My personal opinion. Logos by Nicks is the best RU-vid guide I've ever seen. From beginner to pro and now I can purchase my edited images and logos. In the past, I thought GIMP was free so it had very little functionality, and Inkscape is. After searching on RU-vid and seeing you, I completely changed my mind. Thank you! Logos by Nick!

Hi Nick. Thanks for a great tutorial. In fact all your tutorials are great. I'm wondering if you can help me further. I'm looking to cut out a specific shape. Say a heart shape or a pine apple shape for instance. Using different backgrounds not just gold. Do you happen to have a tutorial on this on how to create this type of template first and then how to use it to create cutouts? Many thanks.

Great tutorial. The finished product looks great! But, I have a question. How often do you actually NEED to use a bitmap graphics program in your own work flow? I enjoy creating stuff in Inkscape. But Gimp, not so much. LOL I would like to start doing some freelance design work, but I have a hard time staying interested in manipulating photos. Would it be feasible for me to stay in the SVG realm, or is bitmap manipulation fairly mandatory?

It would be possible to work exclusively with vectors, but it would be a little more difficult. You could focus primarily on designing logos, which do not require photo manipulation, but you'd be limiting yourself because a lot of the people who hire you for logo design will also want to hire you to design business cards and the like. So you'd be leaving a lot of business on the table. Then there's always stuff like app and game graphics, GUI, buttons, sliders, icons, etc. You could market yourself as a specialist in that niche perhaps. That certainly wouldn't require photo manipulation.

Just some advice, but when you held Ctrl to size the image, it actually made it size unproportional, just dragging it would work

Actually the psd can be opened by Krita. It's free like gimp and while it's not quite the same as gimp it has better psd support.

Nick, nice work! Can you say me how can i export an image from Gimp to .png with a transparency background?

Your final image in Gimp should already have a negative or no background. Export the image to .png, and that's it. When viewing this image using normal/usual apps, it may seem like it has a white background, sometimes the image will have inverted colors. But if you open it again in apps like Gimp, you'll see that the background is, indeed, transparent.

Save as a .png. if you have background you need to get rid of it. Hope that helps!

how do you to make the background of your logo become transparent?

1. Add a new layer. Once the dialog box appears, set it to 'transparent'. 2. Put the layer under the layer where your logo is at. 3. Remove your logo's background. You can do this by using the certain selection tools---like the wand tool, then press delete. (That is, if your logo has clean lines. It takes more time and patience to remove the bg if not.) note: Not sure if steps 1 and 2 are necessary, but I do them. :))

I'm having some issues. I'm using GIMP 2.10.18. I have pasted the gold foil logo, done "alpha to selection" and set the mode to "dodge", when I try to add the drop shadow, nothing shows up and it does not create a layer for the drop shadow in the layers list. Fresh install of GIMP and same issue. EDIT: I tried using drop shadow (legacy) and it worked fine, not sure what the issue is but in case anyone else has the same issue, use legacy drop shadow instead.
