They've played ONE game using some new tactics and these two are saying we should just give up and go back to what we've been doing the previous 6 years? Firstly, a lot of our players are going to be borderline too old for the next world cup, secondly we're already seeing teams like England adopting our old game plan, third WHY would we not want our team to expand their skillsets in the areas that we were previously lacking??? ONE game guys and we WON that game against the number 2 team, I think ya'll are tripping.
@robertjan002 yeah I don't blame him. The backs were much more exciting. We have some of the best backs in the world so let's use them to the full potential. Mega exciting because you can see what they are trying to do.
Do you want winning rugby or pretty rugby. Everyone else complains about the boks style because they can’t beat them so try to make them change the boks winning style.
A suprising analysis...after 6 years and 2 world cup wins I 100% believe Doc Rassie has a plan, that brain is always analysing on a different level that we mear mortals cant appreciate.Take the win. It´s not reinventing the way Bok´s play, it´s innovating the way we play!
For the first time gents i respectfully disagree with you. Adapting our gameplan and the way we play is brilliant. Watching siya and psdt down the wing in full flight was exciting. Lets speed it up even more with Williams at 9 and Sacha at 10 for the next game.
Guys guys guys.. all this means is that the Boks will have the OPTION of an attacking game. WC 2027 is in Australia - it's dry, it's running rugby, it's end to end. World Rugby is trying to negate scrum-dominated games.. Please give Rassie and co a chance. Also, we tried playing tight rugby against Ireland - and lost against them for 6 years. So.. even if we had to put Faf on rollerskates and Pieter Steph in a tutu, it bloody worked!
Not sure what you guys smoked before this episode...but I would check it, likely a bad batch. We need to develop our back-line attack phase and it will take some time.
I listened to the Irish media and the NZ media and they were generally saying that they're terrified of what we could become. And here these guys are saying we're not playing traditional Bok rugby....
You cant win 3 world cups in a row without adapting, i think this is brilliant for the Springboks , the rest of the world is all talking about it. We've built up our fundamentals and now we're adding the spice , really exciting stuff. I understand there's going to be some growing pains with this new style but I'm sure when it clicks we're gonna be a force to be reckoned with.
It's not a new style, it's simply adapting on the field to what's happening. U can't say, let's up and under alot b4 a game and think shuts going to work. All of you pretending U have a grip and handle on the game but can't actually state in any clarity which way the play will go minute by minute b4 it's hindsight. You rugby kenners and gurus all sound the same but know zip.
@@user-qe1tv1bu2f it’s not just adapting on field , are you ok????? Those are pre planned moves it doesn’t all just happen on instinct, it’s all about game plans , in the World Cup we passed way less , and these past 2 games way more with brown . It’s completely a new style of attack Even Rassie said so the rugby guru , I guess he knows zip. So I’m confused by your message 🤣🤣.
Don't agree, Boks need to develope this part of their game, when we don't get go forward and teams front up physically like England did in the Semi then we need to be able to switch things up and be confident they can play this way.
Adapting to what? The external factors that necessitate adaptation have to be existential, they can’t be imagined. Adaptation happens in response to external pressure. It can’t be preemptive. We can’t guess what we’re adapting to. We can’t even assume the very need to adapt. Adaptation has to be known and necessitated. For example the rest of the world doesn’t want to do 6-2 bench splits. They do it because they have to adapt to us. We are the external pressure that necessitates their adaptation. And because we are successful in what we do, they are forced to adapt to that which is most natural to us which gives us the advantage. We have to stick with success until success becomes failure or conditions (laws) are changed so much that it’s impossible to still achieve success. But the failure or negative impact of changed conditions has to materialize on the field. We can’t predetermine it, not least because the predetermination itself is blind. We’re obliged to try for a third successive World Cup employing the method that hasn’t yet been beaten. Let it be beaten. Then let it be beaten again for certainty. And then we will we need to adapt and we will know where and what we need to adapt to.
Keo and Zels what happened? Loving the potential of what we saw on Saturday. So much international media is lauding what they saw from the Boks. I loved seeing PSDT and Siya in the wider channels.
I encourage the boks adapting to the times. World rugby is trying to weaken the "brutal" playstyle we love so Rassie is thinking ahead. Love your opinions either way
If we are so brutal, how come we win by so little every time and allow teams to come back big time. Stop thinking that those other blokes arnt just as brutal. I don't see them running off the field yelling mommy, the boks are brutal
Rassie is a giggling pansy in comparison to a more serious brain like the Irish coach. The difference is we have depth. Stop thinking like a Voortrekker in bloody ossewa.
I'm just loving the new and expansive Bokke game plan... André Pollard should have been substituted much earlier... he had no idea where the H was... 😊🏉
It's no longer a 15 man game Zels, It is a 23 man game. The game has evolved. Rassie has seen loop holes in the rules. Added to this, we have built squad depth over the years and other countries have not done that. They unfortunately have not been as forward thinking as the springbok coaches.
I hear what you guys are saying ito the Boks gameplan. But let's have the season unfold and see where we are in October. I am actually quietly optimistic about where we're going. This attacking shape vs NZ is going to be interesting... Their defense isn't quite as narrow or quick. But I loved the sight of Kolisi charging down the wide channels. Hanekom, Dayimani, Roos, Elrigh and the like waiting in the wings. Libbok and Masuku will also cook in this gameplan. Will start Masuku/Grant vs Portugal and Manie & Reinach vs Aus/Arg potentially and Handre vs NZ.
I think we will probably play narrow vs NZ because that works the best against them to nullify their game. But difference now is that NZ will have a nightmare trying to prep against SA because they don’t know how we will play. That alone is already a big benefit.
@@herchellejacobs7458 Kwagga was terrible early on but grew into the game and put in a solid shift in the 2nd half. But he is best when he comes on fresh in the 2nd half. I like Roos but he is very green and wary how he will come up against a very good Irish pack. We are definitely missing Wiese.
@@davidwalker2402seems like your trying to say we should only play a certain way now, that sounds more like ignorance to me, rather than a bok fan who is dismayed the podcasters didnt agree with his view point of fast attacking rugby only.
I can understand Zels concern but i think Rassie knows world rugby will change scrum rules as we are very dominant on the area. So to play fluid rugby will be the only option. Look we already play fency rugby at school and club level so i think its gona work. Great show as usual guys.
It’s just not our style of rugby and it also means that there is no longer a clash of styles, it becomes one dimensional and it’s not a style that were likely to win with the current players
OK the world is already worried if we going to play expansive rugby, especially Sir John Kirwan, if we can get the cohesion right, with forwards dominating up front , great defense and attacking backline, no one will match the boks. Look how well the bulls did in the urc, yes fell short in the final, because we didnt play how we rocked the urc the whole season with running the ball. Do you two blokes sit in your comfort zone and play stamp kar rugby, you were all so happy to hear Tony joins boks as attack coach, no you singing a different tune, Im with Rassie, i trust Rassie, we will win another world cup. Rassie is in your head in your head.
The reason is to maintain our power, aggressive, and set piece/ structured game with more attacking variables/ expansion. Which, if successful with more experience and repetition, will create a more complete team. I do not think the goal is either or, the goal is to take the nature of the boks to the next level. How the gents can argue that it's impossible to evolve your game towards being complete in all facets is beyond me.
I couldn't even make it to 10min with these cackling fools. The rest of the world is trembling for what the Boks can become once we play more attacking rugby and yet these buffoons can't see the massive potential. I don't know about you, but seeing King Kolisi put down Henshaw was one of the highlights of the game. The same King Kolisi put KLA away for that try with a similar attacking shape. It's a good thing these guys aren't coaching the Boks.
This has got to be the first time that I’ve disagreed with Keo and Zels. Am usually onboard with their train of thought, however, their criticism of the Boks attacking endeavors kind of feels like the Boks are buggered if they do and buggered if they don’t.
You two seem to have completely missed Andrew Porters illegal pulling down the scrum and pre-engaging the entire first half. The ref never caught on. Steenekamp finally shut it down at the end.
Faf played coast to coast at the lions... I also doubt that they kick a lot in Japan. I think we have decided that we are one trick pony and want to remain that way. I think South Africa has more depth and skill to show and Rassie is trying to mine it. This reminds me of the world cup. Where only Rassie knew what he was doing. I suspect that in Durban they will revert back to world cup rugby.
It's always concerning when you see unexpected change... But so long as the core components and foundation of the team remain, think we are in safe hands. We have a changing of the guard expected to happen over the next two years for key positions, so with new players coming in things have to change. All our new upcoming flyhalfs are more dynamic. We need to lock in new depth at 15, Le Roux will not last for ever. Think this style really surprised Ireland, and that might be a big part of this. In the last WC Rassie had 4:4, 5:3, 6:2 and a 7:1 split to confuse oppositions. With some new playing styles they will increase the confusion. Rassie has two years to try new things. Keep what works, and then prepare solely for the WC.
Let the Boks have n little bit of fun with this Rugby League stile play .Isn't that wat WR wants with all the law changes. They will get it together, the team will change going to 2027 and we will loose games ,so long as Rassie gets us that hattrick in 2027 I don't care how they play. Spice it up. .You have to Agree that it makes it difficult for opponents to plan and pick players against the Boks.
It was a day on earth 2. Maybe we are in an alternate universe. AB's playing like Springboks against England and Springboks playing like AB's against Ireland.
I remember Rassie said in Chasing the Sun that they wanted to add another layer to their game but they got stopped by the COVID catastrophy. I think that is what they are working on.
Reading through the comments here I get the feeling that these two have missed the mark. In simplicity, you cannot undo our inherent strengths, we'll always be able to run over you. We have other elements of the game that will always available to be implemented where necessary. However, playing a whole new style against the number two team in the world and still never losing control of the outcome speaks volumes for the measure of progress this reflects. When we can add a new dimension to our game, the opposition will never know who they're on the field against till we open up. I would say rightly so, the global contemporaries of Rassie and co are very concerned as to what the future of Springbok rugby bodes for the rest of the world. Yes they're making rule changes because of us, and so we are pre-imminently moulding our game to mitigate those changes and remain the dominant force the rugby world hates to love. I gotta give to Rassie and crew, outstanding work!
Ireland handed SA 14 free points off 2 unusual mistakes that never happen. This is what people in SA are not seeing. Without those 2 gifted tries, the score was 13 - 20 to Ireland. As a neutral, I think SA fans seem to be really underestimating Ireland heading into this second test.
Bro is complaining about giving the already best defensive and physical team in the world an all black level attack If they pull that off the boks would be unstoppable
kiwi here. Imagine being able to have Lukhanyo Am on the bench. Kriel is on fire. And having Libbonk and Williamse on standby. And Moodie. I think the Boks actually have the best backline in the world at the moment.
Guys! Really? Rassie is building on our traditional strengths and evolving the boks. Watching that game I felt we saw glimpses of an exciting Springbok future.
175 passes is a lot better to watch than 200 tackles, its a lot less energy sapping too. Its great to watch, its what we want to see! Kurt Lee is what we want to see, not mauling all the time.
Personally, I'm very excited with what's happening. I think it would be foolishly to think the Bokke will abandon what is in their DNA. What they're doing is evolving their game, and adding another layer to our game. SA will still apply the 'Slow poison' through our pack and line out and use the extra layer to finish. Having the ability to play a more expansive game will also keep the opposition guessing what we'll bring to the game. Give them time, I'm sure the bokke will develop a game model which makes the most of our big pack and excellent set pieces and rucking and mauling, but also maximizes the skillset we have to unlock our back line.
Guys absolutely love Youse but serious kak prat here... The Springboks need to evolve cause trust me many laws will change before the next world cup ... Rassie is a genius thinking ahead ..
Kiwis are impressed looking at that Bok backline...Been waiting to see the backs unleashed for decades...you won first time...keep going, keep getting better.
This opinion piece came out of nowhere. I have never been more excited to them play like this and for other teams to neither know who we playing, but what style we playing. They will never be able to properly prepare to play against the boks. it's exciting times for me. It's time for us to unlock more potential.
@@timbaker4253 well yes but you don't have to be offloading everytime you take contact and the flyhalf doesn't have to be flat every play. I mean kolisi ran over a few Irish defenders, in fact the ref stopping the game for the one time was nonsense, we had a overlap that probably would of ended in a try if play went on.
@@steveparis5049 Keo and Zels don’t think you can play two styles and switch between the two and I tend to agree. Look at NZ for enable; they only play a running game. They can’t suddenly switch to a power game.
Well let's look at what happened in the game, we beat Ireland who we haven't for a while. If Pollard kicked like he did in the world cup and Kwagga Smith caught a high ball it would of been an easy win.
@@steveparis5049 who’s to say we wouldn’t have beaten them more comprehensively if we had used our old subdue and penetrate approach? I think we would’ve. And saying the new strategy worked because we won is missing the point that this is the first time we are playing Ireland at home for a very long time and we are expected to win at home in any event.
I did some basic maths Loftus to Kings Park = 622km* scrum going backwards at 8m/5secs (96m/ min and 5.7km/h) So, 109hrs (4.5 days). If we had carried on scrumming we'd have them safely in Durban by Thursday morning (*if they take the toll road)
Love the channel guys! To go against the grain though I like the way the Boks are looking to be more expansive but still keep a strong forward game I think could be a lethal next level threat. Keep up the great videos 👍💚
They are not reinventing the game we play. They are adding more weapons to the attack. We obviously went full balls with phase play in this game but I think we will get to a point where we will be able to play different game plans vs different teams or different conditions and can even shift between styles in game too. But to get there, we need to get comfortable playing with more dynamism on attack. Once we get to the point where we can play various styles, it would be a nightmare for opposition coaches to try analyse and prep. This is what made that NZ team from 2011-2015 so good. They were able to attack out wide and decimate teams but could also play tight and direct to win games too.
Also we created a lot of opportunities and line breaks with our new attack but weren’t clinical enough to finish and that just takes more time to get right. Once it does click, along with our strong pack, set piece and defence, we will be very hard to beat
Wow I didn't expect this reaction to the Springboks adding a new dimension whilst the rest of world is terrified at the prospect. With our dominance with the forwards to get across the gain line and giving momentum for our backline to utilize their incredible skills on attack we can become unstoppable. Our last 2 world cup wins were certainly not dominant let's be real. Give it time.
Dynasties fall due to overconfidence and a combination of the competition catching on and catching up. The Boks dont require a revolution, but certainly, an evolution that adds nuance to the skill set can only benefit them.
Don't be negative nelly's, first test of the season! New coaching staff..has Rassie ever let us down? Polly's missed pens also flattered the scoreboard.
This is probably the best video analysis I’ve seen in a long time, thank you. It was a tight game and the margin of error was small. The ref did make some calls that favoured SA which lead to crucial points on the board 👌🏿👌🏿
The Boks are much more dangerous when attacking. Changing rugby rules and possible limits to substitutes will necessitate a more open attacking game. Rassie understands these dynamics. The Boks defensive counter attacking game of the past is very dangerous resulting in 1 point victories, a relative low 60% win rate and many penalties against the Boks not to mention "ugly rugby." Rassie understands the new focus and rules necessitating a faster more open game. What is required is some personnel changes in the Bok Squad to compliment their new attacking style. Evan Roos at 8, Kwagga on the bench, Grant Williams starting with Faf or Morne on the bench, Fassi and Quin Horn eventually to replace Willie, with Jasper Wiese and Elrigh Louw coming on board. FMZ must also start or replace Pollard earlier in the Durban match. Handre Pollard is not what he used to be even when playing for Leinster Tigers this past season. The Boks looked much more in charge of the game on Saturday by adopting a more open game against Ireland than in the RWC and other "recent games" against Ireland where the Boks tried to dominate with the forwards only. The penalty count was refreshingly not negative against the Boks for the precise reason that they played a more open game. There is no reason why the Boks can't play a more expansive game for the reasons mentioned whilst still dominating in the forward exchanges. We have tons of backs with pace to spare and young mobile backrow players such as, Kolisi, Jasper Wiese, PSDT, Kwagga, Evan Roos, Elrigh Louw, JC Pretorius, Ben Jason Dixon, Ruan Venter, Milo Gumede etc..... I fully support the Boks new expansive game.
The masters of expansive Rugby , All Blacks , would love for us to play that game style come the championship - Japan , Portugal , Scotland , Aus also keenly watching.
You guys....😂😂😂the entire 2023 World Cup campaign: "what's going on, where are we going, how can you replace a hooker with a flyhalf, Deon Fourie cannot be relied on for an entire game".....we win, ohhh all hail Rassie, he knew all along. First game in 2024, "where are we going, what the he'll is Rassie thinking, this does not make sense...😂😂😂😂😂very entertaining.
175 passes. Got to start somewhere. We gonna loose some matches. Do we need to be Partient I SAY No. We have great wingers. Can our forwards support that wide? The Rule changes are an aspect too.
Keo I’ve been following you since your Business Day days. In all these years I have never agreed more with you than this analysis. Do we want to imitate the ABs? No. We love our own style and in DDA and JK we have players that 45:25 suits our style perfectly. They have developed into formidable players. Why would we discard this advantage? Question is: are we losing our focus and clarity of what brought us success? I don’t think so. I believe Rassie is trying to increase the number of arrows the Boks have - but that ‘running rugby’ will remain one of the lesser used weapons. We might play less risky this coming Saturday.
I quite like the expansive game, but they should only use that game plan when appropriate. I think for the Durban test they should go back to the old school tactics. If the boks over time can fine tune their expansive game the other teams are going to be in a world of trouble trying to prepare for what the boks might being in any given game.
Is no one concerned about our rucks? We are so exposed to jackling due to the expansive play. Players that are good around the rucks are now on the edges of the pitch ready for the expansive game
Jammer Mense, but you absolutely can do both. I refer to Nick Mallets side of 1998 that adopted a very attacking style. At the same time the defence was rock solid. So it can be done. I know we got knocked out in the semi finals but it was by a freak drop goal. It’s about time we use our speedsters out wide more often rather than just from a counter attack or up and under
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but this is kak talk. When our boks really start smashing teams with new style of play yous are gonna do a full 180 and eat your words. I look fwd to that 😂
Ireland were hanging on for much of the game, but scramble defence kept them in the game, ultimately the TMO prevented any momentum for Ireland, an even split in the 50/50 calls and Doris's try correctly awarded would have changed the dynamic of the game. Its a real killer to have decisions continually go against you.
Nah we gave them freebies, Koen's charge down try, and the Hookers' overthrow try and then we would still be in it... People have said its because the coach was resting the best players for the decider against England.
Did you even watch that game? Boks DNA? lol they played without a hint of that DNA. It was pouring rain and they were trying to run backline moves, tip passes from the forwards, fullback running kicks back. Was about as anti-Bok DNA as you can get🤣
I really enjoy your show and share similar views in most cases…, but think you guys are totally wrong on this one. Rassie won’t just hand the keys to the Bok machine to Tony Brown and sit back. I am quite excited to see how they marry up the new attacking strategy with some of the classic bok strengths in the next few games.
Never forget Rassie is willing to lose some games to prove a point, remember Wales in Bloemfontein. People are complaining we play boring Rugby, rather lose some games playing expansive this year and then we can make changes from next year if we have to.
I agree with the views on this program but the only thing I would say is that what works in the World Cup doesn’t give you consistent wins between a World Cup, i.e. you need structures and coaching to consistently beat teams which has to include a better attack than the Boks have traditionally had. The Boks style works perfectly in a high-pressure World Cup game Easier is trying to take us to the next level where we can win the in between games too.
As an Irish Fan, I'd prefer if you went back to the previous style of play but to be honest with you. I am scarred of how good SA are going to get. Even the AB's are talking about the new style. Well done SA on a good victory and great game.
Love this show but I'm confused last week Mark and Zels excited about Tony Brown and what he would bring to the party. This is not me being cynical but maybe next week explain what type of attacking game you would like Tony to focus on? Should we have employed an attack coach in the first place if we only using him to improve our counter attacking capability?
I'd go 5/3 split, Manie starts and Pollard on the bench. Roos starts and Kwagga off the bench. We need to reinvent but we shouldn't move away from our strengths especially against higher tier teams
Was great to see the Innovation. Will make a big difference to the Boks future performance. Keep up with the times guys. Ur assessment this time is totally off the mark. You DON'T have to be iether/or, that's archaic thinking. And/both is the way to go. Well done Boks can't wait to see the progress. Thnk phck you guys aren't coaching the Boks. Well done Rassie & Co😊
