In an effort to find innovative ways to impact the community, Girls First, Inc. has joined forces with other local Henry County organizations to create a community collaborative to develop a community garden in a low-income area within McDonough, GA. This project is a training and demonstration pilot. Inter-generational relationship building and public education are the primary focuses of the endeavor. A Groundbreaking for Community Garden was held on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at the corner of Doris Street and Brisendine Street in McDonough, GA.
The community collaboration includes the local Henry County Branch, NAACP, the Henry/Clayton Section, the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), and the Top Ladies of Distinction (TLOD) New Rock Chapter. This group will provide guidance, consultation, and volunteerism for the initiative in areas such as: environmental justice, health and wellness, and community beautification efforts. The community collaboration has developed a partnership with the city of McDonough, GA, the city will loan the land for the garden and assist with land cultivation and preparation. The McDonough’s Middle and High Schools have partnered with the community collaboration to conduct education and training activities that teach the students how to grow and maintain a community garden in McDonough, GA. The community collaboration will conduct outreach to the surrounding community to seek volunteer help with planting, gardening maintenance, training, educating and sustainability in McDonough, GA.
