"I am a rapist," said a Frenchman accused of drugging his wife so that he and dozens of strangers could sexually assault her, his first testimony in a trial that has horrified France. For in-depth analysis and a deeper perspective on gender violence and sexual assault, FRANCE 24's Mark Owen is joined by Dr Ummni Khan, Associate Professor in the Department of Law and Legal Studies at Carleton University. Dr. Khan researches the socio-legal construction of deviant sexuality and addresses the self-serving myths that perpetrators use to justify their actions. She says that Gisele Pelicot has become a symbol for the world in shifting shame onto the perpetrators.

As soon as they're convicted, they will be. While it's unlikely that any of these nasty men will be declared "not guilty," innocent people HAVE been accused and brought to trial in the past. It's only fair that EVERYONE be granted the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in court.

Being healthy is a necessity and lawful thing in France. The victims needs to confront their attackers. It's a part of the process to make sense of what happened to them. The victims want and need this confrontation to be able to "try" to get on the road of recovery. And furthermore, only dictatorship jailed defendants without a trial where they can defend themselves

The only times we see women doing violent acts is when they are STILL going through violence, even after trying to get away from past trauma which finally made them snap. There is no psychological explanation because women experience much worse and have the highest numbers of PTSD, yet we do not see them committing such crimes. Even when women do commit violence it is usually to get away from violence happening to them in the moment or in an inescapable situation, such as intimate partner violence. We don't see websites set up by women so they can gather to recruit other women to commit horrific assaults on men. No, what we see is women, who have survived much, much worse trauma, organise themselves to support each other as survivors. If it had to do with his "trauma" then he certainly would not have been able to find 72 other men to join him in his crimes. Imagine how the world would be if, instead of the Me too movement, women were behaving like these men?

Saying that abuse begets abuse is a profound misunderstanding of what it means to be a victim of abuse. The majority of abuse victims do not go on to abuse themselves. Given that one abuser can abuse a multitude of people if it were the case that abused become abusers the whole world would be a disgusting and vicious place. Most victims get in with their lives in the best way they can. He was responsible for his actions and the people who abused him are responsible for theirs. He didn't just choose to do this he, he actively hid it, he researched, he recruited, he obtained drugs to drug his wife, he planned it meticulously so well that h got away with it for a decade. It is true that the abused abused in a decent size numbers of victims to lead o. To offend. Their pattern. Of offences varies drastically compared to their particular form of abuse, it's severity and who di their abusing to them. Of course, no excuse...but it does crest the set up for future abuse. Others, however, are not the same exernalisers and don't seek to hurt others. They do instead abuse themselves and self harm though with their internalising process of their trauma.

Women have experienced much, much worse and the highest numbers of PTSD is found in women, yet we don't see them organising planned assaults on men, and we certainly don't see them finding 72 other women to also commit horrific crimes with them. No, what we see is women forming groups to support victims, organising the Me too movement, promoting therapy and creating domestic violence shelters to help ALL victims. He is 71. He had over 50 years to get help for his claims of "trauma." This is VAW. His "past" is not relevant because he found 72 other men to join him in his crimes. Also, as is said to actual survivors who are women, "why didn't he report any of these crimes at the time?" We can't even ask, "why did he wait 50 years?" because his claims are coming out AFTER he has been caught committing crimes that statistically are 98% done by men, and 89% of their victims are women. No, excuses.

The reason we all know about this case (which has been happening since 2020) is because Giselle and her daughter decided to go public with it because the lawyers and people around her were starting to put pressure on her and say she was to blame. So no. It’s not on them. Women are always told they caused themselves to be raped from what they were wearing, saying, doing.

I have a respect for the defence counsel in such cases. To fight the strongest case you can, despite any taste it leaves in your mouth, is essential for a robust legal system. When this man is convicted and sentenced it can never be declared invalid or a witch hunt because his legal team made sure it wasn’t. Yes but the issue is the severity and type of abuse can then be predictive on whether the victim turns our to be an abuser. It can even predict well if they will engage in more violent abuse, what gender their victim will be and a whole host of other factors. Not all men go on to abuse, many do not, and it is never an excuse (YES THEY SHOULD HAVE GOT THERAPY ANS EARLY INTERVENTION) But a lot do abuse since they are externalisersz not internalisers of their own pain and trauma. This is why we really need to craxk down harder on crimes against children and get better supoort and help for victims. This stuff ruins lives and violence just breeds more violence.

I wonder what relevance the ages of the people involved have. It would be relevant to raise the period of duration of the crimes for consideration of context and extent, but the age is irrelevant. Also irrelevant is the personal opinion of the desk anchor. I pray that this also puts much needed emphasis on the care we offer to boys. They are seldom as protected or monitored in comparison to girls, without the preparation that we get when stepping out into the world. They are made to believe that because they are boys they could handle anything. When bad things in fact happen they seldom say anything and it of creates sickness of the mind. Men are no inherently dangerous I think, just forgotten children who eventually band together in a pact of secrets.

We actually try a lot to warn teen boys in our classes that it us not just girls at risk and then men often are spiked and assaulted too or taken advantage of when they are intoxicated significantly. We try hard to explain to them it happens and that there is no shame to report it is it doesn't happen to them and for them to access help.

But some have undoubtedly died in the interim, some may have fled to countries that France doesn't have extradition treaties with, and some just haven't been identified or can't be found. This trial does NOT mean that Interpol and other agencies will quit looking, or that the rapists won't stand trial when they're found.

I'm glad he is remorseful. What people don't understand is the arguments for defense is by the lawyer whose job it is to protect his client. Married partners should protect each other. That culture left with toxic feminism. It should not be tolerated from either gender. I hope he is made accountable without sexist discrimination and false or exaggerated narratives. We also need equivalent laws for false rape accusations by women. This means they should get prosecuted equivalent as rapists in those instances and made to pay compensation to the innocent accused. Until that happens, the sexist laws will continue to facilitate women to be criminals without accountability.

From what I remember reading her husband was caught filming up womans skirts unbeknownst to them in a store. That led to officials searching his computer and finding all the videos of his wife. There was a website called without her consent. It's been taken down now. They also found he had photos of his daughter too. His wife I gone to Dr's for different symptoms I think they thought she had signs of dementia but it was what he drugged her with from around 2010-2020.
