Some people say that Giordano Bruno thought you could know, understand, remember and direct all knowledge in this world.
Literally all of it!
Well... I interpret the great memory master rather differently. In this video, I discuss the "artificial intelligence" of the Memory Wheel Technique when used in combination with the Memory Palace.
When your definition of "everything" is correct and accords with the true information of information, perhaps you've got a shot.
But it's not necessary. There are better options and I explain the most important mnemonic encoding tool I've found in his books.
Learn to use it well and your practice with memory techniques will explode.

Indeed, this realization is useful to contemplate. I wonder what Bruno would think of our current findings, such as Zipf's law and so forth... I would like to imagine that he would see it as an excellent shield against ever getting overwhelmed by the Hydra Effects of info ever again.

One thing that I did not understood about memory wheels with more than one layer: Is the information in each "house" of each layer the same? Ex: If _A layer 2_ is "memory" will every _layer 1_ combination with _A layer 2_ be always "something_layer1"+"memory"? (I wanted to make it so AB and CB have different data for B but I am not having that great results and I think it is because I'm truly trying to reinvent the wheel 😅)

Ultimately, it’s up to each person to work out exactly how to use the techniques. I don’t layer them myself, or at least that’s not how I would describe how I use them. 🙏

Logic applied to the cross fertilization of ideas, causes thesis, antithesis, which leads to synthesis. Synthesis is when epiphanies are curated in the individual. Epiphanies are the true sign of learning. To increase the qualitative and quantitative aspects of your epiphanies, study many seemingly unrelated things at once.

1) Lay people in the "art of memory" always confuse the "operations used in the art of memory" with the "art of memory itself". Which is the same as confusing elementary mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, division and multiplication with mathematics. Mathematics is much broader than that. And Ars Memoriae too. The "main problem" that Bruno's combinatorial wheels help solve is "image production". Older systems used "random images" in their alphabets: the number 2 looks like a swan, the letter A looks like a compass, the letter D looks like a bow, etc. And the problem was that, as the number of symbols increased, the more difficult it was to create new images that were not confused with the previous ones. With the wheels, Bruno developed a more systematic way to produce infinite images. The second "main problem" that Bruno's combinatorial wheels solve is the "production of places (locis)". Older systems used "real places" (churches, libraries, etc) as memory palaces. Peter of Ravenna, for example, claimed that he could have more than 100,000 places (or environments). And every time he visited a new city he never stopped building new places for his memory. Bruno's system DOES NOT USE these "memory palaces". Because the very arrangement of images has the power to produce infinite places. A third "benefit" is that of "systematic repetition." Learning requires repetition. However, the person who most highlighted this benefit of the wheels was Ramon Llull - who received this inspirations from Sufi astrologers/alchemists. --- 2) The "Ramists" were not entirely wrong in their criticism of the popular and widespread use of the "mnemonic techniques". Because one thing is knowledge/understanding, another is wisdom/comprehension. Simply repeat a bunch of information, an Phonograph can do that. As Bruno never tires of repeating, the "art of memory" has several other uses. It's not just for repeating information. It also serves other things that, following Bruno's example, I won't even mention - because I've already learned that they really are pearls before swine. What I can mention is that it also serves to produce new information. We can say that a "high-level" "memory art system" can function like a Kabbalah. It doesn't just help you memorize. But it also helps you to reason better, speak better, debate better, teach better, etc. It's like "mental software". There is "mental software" that is barely useful for carrying out elementary mathematical operations. And there is "mental software" that is much more sophisticated - And even more so in the hands of savants/neurodivergents, like Giordano Bruno and Peter of Ravenna. Because it's not just a question of "software" and "techniques". Although everyone has a brain (Or PC 286 and full of viruses/trojans), many don't even have the "hardware" to be as good as them at this. But we can always improve.

Bruno also teaches a standard model of the Memory Palace - and other variations.
@gurigraphics
@gurigraphics 3 месяца назад
It can be called a "Memory Palace" depending on your conception of a memory palace. However, the "Sigillus, Sellos, etc" do not function as conventional "memory palaces". In "Sigillus, Sellos, etc" the "connections" are much more "rhizomatic", precisely like "neurons", where one association helps to remember another. What doesn't happen in "palaces", the "connections" are much more "linear" - at most they use floors and pile people on top of each other, in a largely improvised and random way, without very well-defined criteria. The "Sigillus, Sellos, etc" are also not reproductions of real places. Bruno even comments that his system does not have this limitation of depending on real places, and that, therefore, more people would be able to use the system. In this same passage Bruno comments that this is why his method surpasses the previous ones. Furthermore, as I mentioned above, Bruno's interest was not just for memorizing sequences of words. The "Sigillus, Sellos, etc" are effective for memorizing abstract concepts, mathematical concepts, emotional experiences, promoting creativity, intuition, self-knowledge, and other things that it is possible to understand better by studying Jung than Bruno. This "other level" of "level design" of the "art of memory" begins with the following foundation: images, symbols, archetypes, etc., are not mere linguistics: signs, signifiers and meanings, chosen randomly on the basis of improvisation. But, beginners can really start from the beginning: an Aquamen, holding Batman's hand, holding Cyclops' hand... hehe They can even become memory champions by training just that. It all depends on each person's interest. The more sophisticated the system, the greater the need to learn from the masters, and little the probability to rediscover "the wheels" on your own. It is possible to argue that this "other level" that I highlight is no longer a "memory system", but a "magic system" or so on. For me, this "Jnana Yoga" stays the same. What changes are only the images, organization, use, purpose, etc. Something that, neither Bruno, nor Bruno's scholars knew how to explain nor the basics.
@AnthonyMetivierMMM
@AnthonyMetivierMMM 3 месяца назад
If you know how to explain it and use it, why aren't you making a channel devoted to it and constantly demonstrating achievements with this understanding of one speculative aspect of Bruno's approach?
@gurigraphics
@gurigraphics 3 месяца назад
I have several "excuses". After my channel stopped being monetized I got discouraged from RU-vid. Nowadays it is even more difficult to get many views on these "cult niches". And even much so if you produce this content in Portuguese. I'm not sure if this is my "best skill" or best way to spend my time. Nor much confidence that I would become a reasonable master of it. It is difficult to have time to do everything we would like or could do. And for me it's even harder to dedicate yourself to something specific. It's been a while since I studied the art of memory. Today my interest is more focused on technology and exact sciences. But who knows, maybe one day I'll need to return to this to "connect the dots".

hey @AnthonyMetivierMMM i am a medical student, how long will it take me to memorize lets just say 50 pages. I asked because the reason why I have known the memory wheels for a long time but have never practiced this technique is cause a semester can be so fast pace that you can't use slow methods.
@AnthonyMetivierMMM
@AnthonyMetivierMMM 3 месяца назад
The answer depends on your understanding and skill with the technique - and your willingness to experiment with it. I’d suggest using it so that you might become faster, and as fast as possible. But use it for the sheer joy and effectiveness of using the technique, not for the certainty of how long this or that amount might take. Some units of info will always take longer than others and exactly how long is tested, not predicted. Does this way of looking at things make sense and help you out?
