I don't know what it is about Zanacanaro, but there is a pathos, tenderness and vulnerability in his singing that just rips the rest to shreds when he is on his game.
Superb voice. I am sorry that I could not watch him on stage. One of the greatest baritones that I have ever heard. He belong with the best of the best.
Yes, it's a pity that this clip doesn't include the cabaletta because in Zancanaro's hands it's a breathtaking demonstration of how emotionally devastating bel canto can be.

I am also a fun of Zancanaro. There is a wonderful record of the Andrea Chenier ( U. Giordano ) with Eva Marton, Jose Carreras and Giorgio Zancanaro ( 1987 ) I recommend to listen it. :)
This is how a man should sing. He lays bare his very soul and demonstrates such beauty and sensitivity without faking a false sense of femininity. All men who sing or desire to sing should listen to Giorgio as often as possible and follow his path.
Heard him live in Ballo years ago. Gorgeous voice, Compelling musicality, thrilling temperament, and a totally satisfying performance. So many great Baritones, and GZ is right up there.
It seems rather odd to describe a baritone as possessing a ravishingly beautiful voice, but that expression could easily be applied to Giorgio Zancanaro.

I heard him live in this role. A uniquely beautiful voice. He didn't have the top under complete control when I heard him. This was also true for several other famous baritones early in their careers. Chernov is another example.

First: Zancanaro is my favorite on this aria. So clean, so direct, the voice is flying! Second: Does anybody know why there are some bars cut towards the end? (In my score he cuts from the section marked “with abandon” directly to the end? Is this just a quirk of this production?
GZ's is the most hauntingly beautiful baritone voice I've ever heard. I only had to hear one aria for him to dethrone Yuri Mazurok as my favorite baritone for over 30 years. I've often wondered why a singer of his caliber sang only seven performances at the Met in 1982. A Google Search revealed that the New York Times completely ignored his debut in Ballo, and I couldn't believe my eyes reading Donal Henahan on his Conte di Luna: "A robust though undistinguished voice that in other circumstances might be used to communicate something" and "an unimaginative, hasty sketch rather than a believable character." No wonder he never set foot in Lincoln Center again.
Zancanaro did not like to fly, he had inner ear problems that were supposedly aggravated by flying, and he had plenty of work in Europe. He did have other dates at the Met scheduled at some point, but did not perform ostensibly because of the ear problem; but, some thought that he, like other singers of that era, were just trying to get out of their Met bookings (because frankly the European houses paid much better than the Met at that time).
@@eedgerton769 Around that same time, I asked a friend who worked at the Met why so many European singers would come for one season, get great reviews, and never return. He told me the tax situation had a lot to do with it, but what they really hated was being away from home and family for six weeks or longer for a handful of performances and little opportunity for anything else. US audiences don't got to recitals unless it's a big star's. And with so many great opera houses only an hour or so away by plane, there was always the chance that Hamburg or Paris might need someone in their Fach on short notice and they could be there that night. No wonder they'd rather stay in Vienna or Munich.

While he had his own unique quirks and faults, I don't even know how you can listen to him and then not go back and find some degree of fault with many other singers' fraseggio, breath control, tone equality, etc. He has "ruined" some other highly regarded and more famous singers, for me. He makes some of them simply sound overburdened or (less charitably) lazy.

Mah, alcune volte mi chiedo se gli appassionati di lirica abbiano oltre alle orecchie anche la capacità di udire, abbiano capacità critica, cultura uditiva nel senso che abbiano realmente ascoltato più cantanti, più interpretazioni, capiscano differenze e soprattutto abbiano quell'obiettività di ascolto che permetta veramente di distinguere il vero valore di un artista e la superiorità dell'uno su l'altro. Beh, purtroppo visto i commenti di meraviglia rispetto alla mediocrità assoluta di questa voce, debbo affermare....... Purtroppo no.
