Get some serious GIS skills in this first ever Tool Belt Tuesday where I will be going over the select tool in ArcGIS Pro. I'll show you the different modes of selection, how to add features to and remove features from your current selection, as well as how to select just from your current selection. I will also show you how to use the new marching ants graphic that is similar to photo editing software.

You would not believe the number of trains that went by while I was trying to get this recorded. One kept going back and forth with squealing brakes. 😏

Having only taken a college course about two years ago, It's really nice to see that somebody made an organized channel where I can review. Looking up tutorials usually results in being intimidated by large blocks of text, and talking with my professor for review in a course that I'm no longer paying him for doesn't seem right either. My only suggestion would be to briefly mention the type of things that can result from what you went over in the video -- whether that be as a 30 second intro or outro. Something like "if you're looking to do something on this list, you're in the right place." You don't even need to read it off.

Welcome to GIS Chops! Do you use GIS daily? Or would you say you use it once or twice a week? The objective of this channel is to get people the skills they need so they don't have to go ask the full time GIS person for help. Thanks for the tip on the intro and wrapping up with a summary. I appreciate your feedback.

Thank you, now I finally know how to unselect the select function. Just by going to modify and pressing scale or somewhat else.

How do you turn off the selection tool? My curser still has the little symbol on it showing that I'm using the selectin tool and then every time I try to move around on my map it starts selecting instead of moving the map.

You can activate the Explore tool, or click and drag using your mouse wheel button to pan the map. I think there’s also a keyboard shortcut to pan - if you hold down the C key that will change the tool to the Explore tool while you’re holding it down, or Ctrl + Alt + C will switch the active tool to the Explore tool.

How about selection overlapping features in the same layer. I know you can add them one by one but not sure if there’s an option to select all with one click.
@GISChops
@GISChops Год назад
You can select overlapping features by dragging a rectangle instead of single clicking. That would select anything intersecting that rectangle, even overlapping features.

Does ArcMap have a similar selection tool as 'Select objects by style' which is in MapCad tools (used in MapInfo)? Basically you select an object, click on Select objects by style, and all objects which are the same style (color, line width, fill, etc) as the selected object will be selected. You can do this without having to created any attribute fields.

I will have to look into whether Pro is able to do this and if not, I’ll submit an idea to implement it. That sounds handy.

Is the layer you are trying to select features from marked as selectable on the “List by selection” tab on the contents pane?
@GISChops
@GISChops 3 года назад
Having a tool active in the modify features pane can affect your ability to make selections as well.

Thanks for watching! You may have to switch to the Edit tab on the ribbon to see the selection tool. To make it available regardless of which tab you have active, you can right click the tool and choose “Add to quick access toolbar”. Then it will be a small icon up in the upper left area above the ribbon that is always accessible.

HI!,I have imported an Excel file into ArcGIS Pro, and it created a standalone table and various layers based on the data. However, when there are new data entries in the Excel file, how can I synchronize all the layers and the standalone table accordingly? Is there a way to update them automatically with the new data from the Excel file
@GISChops
@GISChops Год назад
You could run this in a scheduled script - pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/tool-reference/data-management/refresh-excel.htm

@@GISChops Thank you so much for your response and guidance on how to automatically sync Excel data. I really appreciate your help as I'm quite new to this. Just to clarify, I was wondering if you could kindly share some insights on how to sync the layers in ArcGIS Pro based on the data from the Excel file. I've managed to sync Excel data, but I'm unsure about ensuring the corresponding layers reflect the changes too. Your assistance has been invaluable, and I'm eager to learn more about this process. Thank you once again for your time and expertise! Best regards,
