@@TTM9691 Ned Beatty was seriously psychologically damaged by his role in Deliverance. Although he finished the rape scene, it was a major bug in his brain for quite a while.
Margot Kidder died at the age of 69. She suffered from Bipolar Disorder; I recall hearing that someone once found her hiding in some bushes with her clothes and hair in disarray. The coroner ruled her death a suicide by means of drug and alcohol overdose. RIP Margot Kidder
That's not entirely true. The first movie to use CGI was in 1973, and it was called Westworld. Even though it was only used for 2 minutes, it opened up a whole new method of special effects. It was still early, and Superman was released only 5 years after, so CGI wasn't exactly a practical choice for effects by then.
@@jessea4438 You know, if you're going to be pedantic then I should be a little more pedantic. Vertigo (1958) used computer graphics in its opening credits. Just abstract shapes to be sure, but that was the actual first use of computer generated imagery in film.
Why is Christopher Reeves so iconic as Superman? This is because he perfectly captures the character, both as Superman and as Clark Kent. Every other actor after him is either a stronger Superman or a stronger Clark Kent but he perfectly nailed both. If you read the comics from the golden ages (40's and 50's), you'll totally see them in Reeves excellent interpretation.
Reeve* George Reeves = 50's TV Superman Christopher Reeve = 70's/80's movie Superman There was also a Steve Reeves who played Hercules in 50's B movies and my mom would always get mixed up and say Steve Reeve when she meant Christopher Reeve. There's Keanu too, but he's pretty easy to keep straight.
I always said same thing for Michael Keaton and Batman/Bruce Wayne. He was the perfect "both". Everyone after that was either good to great at one or the other - but not both.
John Williams can basically make me cry on command with his Superman score. The sense of joy, optimism and hope it conveys is truly legendary. It IS Superman.
This was the first superhero movie that was blessed with a huge budget. And the first one to be a box office hit! For its time(1978)? It was very exciting 😊
Christopher is the GOAT. There have been various incarnations since and only one comes close, and that was Brandon Routh, who modelled his characterisation on Chris's. Such a tragic fate lay in wait for him, but that's another story. Earthy Margot Kidder was the perfect foil as Lois, and Gene Hackman luxuriated in the role of Lex Luthor. Together they defined the modern superhero genre. Haven't visited in a while. Good to see you're still in good form, but Marvel and Bat features you can keep
I never watched any of the Superman movies after the original three with Christopher Reeve. But one day I was watching the Hallmark movie, "The Nine Kittens of Christmas" and saw Brandon Routh (who played fireman Zachary Stone). The first moment I saw him I said, "He'd make a great Superman", not knowing at the time that he already played Superman!
Well they're the same Superman/Clark in the same continuity, so ofc Brandon had to model his characterization on Christopher's Superman. When he played Kingdom Come Superman later, that one was also the same Superman.
As much as I do enjoy Man of Steel this film will always be the best introduction to Superman for people unaware of his origin and backstory. Man of Steel assumes you already know a good amount of Clarks origin so it skips alot of what you see in this film. It doesn't destroy you're viewing of Man of Steel but you will leave with alot of questions that are answered by watching Superman (1978) and it's sequel. I guess Man of Steel is similar Batman 1989 a film that assumes you already know the origins of Batman as in 1989 Batman's origin was pretty common knowledge. While Batman Begins is more friendly for people unaware of Batman as a character. *Christopher Reeve Superman:* Superman *1978* Superman 2 *1980 Superman '78 *2022* - Comic Book Series se in the same same continuity with the likenesses of the actors. Superman Returns *2006* - Set in the same continuity, Everyone is recast, Superman is played by Brandon Routh. *DCEU Henry Cavill Superman:* Man of Steel *2013* Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice *2016* - Yes they did a Batman v Superman movie after a single Superman film and without a solo Batman film.... "I feel like Martha is such a normal name of moms in all old movies." Many names experience a peak in popularity in certain years and decades, so some names are much more common, often seeming typical, of a particular generation. According to the US Social Security Administration, it was most popular in the 1920s ranking 23rd of female given names. By the 1980s, it fell below 200th. Other charts on the internet show it was most popular during the 1800s, but during the 20th century, it peaked in popularity in 1938, the year Superman was first published.
This somehow makes the BvS Martha scene seem even stupider than before. "Martha!" "That's my mom's name too, best friends?" "Sure, but isn't everyone's mom named Martha?"
Long before superhero movies today, we had this. I saw it 3 times in the cinema, its still magic. Casting Reeve was done because they wanted an unknown actor to be in the role, other big stars of the 70's, including Clint Eastwood, were considered but that would have meant audiences would identify with the star rather than his character. Reeve was just perfect, so was Kidder. RIP both of them, shame they've gone but with this movie, they're immortal. BTW, 6.42 the couple on the train were Superman & Lois back in I think, the 50's.
A spoof, at the time of it's release, in "Mad Magazine" had toddler "Clark" lifting the truck, then in the next frame, "Pa Kent" had toddler "Clark" pulling a plow at super speed.
I don't know what the kid who played Superman as a baby got paid, but Marlon Brando got paid an insane amount for that little bit of screen time playing his father. I still get a laugh from the idea that if you reverse the Earth's rotation, you also reverse time.
In the begining of the movie when young Clark is running past the train, a little girl is watching him through binoculars. The Woman sitting next to that little girl is Noel Neill, she played the original Lois Lane in the superman movies of the 0940s-1950, as well as in the 1950s TV show. Jor El was played my Marlon Brando who was Don Corleone in "The Godfather"
Glad to see you reacting to such an awesome movie. But some odd edits - no reaction to the first shot of him in the suit and him flying out of the fortress? No Air Force One save, no bus save? :(
There re some big Hollywood Stars from old days and new in 1978 that participated in this movie....Marlon Brando, Glenn Ford, Jackie Cooper, Ned Beatty, Gene Hackman, Margo Kidder, Valerie Perrine, and Kirk Alyn, who was an American actor, best known for being the first actor to play the DC Comics character Superman in live-action for the 1948 movie serial.
Looking forward to watching your reaction to this classic. Part 2 in that Superman saga is even better than the 1st. Please react to that one, as well. You are so gorgeous beyond belief. Hope you're enjoying your vacay!
@darktitan6308 Yeah, that's why they had to do a recut of the second one, lol. Even at 11, I thought the second one was lame, get some taste, manboy. They laugh at people like you, all the way to the bank.
"Star Wars vibes" seems to be a common phrase used by the young kids today who watch this for the first time and it's certainly not a bad thing. It was the late 1970s when movies got fun again.
You're too young to really get this one. But imagine way the hell back in 1978... this movie was revolutionary. And the golly gee tone was straight from his first run of comics back in the 50s. If you had never seen any modern movie before this, you would be more impressed. I was a kid in the 90s, before Marvel... and I loved this movie. Every little boy wanted to be Superman.
@@TTM9691 ugh... really? You read my comment and took it as condescending? You need therapy. Now that's condescending... see the difference? Lighten up Melody, geez. 😘
@@nigelmcphearson "You're too young to get this one", yeah, dummy, that's condescending, especially to a reactor who has done other movies from the 70s and had no problem with them. This isn't "Carnal Knowledge" or a John Cassavettes movie, this is dopey "Superman", ok?
The DC Animated Universe (DCAU, also referred to as the Timmverse or Diniverse by fans) ranks very high on quality story telling. Batman: The Animated Series (1992 - 1995) Superman: The Animated Series (1996 - 2000) The New Batman Adventures (1997 - 1999) Justice League (2001 - 2004) Justice League Unlimited (2004 - 2006) Also some animated feature films
you have star wars vibes at the beginning because the composer of the movie theme is John William, which also made the score of star wars, e.t., indiana jones, jurassic park and other famous movies.
Ben Affleck, Adrian Brody "Hollywoodland", true story of how superman became part of pop culture, it is slow but interesting to see the story done in a film noir
I think the greatest value in this movie is the snapshot it gives of the time it was made. It says a lot about the people, culture, and values of the time period.
It's not the glasses, girl, this is why Christopher Reeve was the best Superman, his speech changed, his demeanor, his way of walking. While he is Superman, he becomes a different character all together, the glasses help finish the overall, but they not all that changes Clark Kent into Superman.
it's not just the glasses. you saw how clark was acting: goofy, bumbling, uncorodinated, and meek. a good natured reporter who came from the sticks. no one would ever believe that he's a god among men. the same way no one would believe a dim-witted billionare playboy would dress like a bat and beat up criminals on a nightly basis. "clark kent is who i am. superman is just what i can do."
There are two scenes in the second one that totally worth watching just to see them. You won't have any problem know them when you see them. Always enjoy your reaction / reviews. As we say here in Texas; Y'all be safe.
(Wai till she puts together the fact that Bruce Wayne's mom was ALSO Martha (so was the Mother of our country) that "LL" are common initials in Superman and Action comics "Lex Luther, Lois Lane, and Lana Lang, etc)
This was the archetype movie that launched the modern Superhero films. I heard that Marvel has their people watch the film before each one of the studio’s movies are made.
Was the "Oh Dam!" at 23:33 intentional? Because it mad me laugh. :) Christopher Reeve, was the OG Superman when I was a kid. Nice to see this getting some reactions. :) Batman's mom was Martha too. :)
Superman dont travel in time. He turns time back. Nice reaction. The 70's sure was a diffrent time. Stealing kisses and slapping kids were not problematic but done for fun.
Reeve will always be "my' Superman. I truly mourned his passing. Henry Cavil was great, too though. Superman was always my favorite super hero. This movie came out when I was a kid (like 8) and I was hooked on Superman ever since. I don't care nearly as much for Marvel and especially less now with the direction it's taken with Disney as its owner.
Lmao! I just asked my sister two days ago if she had seen Godfather, she hasn't. Her health aide hasn't either. You haven't, but you're a youngin so you have an excuse😂, but you need to watch it asap, classic movie!
I love they show just how powerful this Superman is by the fact that he can reverse time. The Flash can manipulate time but not as fast as this Superman.
Man i forget what movies were like in the late seventies and eighties until something like the off scream slap happens and people react so vehemently. BTW the warden was Alan Kirk the first man to play live action Superman even before George Revees.
PS: Even when I was 9, I was like...."are they just rehashing the Star Wars theme?" Lol. John Williams made a career out of rewriting that theme. He did "Close Encounters", which was a super iconic, amazingly original score. And then he just rehashed the "Star Wars" theme for "Superman", and Indiana Jones, lol. (It's all Mahler rip-off, not that 90% of the dopes who tell you he's the greatest film composer ever would know, lol)
Did anyone else get a commercial telling you how to poop better? Marlon Brando, shows up for 1 week, gets 7 million dollars. Chris Reeve was 6' 4", Henry Cavill 6' 1"
While the modern interpretation of Metropolis is that of a 'bright' New York... the original comic book Metropolis was modeled on Toronto, the city where the original artist and co-creator of the character was from. The Daily Planet was a play on the Toronto Daily Star. Also, this is a far more consistent portrayal of the character with how he's appeared in the comics from the Silver age through current era. Not a knock on Cavil, but the modern take isn't all that much like the comic book version.
@Omar Scarborough: She ( Centane ) probably doesn't/wouldn't know who ( the late ) Larry Hagman was. He was, of course, of "I Dream of Jeannie" ( 1965 - 1970 ) fame ( playing a comedic good guy - astronaut "Tony Nelson;" ) and then of "Dallas" ( 1978 - 1991 ) fame ( playing a totally opposite character - ruthless oil baron "J.R. Ewing." )
Before 85 superman was almost God level in power, that's this verson of Superman, in 85 D.C. comics had what was called crisis on infinite earth's, and it really depowered superman, other than kryptonite superman is vulnerable to magic
Centane finds superman boring, I for one am the complete opposite I find him the most exciting. The reasoning is because you can actually believe his powers exist because he's an alien. Unlike a heroine like Batman, who can survive anything and yet he's just a human - a rich business kid...he should have died a million times. Probably the same reason I love Bond movies, yet hate the opening ten minute scenes which show 007 as invincible.
I LOVE comments like these. A fresh breathe of a good discussion, I am so happy you like Superman ❤️ I only liked the comics, never really liked him in the movie universe sadly, same with many batman movies and some portrays of Harley Quinn (she's greater in the games and comics) 🤍 I've only seen one 007 movie, that is the most recent one sadly, but guessing it's not too late to watch some others? 👀
have you ever watched 'Smallville'....I think you might like.... I used to find Superman really boring too, but then I realized the coolest thing about him is the stuff he DOESN'T do....I mean, he could just take/have anything...He could rule the planet...but he stays doing good and constantly resisting so much temptation...
Its always funny to me when people say "Superman is boring" when literally every superhero just ripped him off. Thor is just Space Viking Superman, Batman is just Superman in black without powers. Iron man ripped off Batman. Superman is the OG superhero because he has no defined limits and only strives to do the right thing because its the right thing. It doesn't weigh us down with lengthy internal monologues whining about dead parents or grousing about being a bullied dweeb or a freak or a monster. This movie is from 1974 so it does show its age but its a reflection of the 1950's Silver Age version of Superman.
I've always held the view that Reeve is still the best portrayal of the Superman character. The scene in Lois's flat shows that. When he straightened his back to tell, his voice changed. That was him being normal, confident and assuring. Clark Kent is his mask, the persona that is clumsy and unsure. And yes, Lois doesn't even not the resemblance because most men are never noticed. Its a shame this lady wasn't bothered about the character or the movie, so why react to it if you find Superman, the oldest of superhero genre, boring?
Man of Steele was a good take on the story. Especially the fights between the Kryptonians. Makes Superman II look like a joke. But the beard. I mean, how is he shaving that thing?
I've seen exactly one superhero movie in my whole life and it was this one at the theater when it came out. Loved it. But the only reason I went to see it was because I was simply curious about how Hollywood would do an entire movie about a comic book hero. I was never into comic books as a kid and still not into the superhero genre as a grown-up today. I must admit, I don't get the appeal. But if people like it, I guess they just like it. Favorite line of the movie, "My attorney..." 20:33.
Agreed 100%. Back in the 70s, half of us wanted to grow up, there was a global party going in with music and movies and the world was not filled with a populace that had the taste of 10 year old little boys, it's been pathetic ever since. But yeah, it was fun seeing this in '78. Thought the sequel sucked and never saw another superhero movie until "Batman" '89, which I thought REALLY sucked! (and, like every one ever since, took it's cues from this movie: origin story, stunt casting of villains, etc)
@@TTM9691 Thank goodness! For a while, I thought I was the only one who felt this way. Once I turned 16 and got my learners permit, my bicycle wasn't the only thing I put down. There were a lot of things I just wasn't interested in anymore.
Yes, Man of Steel. As opposed to the pulp hero he is based on. Clark Savage, Jr AKA Doc Savage AKA The Man of Bronze. Whose Fortress of Solitude IS at the North Pole, as it happens.
Up until this point Superman was just a cartoon character. Iconic, but for kids. I suspect it's this movie that means you can watch the Dc versus MCU battle today. It just wouldn't be there without it. And it's completely random. It might never have happened at all.
Word of advice.... Ur mic volume is always a lot higher than the movie volume. A little tough when 👂 ng with headphones. Other wise a lot of fun seeing ur reactions. Keep up the good work.
you should watch the director cut ,it has a lot more the scene where the teenager superman is running along side the train and the child looking out with her binoculars is louis lane, her parents in the train beside her is from the 40s and 50s superman where they played superman and Louis lane respectively. in the dc universe metropolis is new new York city and in the the marvel new new York city. there 2 delated version of superman the tv version is a lot longer. superman 2 again two different versions the theatrical release, and the Richard Donner version the later more darker. am pushing 54 ,so obviously you weren't even born when it came out in 1978..maybe your parents were born then .😂 but although Henry cavill did a brilliant superman. the late Christopher Reeves will always be superman. the other ones superman 3 watchable but 4 the quest for peace is not that good tbh.
Yeah, these movies are from a different era where people were different and our attention span was longer. Now I'm sure it's harder for those conditioned by current society and how films are made to feed and force action/activity every minute to keep interested would have a hard time appreciating this. Kudus to her for at least trying and being honest in her reaction. We as consumers don't have to agree or like the reaction necessarily but i can appreciate its authenticity
Gee, can you be even more condescending? Lots of reactors her age have dug this movie, she just didn't have the same reaction! Just like back in '78! If you have to start babbling such drivel, "Rebuilt", you're probably getting a little long in the tooth for reaction channels, know what I mean, old timer? I'm embarrassed for you, lol.
You should really watch the second one. Much like Rocky 2, Its basically a continuation of the story of the first movie but is much better. Although Rocky 1 is infinitely better than Superman 1. 3rd one is ok, but mostly meh. 2 was definitely one of my childhood favorite movies along with Clash of the Titans and Star Wars ofc.
This is my favourite superhero movie of all time. Sure, the effects are dated and the story is pretty simple and silly in some respects, but few superhero movies come close to this one in terms of heart, charm, and wholesomeness. Also, few actors come close to embodying a superhero as much as Christopher Reeve in this film. As awesome a film as _The Dark Night_ is (it's another one of my favourites), Christian Bale did not nail his performance as Batman the way that Chris Reeve nailed his as Superman.
The single greatest shot in this film is when Superman drops Lois off on her balcony and flies away, and in one long, uninterrupted shot, she turns, walks through the apartment, answers the door where Clark is waiting. Pure movie magic!
Christopher Reeve is the only true Superman. This movie was beyond epic when it came out. Immediately had a huge crush on Christopher Reeve. Reeve is the only one who captured the essence of both Superman and Clark Kent abd made it believable that no one recognized they were the same person. It's his incomparable use of vocal tone and posture that's shown in the one scene in Lois' apartment.
24:22 This scene is so iconic and important. Clark "hears" both of his fathers speaking to him. One representing his mind (logic) and the other his heart (emotions). Clark's humanity wins out.
I'm Brazilian and SUPERMAN the movie (1978) for me is the best superhero movie of all time! I watched it at the cinema when I was a child and I still feel like a child today and I am enchanted by the action scenes and special effects! For me it will always be a wonderful and untouchable classic.
That scene where Christopher Reeve as Clark takes off his glasses and becomes Superman, even seeming to grow a few inches, is one of my favorite moments in all of film. The tagline for the film was "You'll Believe a Man Can Fly". It should have been "You'll believe people can look at Clark Kent and not think he's Superman".
@@dr.burtgummerfan439 yeah. Cavill's Clark was just Superman with glasses. In fact, of all the actors who played Superman, Reeve was the only one to create two separate characters.
@@richardb6260 True, but that doesn’t take away from Brandon Routh’s Clark and Superman. With a better story and better direction, Kevin Spacey could also have been the best Lex Luthor, imo.
I saw this movie in theaters when I was 14 in 1978. I collected the comic books and couldn’t wait until it came out. There was a lot of press leading up to its release. Chris Reeve will always be the epitome of Superman. Fun fact: The older lady on the train is actress Noel Neal who played Lois Lane on the 1950s TV series The Adventures Of Superman. 😊
