A positive update to a story we first broke last week involving college bound teenage girls being denied scholarship money by the Pasadena City Attorney, after a council member tried to use his own budget funds to make it possible.
Actually it’s blatant immaturity combined with greed. These two grabbers were going to pocket money the councilman had no right to divert to them. It was a secret payoff to them disguised and mislabeled as scholarships, ones that only the two grabbers even knew about and the fix was in to give it to them. The City Attorney caught what would have been a felony misappropriation of city money. A true profile in courage who did his job and what’s honest.
I think everyone BUT the city attorney comes off looking divisive, grasping and self-centered. The city attorney did his _job_ while councilman shows us all how much a little power can corrupt and fan egos.
@@650CA 😂 I can't vote in a county I don't live in and I can complain about the government all I want. That is explicitly protected under the 1st amendment.
@@650CA They are appointed, not voted in. It is a bipartisan process that includes every member with (possibly) conflicting views on the city council agreeing to appoint them. As noted in multiple outlets, the council members were largely as surprised as we the viewers are that this idiot would conduct himself in that manner.
You all only saw what they were willing to show. What’s more outrageous is that you still trust any news outlet to tell the whole truth or show the whole video.
The city attorney got some bad publicity, that's why he was mad. If you are going to be a public employee, you have to be ready to take the heat if you screw up. If not, go into private practice, being a public servant is not your strong suit.
@@cynymin6420The Supreme Court doesn’t care. They have lifetime appointments and zero accountability. They are the real monarchs the only thing missing is that their positions are not inherited.
Do you know the attorney screwed up? My guess is that the scholarships from a counsel man's budget didn't match established spending rules. That said, the attorney is a coward for the way he reacted to the reporter. Put a hold on the checks and fix the problem. Do it quietly. But if you are going to pull a bone head public relations stunt expect to get trashed.
Who said there was anything wrong with it? You're making a strawman argument. The problem was the councilman misappropriated funds for the purpose of giving these scholarships. His budget isn't pocket money for him to spend on whatever he feels like. Or do you believe that politicians should be able to spend taxpayer money in any little way they please?
No the counsel member should be ashamed for taking taxpayer money that didn't belong to him and handing out like candy, if he wanted to give them free money it should have come from his own pocket not mine.
Why should the attorney be fired for doing his due diligence? The councilman was misappropriating funds to a purpose they weren't intended for. You're just easily duped by the sight of little girls looking sad on TV. But the scholarship money was illegitimately offered and that's not the fault of the attorney who did exactly as he should have done to safeguard taxpayer funds from abuse.
Why would you want to take away a 500 scholarship to help the girls become better educated? Then look at the response from the Administration? Would you want someone like that who has a mean heart to represent your city?
Because its not their money to give away? Its tax dollars and there are proper procedures for spending it? And just handing it out to random people isn't in any way shape or form that proper procedure.
Because they don't think Brown Girls are gonna amount to much. They just fear them having more babies where they don't have to work and mooching off all of us Taxpayers.
Unless you were born yesterday you might have caught the part where the attorney said in a beleaguered voice that he's ALREADY EXPLAINED IT! It's a cheap trick of the media to keep asking why? why? why? when they've already received the explanation. They do it on purpose to rile someone up to the point where they will lose their cool and snap. And that's exactly what this scumbag "journalist" is doing. Sad to see so many are duped by such a cheap trick. "Oooohh...the man said a POTTY WORD!!! Sqweeeeee." Ridiculous.
Seems like that's exactly what he did do. Or are you confused about the concept of process? You seem to think it's the attorney's job to hover over the shoulder of every single council member and look at what they're doing every time they touch pen to paper. And gently correcting their mistakes like a kindergarten teacher hovering over a toddler. If the councilman can't understand the rules of his office and handle them appropriately, he's the one who needs to be out.
Yeah! Vote him out! Who the hell wants a city attorney who prevents councilmen from misappropriating taxpayer funds and handing out taxpayer money like Santa Clause giving out goodies?
1:32 I am so glad this news organization kept this clip in. Too often I don't see news organizations calling out people's behavior, and showing how ridiculous it is. I'm glad that they showed the reporters reaction.
@@TheREALOC1972 I think you’d have a hard time proving that when it was done with transparency and honesty. It’s not unusual for grants to come out of a councilman’s budget. Per the video, process wasn’t followed, which I can accept. But to claim it’s criminal is a bridge too far.
It's sad that it's always fine to give politicians and corporations billions but regular Americans always get screwed. These girls deserve the best start they can get .
@@benx6264 Did you see the mutliple cuts and edits in the "interview?" My guess is that is where he explained that the "scholarships" were in violation of the law and the Texas constitution. The "journalist" was kind enough to edit those parts out.
Just say how it was an improper way of using the money....and tell the councilman before the public meeting n embarrassing the girls their families and the city. Completely improper handling this situation from city administration n city attorney he needs to be removed. City agenda subjects don't happen at the end of day they take the time to assure all is correct....so where was the review of attorney before meeting was he asleep he needs to be removed so embarrassing and unprofessional.!!!!
No, he just did his job. The Counsilman didn;t file the paperwork to give away that money, that's called "Misaapropation of funds", which is a felony and could have landed everyone, including the 2 girls, in prison. He was just doing his J-O-B.
@@TheREALOC1972, why didn’t he explain that, and show them the proper way to proceed! “Just doing his job”, should include that, along with willingly taking the time to explain that point to the reporter! There are plenty people in positions of power, that use it to create “red tape”, or otherwise deny benefits to deserving individuals. If you don’t like explaining things, maybe don’t get a job working with people!
Wow,just seen this video. 3 hispanics, a public servant and two young high school girls who EARN, not WIN college scholarships totaling $1000.00 .Okay, Where is the discrepancy? The proper paperwork? Okay. Hand them the paperwork and Life continues on. But No. $1000.00 becomes the whirlwind tornado fueled by a seemingly irate city attorney with a vulgar attitude and a sophomoric highschoolers' mental capacity. When a simple question triggers vulgarities and a temper tantrum,Something else was amidst. If this city attorney was acting with malice or racial bias, this will only magnify his aggression and from the looks of the videos portrayal of him, He Is on a tirade.
Yeah, probably don't think Brown Girls are gonna amount to much. They just fear them having more babies where they don't have to work and mooching off all of us Taxpayers.
Anger is a telling behavior from a city official who is not speaking from a position of integrity or honesty. I am glad that the community provided where the city could not.
Mexican county what you expect. Just look at their country. no matter where they go, They make it sh1t. The girls will turn out racist anyway, Mexicans women are racist as hell, They will end up with a mexican guy that look like a thug who treat them like sex slaves.
Anger is also a response from someone who is tasked with something - and when he does it, gets mischaracterized by the media. I don't know exactly what DID happen here - but I know from the past 20 years of watching the media that they will twist, insinuate and outright lie to make a story fit their agenda.
What did he do that was dishonest? He acted in due diligence of his job and prevented taxpayer funds being disbursed illegitimately. Trying to make him out to be a villain for carrying out his duties correctly is obscene and abusive and you should be ashamed for piling on.
Interesting. My society pays for all education. Including out of country. Not real big on religion, so that is probably the difference. We actually take action instead of praying somebody does it for us. We even have a guaranteed month off, and a year paternity.
@@Look_What_You_Did what society is this? @@seananderson5334right or wrong, that phone call was a bad look. If he was right, didn't mean much when compared to that phone call. Undermined himself because now people have to wonder what problems that attorney has behavior-wise. Right or wrong, be professional with that call. Bad optics.
@@seananderson5334 I believe the story states he was wrong. It's not bad to scrutinize and ensure that money wasn't appropriated incorrectly, which the article states it was not, but you might want to make your case like a professional. I think people would appreciate that he checked, and found out it was done correctly instead of getting defensive. I'd think any attorney would be well versed in maintaining their cool.
I would like to know more about the scholarship, how and who was eligible for it. If it was OPEN to all kids or just a select few. Keep it fair to all.
GreaT group of folks and the kids in Pasadrna need this kind of help. Very honorable. The city attorney is quite a Bobblehed. Pitiful. Good luck young ladies.🌹
Definitely important to cross your T’s and dot your I’s when dealing with government agencies as the giver or receiver. Disappointing to hear a city attorney raising his voice and cussing 🤬, unfortunately there seems to be a vast majority of ignorant government officials in Texas so I’m not totally surprised.
Can we see how that phone call started, i know there’s time restraints on how long the story is, but it could seem edited to fit our narrative. Just show the whole thing so no one comes back and says “it was changed up for the story”
I imagine if a government employee wanted to try to get his or her boss in trouble, they can misappropriate $500 to people in need to try to get the boss to react badly while trying to get the money back.
It reminds me of a friend who lost a scholarship from a community group in his hometown in Idaho in the mid-80's after they didn't agree with his criticism of the Iran-Contra events. When word got out he ended up with more scholarship money than he had been promised. He retired from the Army a few years ago and is a member of the same community group that revoked his scholarship all those years ago.
OMG. This was hilarious watching the Pasadena City Attorney act like he was on some K-drama mystery show. The poor thin-skinned person needs to hide from the public eye like doing legal research in a quiet windowless room with a soda machine for a private firm. Nice to see the representation of younger more emotionally mature women in this story.
It’s not prejudice if the money wasn’t his to give in the first place. It’s taxpayer $. It’s a little irritating if our tax $ is being given out in scholarships. Don’t get me wrong, I have a college bound student too. The beauty of the story is that the community came together to help these young ladies who worked had to get into A&M 🎉 which is a very competitive to get into. Congratulations to them 🎉
@@conservativehispanic5918it’s 500$. That amount of money is NOTHING for a city. The City Attorney is a cheap bitter little man. Who clearly wanted to send a message.
@@snicole042yes but it just 500$. I spend that much on take out! If you have an issues with a city giving out 500$ to a well deserving kid. Then you are the bad guy.
Great outcome but please follow up with that attorney and get the full story either way. I have no stake other than being a past resident of Pasadena yet I am very interested in the real story behind this move. I pray it is not the KKK still thriving in my old home. One of the reasons I am gone. PS I am an old white guy but I could not stomach the actions back then.
Great story! I'm glad the community came together and raised so much scholarship money. What ever happened to the original $500 scholarships, though??? Does the Pasadena attorney and council member still have that original scholarship money in his own pocket or hidden away in the local finances to take later? Is he going to get away with this?
What a nothing burger! If the councilman acted inappropriately & did NOT follow proper procedure, then it was the city attorney's RESPONSIBILITY to act. Some common sense & MATURITY & not jumping the gun on the part of the community & all could have been resolved without this garbage "outrage"
If the councilman acted inappropriately then it was the city attorney's RESPONSIBILITY to act WITH some common sense and maturity. Then all this could have been resolved without all the outrage.
Except the attorney is a white republican (draw some conclusions on his thoughts on ethnicities) and the mayor and girls were not..... just saying.... the way he talked to that reporter didn't help his case either. Definitely triggered. Wouldn't want to see that attorney under pressure.
"YOU ONLY HAVE HALF THE STORY!" "Then why don't you tell me the other half?" "DON'T YOU RAISE YOUR VOICE AT ME!" That's some classic "bully makes himself out to be the victim" behavior.
I’m confused. Did the scholarships initially come from taxpayer money for the whole community? Nothing more important than education, I’m sure these women deserve it.
Each council member's office usually has an alloted budget, which is usually city tax money. He probably tried to use some of that. Personally, I'd prefer they use a thousand dollars to help kids with school than on a "business" related golf outing or council lunch meeting.
Unfortunately, the girls learned a lesson from this. I think they are smart enough to figure out the world as they continue on their journey. Speak out against injustice for yourself and advocate for others.
What I'd like to know is why the City attorney had a major meltdown when a member of the city council tried to use his(presumably)own discretionary funds to finance these kids' scholarships?
The merit system is gone….too many unqualified people getting into good schools, bringing them down when they could go to junior colleges, gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed. Instead, colleges have had to “dumb-down” programs for so many to “pass” essentially handing out “toilet paper” degrees. How many students take loans and apply for grants? Grant monies take applications, sometimes complicated ones but they are available.
Imagine if every "adult" in America understood that knowing Where your public library is, having a library card, and knowing how to use a catalogue system provides you with everything you need, except transportation, for a FREE higher education better than you can pay for at any college/university in America.
Okay this seemed confusing but I think it would be illegal for a city council member to give money for scholarships out of his operation funds appropriated from city tax dollars. It was nice to see citizens come up with an alternative. This is actually the city attorneys job. He notified the council member that it was illegal.
Yeah, he really shot himself in the foot with that phone call with the reporter. Had he been professional, we probably don't get that clip and his actions become a much smaller news story. He basically made himself the story on that call alone.
I hate it when people make other's follow the law too, but only if it's for a good cause. People should always be able to break the law for a good cause, am I right?
This was just a clip of the whole conversation with “Dale”. If the guy did not follow the proper channels for this funding to be approved then that needs to be recognized as well in this report.
Imagine being so petty you raise a stink about a council member using $1,000 of his own funds to give kids scholarships. There are city council members all over the country who spend 10x that on eating out on tax payer's dime and no one bats an eye.
@@PandoraBear357it has nothing to do with pettiness. It’s a matter of respecting processes that are put into place for a reason. I stand by what I said. The whole story is not being provided here in this report. None of the issues that clearly are present or arguments against why they can’t provide this scholarship were presented. I blame the news reporter for not providing a clear picture on that. I don’t think there is anything wrong with the scholarship at all I agree there. But the question still remains, why was it it an issue? I’d like to hear more on that from those who opposed it. I may not agree with the reason why, I might agree with it. Pasadena City Attorney Jay Dale should be ashamed of himself and is not worthy to serve such a position if that's the way he not only acts, but responds.
City Attorney is not a professional and needs to be removed from office. He stopped this scholarship because he COULD. This was political and personal.
We keep electing and hiring non-professionals to do work of we the people. And this is always the result. First problem is you can’t offer scholarships and then renege. Second problem is $500 is nowhere near enough for any type of scholarship. It doesn’t even cover books or school supplies for a year anymore. Third problem the city attorney is a jerk. Offering a scholarship and then taking away the money after they’ve been awarded is perpetrating a fraud. It’s nice that the public stepped in, but they shouldn’t have had to.
You didn't listen very well. The city attorney offered nothing, he made the councilman follow the law. The Councilman illegally offered the money (he didn't do something right to allocate that money to the girls) and he was called out on it. And it was taxpayer money in the first place, so it was the public paying for it.
@@thisbushnell2012I also laughed when he called the reporter "brother" and "dude".... With rhetoric that eloquent, wondering if he's even qualified to be a city attorney. Guessing it's just something people pick versus qualify for the job. Republican version of DEI.

Or maybe the council man is just trying to cover his butt for doing something illegal. But let's ignore that, it was only $1000. They should be able to give whoever they want money, how often they want to as long as it's $1000 or less at a time, am I right?
Hang on--are people really not understanding the story?? A government employee can't unilaterally determine how funds will be spent. If I paid taxes in this county I wouldn't want my tax dollars going to individual scholarships appointed by an individual councilman either. The attorney is the good guy in this situation!
Sorry, I not only want more details but I want to see the footage of the reporter talking to the city attorney for say, at least 5 minutes prior to the clip used. I need to know why the city attorney prevented them from getting those scholarships. There must be a reason, but in any case, he obviously handled it incorrectly.
Real reason, he won't say. Excuse was error in the process leaving legal liability. But the city has done this general dispensing of funds many times with no problem and 2 layers of approval were given.
@@BradKandyCroftFamily No it didn't. The attorney claimed he did with no legal citation. The councilman had 2 levels of approval and showed it was common practice. Here is a tip.
