Knowing you own dogs, there's a relatable fact about Romans, ancient Romans also loved their dogs as members of their family just like we did, there are still graves in Rome today where owners had written how much they missed their dogs. If you're ever bored there's plenty of them to Google and read, they're pretty touching tributes to dogs.

"Are you not entertained?" Fun Fact: After Maximus shouts that line in the Zucchabar scene, you can see a crew member in jeans and a white t-shirt in the stands on the extreme left. Genuinely Merciful Fact: Joaquin Phoenix ad-libbed his "Am I not merciful?" scream. Connie Nielsen wasn't expecting it, and her frightened reaction was genuine. Home Sweet Home Fact: Maximus' description of his home (specifically, how the kitchen is arranged and smells in the morning and at night) was ad-libbed. It's a description of Russell Crowe's own home in Australia. Heartbreaking Fact: Oliver Reed died three weeks before principal photography ended. Because Proximo was considered a key character, a clause in the movie's insurance contract would have allowed the filmmakers to re-shoot all of Reed's scenes with another actor at the insurer's expense, about $25 million. However, most of the actors and crew were exhausted from the punishing schedule, and Ridley Scott did not want to cut Reed from the movie. The script was rewritten, and a body double and CGI were used to give Reed's character a plausible resolution.

Zucchabar was a Roman province in northern Algeria. One of the great achievements of the Roman Empire was integration: the lands they conquered were integrated into Roman culture quite easily, with local customs and such either adapting to what the Romans brought, or the Roman settlers adapting to the locals. That wig the eyebrow dude put on, the style was called the anastole, very popular at the time.

I'm a straight man but I wish I knew what it was like to watch Maximus in this movie as a woman. I mean, he's the perfect archetype of a masculine man.

The Roman Empire was the longest unbroken government in history, lasting from 753 BC to 1453 AD, over 2200 years. It shaped the history of Europe and the world perhaps more than any other nation ever did. It held a larger percentage of the world population than China does today. It took more than a thousand years for Europe's population to reach that population again. A million people lived within the city of Rome itself which was not passed again in Europe until the 1800's. The late Roman capital city of Constantinople is the most besieged city in history, its massive Theodosian Walls (which still exist today, look them up on Google they're pretty cool) were virtually impenetrable, no siege was ever able to take the city until 1453 when the Ottomans finally conquered the city and ended the empire. The last Roman Emperor put on a soldier's armor and died anonymously fighting for the city with his men. Rome is one of the most interesting pieces of history I think.
@beefi411
@beefi411 5 месяцев назад
But this most generous interpretation of the duration of the Roman Empire sounds more like a marketing campaign for the Roman Empire than a meaningful factual statement about the Roman Empire. One would never simply talk about the Roman Empire lasting 2,200 years and would count completely undifferentiatedly from the beginning of the Roman royal period to the last Byzantine emperor.
@DeclinedMercy

You were laughing about the subtitles labelling the song "Woman singing in foreign language," which is funny on it's face. But the song is sung by Lisa Gerrard, and she sings in a made-up language of her own making, so I think they were left with the choice of labelling it a foreign language, or a "fictional language," and the latter would've been immersion breaking so they chose the former.

It's funny that the composer used similar versions of the song he composed for this film for Pirates of the caribbean and The Rock. Since he works in so many films he probably doesn't have time to start from scratch in every film, so I imagine he sometimes takes works he has already written as a base and modifies them for new films. Still, given that both Gladiator and Pirates of the caribbean are so well known and the music is so similar it is funny. But this was originally Gladiator's song.

That's a copout excuse to make for him. The job is to compose music custom designed for the film, and they make a healthy paycheck for it. John Williams scored shitloads of films, but always came up with unique themes for each film . Can you imagine Williams using the Empire theme from "The Empire Strikes Back" in another film?
@MrDevintcoleman
@MrDevintcoleman Год назад
I haven’t found it explicitly stated but it’s my firm belief that a lot of that opening track, while it absolutely has Pirates vibes, (even though it came out before Pirates) the time signature, instrumentation, and chord progressions feel heavily influenced by Mars from Suite of the Planets by Holst. To be clear, that’s not a criticism of Zimmer. Not enough people understand that art inspired by, or influenced by, other art isn’t cheating, it’s homage.
@MrDevintcoleman
@MrDevintcoleman Год назад
@@DMichaelAtLarge your timeline is off, but that’s very understandable. Gladiator came out in 2000, with Zimmer as the composer. The first Pirates movie came out in 2003, with Klaus Badelt and Geoff Zanelli as the composers. Zimmer took over as composer for Pirates for the second movie, released in 2006. So, if we’re going to accuse anyone of anything, Badelt was inspired by Zimmer’s score for Gladiator, used it as inspiration for creating the Pirates theme, then when Zimmer took over in 2006 he continued using the theme that Badelt had established, which was likely directly inspired by Zimmer!

Very right about the small dagger being used by hitmen in antiquity. In fact the name of the dagger in Latin was Sica, from which the Spanish word for hitman, Sicario, comes. It was used by Jewish rebels against the invading Romans who called them precisely Sicarii. They were part of the Jewish sect there Zealots, from which the word jealous derives, as they guarded their religious practices with religious zeal (jealous comes zealous in Latin). Also Judas the Iscariot is said to get his name Iscariot from here, while other sources mention the historical Jesus was also a guerrilla fighter Zealot.

the line about the frost is so great, cause hes making a jab at a guy who doesnt really do much fighting and is there more for intimidation and decoration. cause any soldier worth his salt that had been fighting in that area for months wouldnt have to be told that. an actual soldier would have made sure to prepare their weapons for use.

Bit late to this party but the boy, Lucius, mentions to Maximus that he is named after his father. His inclusion in the film is a cool acknowledgement to the fact that for the first 9 years of his reign Marcus Aurelius did not rule the Empire alone, the Roman Empire actually had two Emperors: Marcus Aurelius and his younger colleague, Lucius Verus who died in 169AD, leaving Marcus to assume full rule over the Empire. After Marcus Aurelius, the idea of two Co-Emperors would increasingly become the norm rather the exception before Emperor Theodosius the Great divided the Empire in two halves between his sons upon his death in January 395.

This is a historical film, but it's nothing of an historical documentary at all.I understood that Maximus said he lived in Trujillo or Turgalium (its name in those times), that's why they call him 'Spaniard' (though Spain didn't exist yet, it was called Hispania and the city of Turgalium was in the province of Lusitania. From that place they took Maximus to the province of Zucchabar (today Mauritania, in Africa). 150 days are five months. Olympic Games last about 16 or 17 days. I think Commodo's lower lip shivers just from anger. He knows he must let Maximus live, for the moment, but he hates him so much... That ending reminds us that even the greatest warriors died

I’m sorry, but the Les Mis movie was an absolute travesty, and Russel Crowe was the worst part of it 🤷‍♀️ The reason “theater kids” got so up in arms is that Les Mis is a freaking SUNG THROUGH musical. When you have a musical like that, the acting is shown THROUGH the singing. For people who are actually good at singing and acting, there are ways to convey intense, strong emotion without sacrificing vocal quality. They should have hired actual musical theater performers instead of actors who could maybe kinda sing. I watched it once, I will never watch it again because it actually offends me personally as a professional musical theater actress. The only movie musical worse than that waste of film is Cats.
