About this piece:
Having completed thirty-eight stage works Rossini moved to Paris in 1824. There he continued to reign as the
greatest living opera composer and agreed to undertake a major commission from the Paris Opèra. Huge excitement
was engendered and society vied to obtain tickets for the première of "William Tell", based on Schiller's drama, on
August 3rd, 1829. Although it was well received and achieved 500 performances during the composer's lifetime,
the work eventually vanished: no wonder when it is realised that the complete score is over four hours long and it
requires a large cast of first-rate singers.
Its much-loved Overture is a little tone poem in four sections, summarising the whole story of the legendary
Swiss patriot. It opens with a most imaginative sequence, originally for five solo cellos, a rare inspiration, followed by a
splendid storm. In the ensuing peace, Rossini introduces a folksy country song he uses extensively in the opera. A
fanfare heralds the arrival of the Swiss army and the famous galloping march brings this unusually well-constructed
overture to a lively finish.
