I’m seventy one years old and as a scout in my youth we sat around the campfire and sang this song, brings a tear to my eye, not sure if it’s the fire smoke or the distant memories of a young boy growing up.

I'm 27 yrs searching for this song finally got mesmerising my childhood days.

I'm sixty seven years old and this song brings tears to my eyes everytime i listen to it!! The lyricism really hits the spot! I love African Songs they really are so amazing!! When i die this needs to be at my funeral!

This song suddenly came into my head this evening and I decided to look it up. Was absolutely amazed to find it on RU-vid! I learnt it when I was a Girl Guide way back in the 1950s but knew nothing of its history. What a serendipitous evening!

My class at school in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 in the 1960’s always sat in a circle during dinner break and sang songs. This was one of our favourites.

My older cousin (in his early 30s) heard the mainstream "Baby Shark" for the first time today, I introduced him to the old cub scout version and he was astonished that it was so old. After that, I went down a rabbit hole full of old memories of camp songs, dredging up songs I'd all but forgotten, but still remembered the tune to. Thus, I am here, mentally reliving my days as a Beaver/ Cub scout in the late 90s. ❤ What halcyon days those were!

It has been fascinating to listen to this song again. This is the first time I have seen the words in print. The last time I heard it (in the mid1950s) was around campfires in Colombo, Ceylon (now known as Sri Lanka). I was a Wolf Cub in the troop of Royal Primary School (Master-in-Charge, Vernon Halpe) in the 1940s and a Scout in the Royal College Troop (Master-in-Charge, Mr Cantlay) in the early 1950s. A notable day in my career as a Wolf Cub was when I (together with Dudley Halpe and Priya Amerasinghe) became the first in the country to qualify for the 'Leaping Wolf Badge'.

This song was always sung as a lullaby in my family. Its been a tradition passed down in our family. Actually today my bus driver's nearly 1 year old grandson was on the bus and he was crying so I sang this a bit slower and softer and he fell asleep holding on to my finger :)

The first time that I sang this boy scout song (I was 14 years old)... it was in a firecamp in San Rafael - Segovia - SPAIN, celebrated in the summer of 1954. But the lyrics were not exactly the originals one. We sang "Chin" instead "Gin" and we repeated Sheyla (instead of Heyla and Sheyla) finishing the refrain with Goolie, Goolie, Goolie, Goolie, Goo... Vakoom (instead of Oompah) for the bass voice...
