In this GIMP 2.10.4 tutorial, I show you how to create something I call "Photographic Typography," or text that is comprised of an element of a photo (in this case a hummingbird for the letter "H"). This cool effect uses the text tool, layer masks, and the colorize effect to create the final composition.
This is a great graphic design tutorial for beginners. It is the 2nd of 5 tutorials being released as part of our 20,000 Subscribers Celebration!

Very good tutorial. Can you make a video about create a design for tattoo with specifications about pixels and how to Setup the printer. I'm a little confused about is the setup at the beginning of the create a new art. I don't know if the image should be vertical or horizontal. Because for printing should be vertical. Thanks in advance

Thanks for sharing. I've just been introduced to this wonderful tool and have recently installed it on my laptop. My question is, why my tools buttons grey and not as colourful as yours?

Great as always! Thank you!Just a question: What's the purpose of setting the resolution to 72dpi for the web? Screens just show the pixels and don't care about the print resolution, afaik. Also modern monitors or mobile devices have higher resolutions, my 4k monitor at work is above 100ppi. Am I missing something? I never had issues with my web graphics and never cared about the dpi.

Essentially it boils down to whether or not you are uploading your work to a website. There is no real visible/noticeable difference between 72 ppi and 300 ppi when viewing something on a computer monitor, but the size savings is significant when saving the file as 72 vs 300 ppi. This is preferred in web design because smaller page sizes mean faster load times for web pages that have photos. Faster load times are good for optimizing your site for search engines like Google. With print, on the other hand, you want higher resolutions as the difference will be much more noticeable when you print something onto tangible media (i.e. paper).

Thank you for your answer. Please correct me, if I'm wrong. I think the 72dpi might be obsolete at all. It origins from the actual screen resolutions in the nineties, I think. If dpi and screen resolution match, the printed version of your web graphic would match the size when it's shown on a screen. Today, I think it's not helpful anymore (if it ever was), unless you use the actual ppi of the screen you're working with. The dpi is just a print setting, isn't it? The file size is determined by the actual number of pixels. Sorry if I misinterpreted your answer. I think you have noticed that English is not my native language.

Michael good tutorial but I do not understand why you brought the original pic back in and then put it inside the letter H.

This is so that there is a seamless transition from the main object (the hummingbird) and the lettering. It's not quite as necessary for this particular composition because the background ends up basically showing up as a solid color, but for other photos where there is perhaps a more complicated background this technique comes in handy.

Hmm... feathered edges on a bird. How appropriate! Then drag it to the new image and hover! Stop it, you're killing me!
