Adrienne made a good point. The definition of "wife material" has changed over time.
@janedough6410
@janedough6410 6 лет назад
I think the traditional definition is the same. However the term is relative per individual. As men grow up not witnessing traditional representation, their idea of "wife" changes -- aesthetics over qualities.

@@janedough6410 that's def not true many men grew up seeing traditional settings and still rather a woman that contributes more than staying home and cooking which is great but doesnt work in our world. Back before the 60s women could be home makers and live off their husbands salary. I'd love to stay home with my kids instead of having them thrown in daycare and I love to cook and was raised to know cleanliness is next to Godliness. BUT we could never survive off my husbands salary and most families couldnt survive off the husbands salary. Most men especially in my generation with a middle wage income that wants children is going to choose a woman that works hard and beings in money as being wifey material hands down. My grandma finds that crazy and has always told us paying half the Bill's isnt for wives it's for roommates but shes from a different generation. That isnt working in ours. Time and time again the couples I see where the woman insists the man takes care of her ends up cheated on and left unless her man is making 6 figures because men rather a woman paying half the Bill's so they can live comfortably, go out and enjoy each other than having no money paying all the Bill's on his income and being stuck home every day off
@janedough6410
@janedough6410 6 лет назад
Possibly too literal. The term "wifey material" in this context are young ladies that possess qualities for an ideal wife. Most guys inquire when they're serious and have their life in order. Finances is not a factor. Young ladies get this title while in school, and it doesn't mean to be a housewife. RE: Grandma - She's right IMO. When you're married tabs shouldn't be "half" because it's combined incomes. One or the other pays. Half is for an acquaintance. Some of us pay full tabs for friends. Your spouse take hierarchy.

@@cecemac988 idk what you are talking about but idc who I'm married to, they better have a source of income cause nowadays, its so expensive to just live. The stereotypical stuff is ridiculous like fixing a car, opening the door, paying for dates, etc. However, I think the reason why having a job and paying the bills is a lot of women's standards is because sometimes their income is not enough to support both people. (and that's without kids) So i don't think wanting the person to have a job is a bad thing. (as long as you aren't being hypocritical and wanting them to pay for you the rest of your life)
@cecemac988

Grace S all I’m saying is that women are always saying “a man needs to do this” or “it’s a mans job to do that” But when a man says “a woman needs to do this” or “it’s a woman’s job to do that” they get mad and say that’s sexist.

@@cecemac988 Nobody says its a man's job to do this. They say, I would like a man to do... or I prefer if a man did... (aka, having a preference which is perfectly fine) Only sexist people use that term and that's few and far. From what I've heard its more men saying that though but either way your point doesn't make any sense because that term, "its a woman's/mans job to do this," is never if rarely used.
@cecemac988
@cecemac988 4 года назад
Grace S is you’ve never heard these phrases that’s fine but I hear them all the time. You mentioned preference earlier. That’s my point. If a man “prefers” a woman who can cook, clean and wants children why do so many women get offended and say that’s sexist? If he thinks all a woman is worth is cooking, cleaning and breeding then yes, thats wrong. But otherwise I don’t get the outrage?

Wifey material is subjective to the person using the term. It is not bad if the person is using the term to describe a person they desire. It becomes bad when they use it in the sense of a social construct as if there is baseline version of wifey material. If I had a wife I would allow her to cook if she wants to cook but it’s not because of that skill that makes her any less “wife-able” than the next girl. For example talking to your friend about how wifey material is like having a conversion about how they are applicable to the status quo. I don’t think it had anything to do with sensitivity. It’s just acknowledgement.

I think the issue is that sometimes the term "wife material" can be used to looked down on someone.. I have a lot of guy friends & some of them look at a girl for & see that she's sexy but can't cook..& other traits that the stereo typical wife material. & deem her as just for fun & sex, w/c is totally unfair. I think that instead of stop using it.. we jut redefine it a bit & spin it into more positive, like they say emphasize how it could be different w/ every peron. or emphasizes other good traits like being loving, loyal & such cause I think thats more important than cooking skills honestly.

T Y my friends being sexist.. they are not sexist or even a bad person in general, because if they were, i will not be friends w/them.. they are just not that woke, or they are conditioned to think that way(because we live in a more conservative country), or even simple ignorance.. i am not excusing their behavior, in fact as their friend i take it as my job to help correct their behavior by educating them on this. the world is not black & white, yes there are those that are very good & very bad but there are plenty of kinds of people in between & a lot f the are more on the good side, gou cant just dismiss those just because there not perfect. YOU yourself ARE Not perfect. does your flaws define you? because labels such as "being sexist" is not thing you just throw around on anyone. its such an condemning title reserved only for those who truly deserve it, cause if you start throwing it on anyone, it looses its true weight.

I taught my son my name when he was 2 years old. He also knew his fathers name as well. I never got offended because I wanted to teach him I wasn’t just his mother, I was a person, with a name, just like him. When he started preschool, he was the only one in his class who knew his mother and father’s full name - first, middle, and last. He also knew his street address and our phone numbers by heart. People were always surprised he knew these facts and would praise us for teaching him these things. Over time, he just called us “mom” and “Dad”. He knew better than to call us by our birth names when he was mad. Once he was lost at Target and he went to the front desk and they paged us by our names and told us our son was at guest services.

Part of where all the sensitivity comes from is roles/expectations have changed a lot from childhood to adulthood. I was born in the 80’s. Women were starting to enter the work force because of economic issues but were chastised for it. Now it’s normal for women to work but society still wants us to jump through hoops for approval. Some people at this one point know they don’t need the approval and others live for it. Bottom line is people are always going to want to categorize others, except no one fits in this magical box people seem to think everyone fits in.

This "wifey material" stereotype is just so overrated. I totally agree with Adrienne. A man decides what traits he wants in a wife. If he is looking for an independent woman that is a hustler etc then that will be HIS "wifey material". If a man is looking for a woman that cooks and cleans etc that will be his "wifey material". But i feel like just categorizing certain traits as "wifey material " kinda invalidates women who may not have these traits. Like just bc a woman can't cook so shes not "wifey material " ? But idk tho. It is what it is.

In Sweden we dont have the titles like mr, miss or mrs . everybody is called by their first name. Children call their teachers by their first name or u call your doctor or even ur professor at university by their first name. But children still call their parents mother and father. Not by their first names.

My brother called his mom by her first name but they had such a respect and love for each other that she was cool with it. They were highkey obsessed with each other so I think it depends on the relationship between parents and kids.

Wife material is all about whether or not she's mature enough to be reasoned with and compromised with during hard times. There are a lot of aspects of a marriage that are almost business-like in nature (financial planning, managing a livable household, even *certain* duties within the realm of family planning and child-raising, etc). Basically, wifey material is no different than hubby material at the end of the day. A good potential spouse is someone who's capable and willing to set goals, make smart plans and balance all of the daily duties with you ON TOP OF also doing the work to at least *try* to stay in love with you and maintain their respect for you along the way - the last part sounds easy enough until you blink and realize that both of you are on your 13th consecutive year of doing only the most unromantic things in the world *day in and day out* while buried under mountains of stress and a couple of kids. It's hard. Nothing worthwhile ever comes easy though, right?

Jeanie was right at one point. In our country India, we have lots of stereotypes of women especially the one Jeanie said about it because when women get married, her husband and families always expect women to cook perfectly, do laundry and always stick in Kitchen. Also I understand Tamera loves cooking, laundry, chores etc but not everyone is Tamera. In that point, one should respect the fact that women are also human, they're also good and better at what some men does So let's just understand, care & love each other and live as a happy couple.

I’m not wifey material. I don’t like to cook, I don’t like to clean, kids get on my nerves. I work and I am driven. And I have a huggeee heart. But that’s it 😂

I so relate with Loni on the calling my mom by her first name. If I Ever, I mean Ever fixed my mouth to call my mom by her first name (Rose) I might get the Ro out but I’d be whistling the Se. Like “Rostheee” after she knocks out my front teeth. No Ma’am. As a mom now I love hearing my kids call me Mommy. Sometimes it even takes me by surprise like “I’m somebody’s Mommy”. Whereas I have never asked him not to call me by my first name he never uses it unless he’s telling someone my name.

During 1st to 6th grade I called my teacher miss.dahdhd but 7th to 12th my teachers in school said that in the school you have to call them by their first name because they don't want to feel old so it was a policy in the school if you called them teacher they wouldn't answer you

Are we literally making an “argument” over a statement that’s literally been around for ages 😂😂. I’m 25 currently , and I have heard the term “wife material” since I was about 15/16 y/o. Every woman has her own opinion on what wifey material is. Lonnie needs to calm down and stop being so defensive 🙄 We all know you DO NOT want to be a WIFE! And that’s fine 🤷🏾‍♀️ it’s not that serious 🙄
