They are great live. Album of my youth, but never had watched the band perform ever. Very impressive

Watching/hearing them play the whole album is like coming home in my mind, the early 90s, maybe my favorite job, "New Miserable Experience" formed a good soundtrack. I'm glad the band, and Robin, offered a toast to John Hampton, and two for Doug Hopkins. May his songs live forever.

I saw them live 6 times in the 90s in the Phoenix area. NME is one of the best albums of all time. Pieces of the Night is one of the best songs ever written.

one of the most under rated bands of the 90's but maybe they were so far ahead of their time because they are more popular now ...most 90's bands are history

The GBs rock. Doug Hopkins was a premier songwriter-guitarist. Lost Horizons is their best song. "The Lost Horizons I can see are filled with bars and factories and in them we all fight to stay awake." Reminiscent of Jackson Browne in its glory.

I really like them, but I never saw them as far ahead. On the contrary, I saw them as a throw-back to straight-ahead melodic rock n roll, much like The Byrds in their sound. Good story-telling songs, jangly guitars and nice harmonies.

Good to hear some of the less played tracks live (Pieces of the Night, Cheatin etc.). This was an amazing album. One of those few records where you don’t really need to skip tracks. I always wonder what could’ve happened if Doug cleaned his act up and beat his addiction.

I'm glad Robin is giving Doug some props. The royalty thing was BS, and I'm sure they know that now. The guys are talented in their own right, but Doug's songs are timeless. Every time I listen to NME I thank Doug for those songs. One of my favorite albums of the 90's easily. NME, Core by STP, and Matthew Good Band's Beautiful Midnight are my three favorites from the 90's. RIP Doug Hopkins.
@cejannuzi

They did what the label demanded. They certainly didn't strip all royalties from him, otherwise his estate wouldn't be worth 12 million dollars. Robin even said at the time that they were just making it big that they owed so much to Doug. Doug was a self-destructive fuck-up who couldn't see past his self-destructive fucked-up life.

Doug Hopkins stands among Bob Mould, Grant Hart, Mike Stipe, Prince and Paul Westerberg as the finest songwriters of their generation. We are tweeners not boomers, born c. 1958 to 1964. The wh(Y) generation. Add David Pirner, Matthew Sweet, Dean Wareham, and Susanna Hoffs. Okay we are all geezers now in any case.
