Wonderful cast, production. Verdi's music... so tender, so vengeful. This is truly opera. Bravissimi a tutti.

Thanks very much for sharing this. Yes it was the production I saw. I have nevr forgotten it, and have never seen an Otello like it since. This left a lasting impression on me as did the elektra of Gerda Lammers. Thanks again.

Amazing! The only regret: not having a whole performance with the same KTK and Jimmy

I performed Otello four times with McCracken with the Opera Company of Boston the year before this performance. The view of this performance was very much like my view from the principal horn chair in the orchestra and brought back many fine memories. It always seemed that Jimmy threw his heart and soul in his performances of Otello, as well as the eight performances of Aida he did with us in the early 1980s with Shirley Verrett as Aida. An amazing performer!

He sure did throw himself into the role. I saw him several times and was always worried about the Desdemona. I ( like them) found his violence a bit too real. Offstage McCracken was was of the nicest people in opera.

During my lifetime (I am 57), we have had three truly great Otellos: Vickers, McCracken and Domingo. Vickers was overwhelming in every way. Indeed, upon watching videos of his Moor, Vickers seems otherworldly, in another dimension. McCracken wasn't as subtle, but perhaps more spontaneous, and hugely passionate. His Otello was largely comparable to that of Vickers; but McCracken's was of this earth. Also, Vickers sometimes seemed choreographed (which is NOT to denigrate him; he was sui generis). Whereas McCracken always seemed in the moment. Domingo did not have the sheer vocal heft of those two; and I never heard him live. But I am assured by online friends who DID that PD had enough power for Otello. And his voice was certainly the most beautiful of these three.

Zriter59 Escritor I never saw McCracken as Otello, but I did see both Vickers and Domingo (several times) in the theater. Vickers was a terrifying force of nature. Domingo portrayed a more wounded beast, rather than Vickers' animal fury. Both valid portrayals. But Domingo had by far the more beautiful voice, and his sound was vivid and rich in the large Met theater.

@@wotan10950 I didn't. I'm a teenager! I wasn't alive when any of these great singers were around. ; ( If only I could have seen Del Monaco, Corelli, Callas, Tebaldi, all the great singers of that golden age.
@wotan10950
@wotan10950 4 года назад
XxSaruman82xX Ohhh! It’s kinda hard then to make a judgement based on recordings. They often sound much different in the theater. It’s nice that you’ve developed such good taste in music as a teenager. I saw many of the greats - Sutherland, Sills, Nilsson, Price, Caballe, Scotto, Te Kanawa, Freni, Domingo, Pav, Gedda, Vickers, Horne, Verrett, Merrill, Milnes, many others - but I only base my opinion on what I heard in the theater, not recordings.

So all that matters is my utter devotion. If there is nothing left of me....if I spend eternity in Hell- that's OK. As long as I have my right mind, I will always behave as a Catholic. But now, it seems I have No choices. And I do not know the future

The moron here IS ITALIAN: I obviously KNOW. Steve asked about DesDAYmona at 28:01 with an "AY" sound and that's not correct. You pasted a link to a correct pronunciation in fact there is no "AY" sound. By the way I don't find it so important that's a good singer, but I know what i'm saying.
@ShuBaarb
@ShuBaarb 7 лет назад
OH MY GOD, I was born and still live in the same town of Giuseppe Verdi himself! XD There is no AY sound such as 28:01, and both pronunciation provided by your link hasn't any AY sound. In fact Steve (I think ironically) asked who is DesdaYmona, because it's very strange for italians to hear that... I can assure you that at 28:01 you can hear a Y where it shouldn't be, and I say that without any need of calling you moron... but... ok, it's funny we can go on forever! And I say again, it's not important if that little error is made in every performance of a singer who's not mother language.
@ShuBaarb
@ShuBaarb 7 лет назад
you started that... i don't care too, but not caring for you seems a good reason to call someone moron about something you don't care about XD
