Fred, I want to add some perfume to your excellent love letter. French poet, Rene Char's maxim, ''Each Act Is Virgin, Even The Repeated Ones'' applies to Minimalism, and is of course, a scientific truth and a great way to think about Life, itself. Ravel's ''Bolero'' is a perfect starting point to begin the framework of the Minimalist Movement. That piece always sounded Arabic, to me. The interaction between the Spanish and Arabic cultures, might prove me right, on this observation. Steve Reich was influenced by the hand-clapping of a Flamenco group that he saw after one of his concerts. He wrote the piece ''Clapping Music'', which is a favorite of mine, along with '' Music For Pieces Of Wood''. Mike Oldfield 's ''Tubular Bells'' sounds like a distant cousin of Terry Riley's '' In C''
@bigstar1000
@bigstar1000 2 месяца назад
I never thought of it myself but you're right, Oldfield is a sort of a more mainstream minimalist. Even on pieces like Ommadawn he uses patterns that repeat. Spot on. And yes Bolero is quite clearly Spanish inflluenced.

Solid overview of the style..like you said you can only do so much in a limited time and format..i have not heard that ravel piece in a long time and never thought about the link.. Ravel satie and debussy all i think touched on something early that evolved into these sounds. I always go even further back to gamelan music and african drumming..which you already know..also as you bring up indian music. Like alot of music i like this style also is highly immersive and evolving into a endless journey deeper into the soundpool and i never care if i drown.. Not much more to say solid selections for one to explore if there not familiar..plus some lesser known modern ones.. Your on a great role with these latest gimmie ten.. Much love chris

Hey Chris, I am still to watch your latest video which I have in my 'to watch' list and mean to do so. I am always grateful to see you in the comments section. I agree with your take on Gamelan and African drumming. Those are absolutely influences. Debussy changed his approach listening to Gamelan so it must have had an effect on Steve Reich and Philip Glass at the very least.

So much noise and distractions in the world today. I hear tons of arvo part on radio 3. Terry Riley's big forehead! Thanks for sharing. My mum has Bolero on 7" so i listened to as a child then had to turn over halfway through which was a bit odd. Think I get ambient and minimalist mixed up a tad.Hope you are having a lovely summer there.

Ambient is a form of minimalism if that helps unmix those in your head. How is England gonna fare against the Swiss? Interesting...
@Thevinylscavenger
@Thevinylscavenger 2 месяца назад
@@bigstar1000 i think it's a potential shock not because England are so poor but The Swiss are looking very united and together. For us it'll depend too on can Xhaka not loose his head because of his edginess he's liable to get sent off. Could go to penalties. I'm half Spanish so I have pre made back up plan. How about France?

As usual, you've done a strong job of showcasing the hallmarks of the genre. These are pretty much all must haves for me. You could also throw in Pascal Comelade or Fluence or Roberto Musci who also utilize other sounds but minimalism is definitely part of their approach. Always love a Gimme Ten!
@bigstar1000

Roberto Musci and Fluence absolutely. As I said, it's a genre that pervaded through many other styles and is to be found all around the musical map.

Hey Fred, Wonderful personal take on an approach to music that's among my personal favorites too. Most of the core of what you showed, plus Terry, Harold, Arvo have been among my favorite artists, albums overall for decades. Yes, feel especially similar on Alina. It tints the air beautifully. Arvo's an artist I've planned on doing a video on for years...must just get to it finally. 🙂Wow, I thought those were mutant panpipes on the last record! Am intrigued by all of those. Thanks for sharing as always. -Carm

All great albums. One could argue that minimalism was partly a sort of response to (for me) the sterile serialism of much of post war modern classical music. Music that was technically and conceptually brilliant but very hard to listen to for an extended period. If you don't know it could I recommend Poiemusia Lá Nau Dels Argonautes by Pep Llopis former member of the Spanish Prog band Coto En Pel. Its mix of minimalism, electronics, folk melodies, and chanted Catalan poetry is pure beauty in motion.

I just discovered your channel recently and I'm really enjoying the videos. Have you ever done one on the disciples of the minimalists (i.e., those heavily influenced by the Mount Rushmore and incorporating minimalism in slightly more mainstream music)? It would be great to hear your take on favorites in your collection. I've been getting into John Cale recently and really love Church of Anthrax with Terry Riley. I know Cale spent time with La Monte Young and the Theatre of Eternal Music among others and obviously brought his minimalist influence to the Velvet Underground.
