What were they thinking?? By this time, Maureen had evolved into GUIDING LIGHT'S new Bert, and she could have remained the show's beloved 'moral center' character for years... but they killed her off! The damage to the show continues to this day.
This was handled so badly Maureen was like the heart of the show everyone came to her kitchen for advice and comfort. Ellen Parker.was wonderful. Jill Farren Phelps ruined this show like she did every show she touches.
I was 13 when this aired and 18 years later I am still in shock over the executive's at GL's decision to kill such a beloved character. The storyline would have been better if Maureen didn't die and she turned to Roger for comfort and slept with him to get back at Ed. Could you just imagine his reaction lol.
I love when Maureen tells Ed that "we've been here before, and that's what makes this so stupid. That we should be here again." After cheating on Maureen with Claire in the 80's, Ed couldn't have thought that Maureen would take him back after stepping out on her AGAIN--and with her best friend Lillian to boot!

His Father was a Drunk, he married leslie and was horrible to her, then Holly more out of her neediness, then Rita who was too materialistic, then when he finally gets it right with Maureen he cheats on her twice, raises Claire's Daughter Michelle like it was her own then she dies.
Actress Ellen Parker who played Maureen got her revenge when she won a daytime emmy for that heartbreaking scene! That right there proves she was loved by the fans as well as talented. I know that Ellen Wheeler has been given the black and labled worst producer on GL, but what about JFP, John conboy and Paul Rauch? They sucked too. Why should they get a free pass. The problems on the show orginated with them fools!
John Conboy was GL'S worst EP overall. He started out pretty good with Millee Taggert as Headwriter, but he got rid of her and hired a writer nobody had ever heard of. I thought that his era of GL was the end of GL. The other producers you mentioned had some really good aspects to their tenures, but some slightly bad aspects of their time as EP.
I think the reason Maureen's death heart so much because it was pointless. Bellowed characters were killed off on other shows and fans accepted it because there was a purpose to it, like pairing the other half of the couple with someone else. there was no point to killing Maureen. Ed was with Eve briefly and Peter Simon left shortly after. At least the show could have given Ed a new love interest, Ed and Holly were great together. But show did nothing. And they wonder why GL got canceled...
I watched GL and invested every free moment, my summer vacations in the 70s, still have all my vhs recordings from the 80s and 90s. GL was my everything to me, but this storyline haunts me to this day. .the best thing they did was bring Roger Thor pe back, the worst thing wS killing Maureen Bauer and her friendship with Lillian. I still cry watching these scenes. So unnessassary!
Peter Simon left soon after this aired BECAUSE JFP chose to kill Maureen and destroy the character of Ed. Ed would NEVER have cheated on Maureen....especially after the Claire incident when Maureen adopted Michelle. They were the one couple on soaps that you tied your anchor to because they truly loved each other......I never really cared for GL after this....I kept up with it to see what was going on but didn't go out of my way to watch it.
Peter Simon wasn't playing Ed during the Claire storyline, I doubt he would have much of an opinion about it. He objected to this storyline because he thought they had chickened out and had given no justification as to why Ed cheated, he did it and it was just a plot point facilitate the story. Soon after they chickened out and realized their mistake, the show abruptly changed course and Ed was immediately thrown into a romance with Eve Guthrie. Then she died as well. 🤷♂️
Actually, Peter Simon wanted the affair to happen. I read it in a soap magazine but I don’t think he agreed with killing of the Maureen character. He actually stayed on the show 2 more years after this. I didn’t mind him with Eve - she needed to be reformed, he could not be Holly due to her attachment to Roger and fans never would have accepted him with Lillian.
Another sad "leaving" was on The UK Soap Opera Emmerdale when Susan "Honey" Mitchell left her husband Billy for having an affair. Emma Barton & Perry Fenwick (Billy) really gave their all in this scene, she cried and left in a Taxi that alot of Soap Characters do when they leave a show and Billy cried like a Baby. They have to Children, Will and Janet who has Down's Syndrome.
Jfp acknowledge that she phucked up firing this woman. But I love how Maureen went out guns a blazing She was angry and hell had nothing on this woman. But it is also sad that she left hurt and humiliated. We loved Maureen
Then Kim Hughes has to deal with her husband Bob Hughes having an affair with his associate Dr. susan stewart. You would have thought Ed would have remembered how he felt when holly cheated on him with roger thorpe or when his father bill had an affair with his secretary maggie.
