Dinah Shore and Ginger Rogers have some light-hearted banter before Ginger goes into a singing-and-dancing production number called "New Fangled Tango"
I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Ginger Rogers several decades ago. She was totally charming. I was with her about 20 minutes & while leading her through an airport & I told the famous dancer I couldn’t wait to tell my friends I had been with Ginger Rogers & I lead. She laughed & when we parted she winked & said, “Don’t forget….you lead”. Today I’m the proud owner of a pair of cufflinks that were once hers.
What a memory! And My dream!!! You’re so lucky and it’s so nice to hear that she was an Angel in person as illuminates on the screen! Thank you for sharing
Wow! Ginger Rogers rescued a song from HAPPY HUNTING! I wonder if Merman happened to catch Rogers version of this song from not-her-favorite musical. Those lifts are incredible - and I think Ginger is singing live! Talk about beautiful!
Oh my goodness, how did this get past the censors? Ginger is beautiful in that gown, look at her tiny waist! I'm not sure I understand the reference to falling asleep and Perry Como.
Bad? TV in those days was never that good, and since then it's risen to a new low. Former FCC Commissioner Newton Minnow was right when he described the whole thing as 'a vast wasteland'. I remember TV in the late 1940's, and it was a lost cause even then. And don't get me started on what Hollywood movies have turned into.
"Painfully"...your opinion. In 1958 TV was competing with Hollywood, and the expectations of audiences for entertainment was different than today. Today (2023) dancing is overdemanding acrobatics, singing/songs express morbid selfish primal verse, visuals border on inappropriate nudity, and condescending humor at the expense of others. I'd say this vintage TV presentation was... enjoyable compared to today w/out offending anyone (other than anyone that would wish they could fit into that dress Ginger wears).
@@501rivet I was born in 1939 and saw all this crap in person on a tiny Sentinel TV from Sears. You are very sadly misinformed if you think crap in 1958 was somehow immune from crapiness. The chairman of the FCC called all of TV a "vast wasteland" in the late 1950s, and it got steadily worse. Today pretty much all of TV is unwatchable.
@@rocketsroar1 You are one opinion, which is ok, for you. Hope you "feel better" expressing it even though others may/will disagree... like me. I don't determine entertainment value w/the FCC expressing their contrary view, as my to be accepted view. Art is not determined by information but rather interpretation. Entertainment is a slice of art as its created as an expression. Art definition can still be morphed into accepting "bad art"...socially, or physically in its general definition. Its the details that complicate things. What you like others may find as "crap". Lighten up. Prior to 1980, in a general sense, living/life was not as stressful as 2023, though even that statement can be debated. Exertainment was made to be a "feel good" moment, not expressing controversy, as 2023 does. This tango was complicated and masterful to create and manage. From an era perspective it was visually fun, Rodgers is an icon, and I myself would not want to act out this performance. Its good entertainment...not "crap'. My one, but also a more generally accepted review.
