A friendly and well spoken personality like yours is always welcome in Ireland. Even the most introverted souls can find many places of peace around this Island
One of the few Ireland travel vlogs I have watched to the end. I am from Dublin, I lived in Galway and I have family in Kerry and Cork, so I know the areas you visited well. Big respect for not only solo travel but for using public transport and not being the typical American tourist. Also a big THANK YOU for NOT using the stereotype Irish folk music, thats really what kept me watching.
I was thinking the exact same thing when I heard a song with Spanish lyrics start playing mid video. I love watching videos of people enjoying our beautiful country and it really irks me when they put in some over the top, copyright free “Irish” music!
Irish music is characteristic, not stereotypical of Ireland. The music of a country is inspired by the land, the atmosphere, the people, the history and traditions, and the overall spirit of the place. It's the *sound* of the country. If you have a problem with "stereotypical" representations of Ireland, presumably you also have a problem with filming "stereotypical" Irish scenery, green fields, country roads, ancient castles, sandy beaches, Georgian architecture, and of course "stereotypical" Irish people.
@@zakmartin Oh lighten up. Modern Ireland is far more than the Darby O'Gill version pushed by Irish Tourism to American tourists. I did competitive Irish dancing as a child and teenager in Dublin, so I am well aware of what Irish music is. I was surrounded by Irish music growing up, so now as an adult, its very refreshing to see a video like this,
@@zakmartin I love our cultures, traditions and music, but when it’s an American putting copyright free garbage from a website into their videos, it almost feels offensive…
How positive not a dark word said and what a pleasure to watch your video about our Emerald Isle the land of Saints and Scholars. Do come back we need the like of you here ❤
Kaaaaatttttt... you gorgeous girl. You sooo get ireland. Come visit us again... poers, saints, sinners and the beautidul green land. You are the first vlogger that gets ireland for what it is... x x x ❤
Hey Kat, it was so nice to see my country and my university through your eyes... you made all those places so familiar to me feel fresh! Next time you're back, I would recommend exploring the northern half of the country too. It's almost always overlooked by tourists but it's every bit as special as the well-beaten track of the south. Take the train from Dublin to Westport, head up to counties Sligo and Donegal, cross the border to Derry, wind your way along the Causeway Coast to Belfast and then take the train back down to Dublin again.
I really appreciate this recommendation, thank you! Donegal and Sligo are two places that I had on my list for this trip but just couldn't swing. Really eager to make my way up there! Also sending all the Trinity love haha
Wow..This was a great perspective on Ireland and I guess that comes from your literary interest. It's so different to other travel vlogs I've seen from tourists. Travelling like a local and being surprised by a regular bus journey between towns is so nice and authentic. I love that your experience of the landscapes made you think about the creation of them. Thank you for your interest and appreciation of our little country. I feel proud and happy. Thank you. You've even piqued my interested in irish literature 😊
Love your video! We are a tiny nation. Barely 6 million people but have contributed four Nobel literature laureates and six Booker prize winners with some of the greatest names in literature. and Dublin home to a booming network of magazines, publishers, bookshops, festivals and decently funded and hugely popular free libraries. But Ireland’s outsize output of brilliant writing is less of a surprise to the people who live here. Our history of joy in storytelling goes deep in ancient history. Our history of oppression under British rule followed by grim religion-based control from 1922 until our second, profound liberation that started in the late 90s has produced an outpouring of personal and social expression through the written word. Voices that were suppressed or silenced pour out through the written word and revel in the sheer joys of language, both in the English language that was imposed on us and in our native Irish. And it's so nice to see people like yourself experience and enjoy this when you come here. Hope you return soon and treat us to another video.
irish book haul coming soon? :D so happy to see you were able to pull it off, i am also wanting to go (public transport reliant) and this just gave me majorrrr inspo! :)
Irish book haul DEF coming! And yes, book the flight!! Moving around was WAYYYY easier than i was anticipating. Also like two for one deal because you get to see the beautiful scenery without having to get on a tour coach 😂
Galway girl here! So glad you enjoyed our lovely little city🥰 Connemara is gorgeous and if you like remote scenery and rolling green hills, you will definitely have to experience it on your next trip! But I do think you made the right decision by prioritising the Aran islands❤ Also next time you’re in Kerry, get yourself to Dingle bay and drive around there. You won’t be sorry!
Im gonna be realllllly real with you for a second -- I was dangling over the edge of the decision and this comment was the last nudge. I officially booked the flight to go again😂 And I'd loveeee to do Dingle not on a tour coach haha. I feel like we just saw it mostly from the drive. Thank you for the tip, I appreciate you!
Wow, Kat, you really did it! This is the first video of yours that I am watching but I think I'm going to stick around. The way you took a bookish "whim" and turned it into a life-changing adventure is so inspiring! I might book my own tickets to favourite literary destinations soon. Thank you for sharing!
Omg hi! I'm so happy you're here! And haha my favorite thing to do is to act on all my seemingly silly whims. Feels like a protest to the seriousness of life. I definitely vote you take a literary trip! It's such an intimate little delight! I just saw someone who went to Ischia after reading the Ferrante books, so there are a lot of us out there humoring the bookish whims!
I lovedddd this video! I solo travelled through europe last summer and ireland was one of my favorite spots. as a fellow irish lit fan it was so dreamy! loved all the beautiful shots in this video
I LOVE hearing things like this! For it to stand out among other places -- you know its special! The pretty words definitely adds a layer of sentimentality, for sureee ♥️
I loved loved loved this vlog! ❤I adore seeing Ireland through fresh eyes and I'm so glad you enjoyed your trip! I always hope when people come to Ireland that they have a good time 😂😂
Wow! 😍I’m so happy you didn’t wait for anyone to go with you. Imagine missing out on such beauty waiting for a travel buddy. This was such an endearing cozy vlog. Thanks for sharing this beautiful experience with us. 🫶🏽
The biggest lesson as I get older is to just do the damn thing and stop waiting for other people! And honestly timing -- I dont know that I would have appreciated it as deeply as I do now. Thanks for watching friend! ♥️☺️
Bah this trip looked so amazing!! Makes me want to go asap. Ireland has always been my #1 dream trip and getting to live vicariously through this video was lovely. Can't wait to see the book haul!
Aww I feel like our book taste and landscape taste aligns too 😂 I reallllly really feel that you'd love it Sara!! I feel like its a perfect family place too, you can go with the little one 🥰
So delighted you chose to go to Inis More. Yes Connemara is beautiful, but worth coming back for. My mum was born on Inis More, so I know it very well, we still have the house there. Many thanks for making this video.
Gorgeous video! I'm from Galway and can confirm that you made the right decision prioritising the aran islands over connemara. Those islands are magical. Having something to come back for is always lovely too. Also, Charlie Byrne's is my church , glad you liked it ❤❤
What a gorgeous video. The scenery in Ireland is amazing. My friend, who was a tourist bus driver, said he’s number one recommendation is the Beara Peninsula. You’d need to drive but it’s amazing.
just got back from being in edinburgh for the first time and the scenery and vibe of Ireland is quite reminiscent of it -- so beautiful! thanks for sharing, kat :) dublin is definitely next for me
Ahhhhh love that you got to spend some time in Edinburgh! Totally have similar vibes (I'm so itching to do the highlands there 🥹) I think you would love Dublin (and the rest of the country -- Galway was a fav for me for sureeee)
Beautiful young woman who made an equally lovely video of her journey to my country.Greetings from Kinsale,West Cork.Thank you for sharing.I hear a little Irishness in your words. You have been touched by the Fairy Folk here.
Excellent. Completely different vibe to the usual tourist videos and all the more enjoyable for that. Can't beat 'Tourism with a purpose..'. Glad you enjoyed it. BTW, a big +1 for West Cork (I'm biased as I live in Cork City). If you want to lose yourself for a week check in somewhere in the Beara Peninsula and just chill. It's good for the soul !!
Definitely one of the best videos l have ever watched on RU-vid. You are a very talented young lady and you will be welcome to our Emerald Isle anytime you want to come back. Thank you ❤
I'm not much of a lit fic reader but watching this I do want to start. This vlog was also so well filmed and the sights were gorgeous I left like I was there!
Aw you should definitely give it a shot! I feel like there is such a wide arm of lit fic, there is truly something for every reader! And thank you so much! ☺️♥️
Hmmm I may have to join you for your return trip because I’m watching this wanting to go back so bad!! Your experience with the landscapes and the people sounds exactly right. Ah, I loved all your footage and I’m happy you had such a good time!! ❤
Girl Im tracking flights for April if you want to come 👀👀 It actually makes me sick to my stomach how much I miss it on a daily basis. Thank you so much for sending all your recs over! I was consulting them frequently while there ♥️♥️♥️
looks like you had the best time!!! I am also in awe and shock at how good these Irish people can write because I read two Irish books (unintentionally) this month and both were SO GOOD!!! they were the rachel incident by caroline o'donoghue and sunburn by chloe michelle howarth. it seems like everyone in that country is blessed with the writing gene lol
YES!!! The tradition is sooooo well instilled in so many of its writers it's crazy! I started Sunburn but never finished it, love hearing that you enjoyed that one!
Amazing Vlog. Definitely get back to Cork if you can - such an amazing County. I loved Dublin for all the classic Irish literature - James Joyce and Oscar Wilde etc.
What a video, thanks for taking us with you, lovely bookstores, lovely landscape❤It reminded me of my trip in Naples that happened only for the love of Elena Ferrante 😍 I love Sally Rooney so maybe I'll get to visit Ireland, I wish 💓💓
Hi sweet friend!! Wait I LOVE that you went to Naples on the heels of Ferrante, that must have been so so special (and I SO get it. what a queen). Definitely recommend a Rooney trip to Ireland 😂
Nice little video! I am also unintentionally obsessed with Irish writers and Ireland looks absolutely stunning. Cannot wait to do some Sally Rooney tourism there some day 😊
what a magical trip!! i love what you said about feeling the history in the landscape and the magnificence of ireland. makes me want to go there even more!!
Lovely video. Glad you enjoyed your trip. 18:47 The little beach at the bottom of the cliff was used in the film “Ryan’s Daughter” starring Robert Mitchum, Sarah Miles and John Mills. From the director of “Lawrence of Arabia”. If you’re a fan of “Normal People” you should consider visiting the north west of Ireland next time. Sligo (where “Normal People” was filmed) was the home of WB Yeats. John McGahern was from the neighbouring county, Leitrim. The scenery is also fantastic. Connemara, into Mayo and Achill Island (one of the locations for “the Banshees of Inisheeran”, into Sligo and on to Donegal. All beautiful.
Connemara is a must and go up to sligo and beautiful donegal. Some of the beaches are out of this world. You'll definitely need a car next time, beautiful vlog 😊
Really nice vid. You really got to experience a lot in the short time u had. West cork is stunning and it's always cool to go to small towns and be pleasantly surprised by really lovely community events/festivals. So many wonderful bookshops. If you ever return, check out the winding stair bookshop in Dublin and the book centre in Waterford. Highly recommend reading anything by Sebastian Barry or colm tóibín. Have a good one.@@katsfieldnotes
AHHH DREAM COME TRUE! loved seeing the sights outside all those windows. so lush, so grand. so happy you got to live out Normal People fantasy! it's always such a treat to go to the physical locations mentioned in books. stunning!
Lush and grand is right! There was a literary pub crawl that I almost did too, but stopped myself and was like I think it might be too much? But now in retrospect wholly regret not doing ('cause were adults! who literally cares?) But its SO nice to indulge in literary loves in this very physical way!
There are two types of people: people who read and people who don’t. Actually, there’s another category: people who travel and those that don’t. The “don’ts” never get it. Well done on your spirit and sense of adventure as a young solo traveller. Your video is very picturesque and narrated in a clear voice. Safe travels! And don’t worry: there’s always another day to return to do something else next time or dwell a little longer.
I’m going to Ireland this week and hitting up most of the places you show. I have to say I was crying at the beauty of it all! I cannot wait to see it in person. Thank you!
I think I just spotted @Sabbatical at @7.05!? He was over here short time ago. I'm from Clare myself you captured some nice footage. I'm heading down to Killarney tomorrow that and West Cork are probably the nicest spots IMO. If you're back in Dublin next time the Secret Book Store and Marsh's Library might be worth a gawk.
What a lovely video! I’m really glad you enjoyed Ireland - I’m born and raised in Cork city so I know all the places you visited well. The landscape in Kerry is definitely special! Galway is my favourite city in Ireland, but it’s hard to beat the smaller country towns like Dingle. Come back soon!
Incredible video! Best compliment I can pay it is it made me fall in love with my country again… also given me the lust to read a book for the first time in ages too 😂 Subscribed 🙌🏻
Your description if the earth smashing itself and pulling itself together etc gave me goosebumps. Or was I just cold ? No. I listened to it a second time and sure enough same thing happened. Overall your entire video is a beautiful description of Ireland ❤
Oh, it was an excerpt from the novel Lazy City by Rachel Connolly! She's an author from Belfast. It was a part of the book that winded me as well (and got me so deeply excited to experience Ireland). I'm glad it resonated with you too! ♥️
If I were you on your nxt visit to our beautiful little country, I'd check out Irelands Ancient East. And all things around the river Boyne. Not as busy as the west side of Ireland but equally as beautiful and stunning 🇮🇪
Watched from start to finish and subbed immediately. Such a lovely and well made video of my country. I don't think we realise how lucky we are to live here. 😊
I hope you had a lovely time! Also your pronunciation of every Irish place name was perfect, which can be a rarity so you’ve definitely won the hearts of the Irish right off the bat😂
Also if you do come back to visit again, summer time in west cork and Kerry will always be lively! West Cork in particular is very cosmopolitan with many Europeans and Americans spending some of their summer there :) also the fact you managed to master our public transport systems is impressive, many Irish people struggle with that. Some more places to go would be Belfast, get to know a little bit more about this islands history, it’s a beautiful city, the people are also lovely and visiting the causeway coast nearby is majestic and steeped in mythology too.
Im always worried about my pronunciation of things, so I'm glad I got it right haha. And thank you for the tips, I really do think I need to make my way to the north eventually (and to west cork properly, of course!)
I loved this!!! So nice to see/hear about your trip in even more detail. (The Trinity college experience!! are you kidding!!) You inspire me so much! p.s. I need you to hire you as my travel planner 🤣
Hahahha I was truly living my best normal people life 😂 And SAY THE WORD. I loveeeee putting together an itinerary (though I did get a tonnnnn of help with this one haha)
I love your travel vlogs. This was absolutely delightful! I loved Books Upstairs, sadly missed The Winding Stair because we were so wiped out by our last night when we had a reservation there. Thanks for bringing us along 💚📚
Aw, I hear that! It's hard to fit it all in one go, butttt missing a place is just a call to visit again (I feel like I missed a couple of bookstores that I really wanted to see too. And I feel broken about not having gone to the national gallery actually haha)
Great video thanks for posting. I'd highly recommend Inishturk Island for a day visit and do not miss Keem Beach on Achill Island. Last of the Donkey Pilgrims by Kevin O' Hara is a book well worth reading.
Hi Great video about Ireland I'm from cork and connemerra is one of my favourite places in the world to go wild camping ,defiantly go visit next time your back oh ya n Killarney is stunning the black valley is a must x
I co-host an Irish Readathon every March if you are ever in the mood to read more amazing Irish books! Loved seeing your trip and that you had a good time!
Oh that sounds so lovely! I feel like I've been on a year-long Irish readathon haha, but will definitely join yall in March! So fun. And thank you so so much!
What a totally lovely video - the quality, presentation amazing even though I know all these places well I so enjoyed your take. Has Irish Tourism not made an offer? What a gorgeous young lady as well! 10K views in 6 days - brilliant for what is a rather niche topic! Such joy - just like what many of us are experiencing here with Tim and Kamala!
got to spend 5 weeks on inishmore with work and i miss it still... then got to spend 5 weeks on achill island ,if ever there was a place that will inspire its achill . its more than just nice people and landscapes that will blow your mind its a feeling and grounding with nature thats hard to put words to... picures and photos are stunning but visiting and feeling the place will change you .... one of the most stunning places i have ever been...
Your time on the islands sounds absolutely incredible. And I know what you mean about that feeling thats hard to put words too. You've definitely definitely got me adding Achill Islands to my list -- thank you!
What an awesome video. So many RU-vidrs just do the usual tourist stuff and don't get the real Ireland. Come back soon, there is soooo much to see and do here 😊
Hahaha ok but i could be soooooo so easily swayed into visiting brazil 👀 Let me go find a coloring book or something (though im SURE theres rich literary history there! We have to find it!)
No such thing as a bad decision but next time, you definitely need to get yourself to Clifden and up into the mountains around Connemara! Good excuse to come back...
The area you drove through on the Bus to skibereen is just called West Cork. It's renowned for it's wild landscapes and is very much in a world of it's own socially. Would recommend if you do go back to travel around the Beara peninsula. It's just so wild and untouched
