Giovanni viene da Bernalda e sua moglie Vera da Banzi, ma vivono e lavorano a Bari. Un giorno dall'azienda di Vera arriva un'offerta: trasferirsi a New York per un periodo di tempo indefinito, forse un anno, forse di più. Lei accetta. Giovanni, pur sostenendo la sua scelta, non pensa di seguirla: hanno appena comprato casa a Bernalda e sono in corso i lavori di ristrutturazione. La prospettiva di un cambiamento così radicale non è nei suoi programmi, ma le circostanze e un pizzico di spirito d'avventura gli fanno cambiare idea. È l'inizio della sua nuova vita, della loro nuova vita.
