Joaquin Phoenix was sooo convincing as an immoral emperor, it made me believe it was very possible they were like that. Russell Crowe was perfect for that part because he displayed a realistic General who didn't have to be monstrously big, and extremely fast but had masterful skill and knew how to be a leader with humility.

These days a lot of people dismiss what's referred to as toxic masculinity as woke or basically bad or sissy or pussy in ways that aren't well articulated or argued. The Marcus Aurelius/Commodus patricide scene illustrated perfectly. The entire entire life of Commodus as depicted illustrates it perfectly. He's acting out a role. He understands nothing about virtues and behaves accordingly. Maximus on the other hand. husband father faithful friend loyal soldier. In the end, he gives his life to put Rome back on the track of Republican democracy rather than empire, which, of course never happened. The movie works well for people who don't even give a damn about themes, morality, and meaning because the visuals are so splendid and spectacular and the fighting is suspenseful and gripping.

It’s as if some people just make up shit in their head sometimes and think it goes or speaks for everyone. You just made it sound like all anyone watches something like Gladiator for is the action, fight or battle sequences, visuals, music. Sure those are loved aspects of it. Yet there are people who also understand the complex characters, their relationships, emotions, and motivations, and the deeper themes as well. Plus who praise the actors performances, as well as the action, and tale of the lead character or hero who seeks vengeance and justice.

The meaning of the thumb down is still debated actually. Some experts think it could mean "sheath your sword", which is actually the opposite of death. The point is there are no such an amount of historical references to tell.
@The_Striped_Panther_edits

I think sheath your sword makes more sense tbh because a thumbs up shows the approval of the King which logically makes sense as the King wanting the Gladiator to finish off the other Gladiator

no there was a script but it wasn't actually finished because the original screenwriter (The guy in the video, David Franzoni) pulled out for some reason. He only completed about 20 pages, the rest was filled in with Ridley, Russell and a mix of other screenwriters from all over the world.

Seems to me the motivation of going back home (with family alive) would have been more powerful in terms of universal theme than vengeance. The possible love relationship btw Maximus and Lucilla is the less interesting relationship, so that alone wouldn't have justified the switch from going home to vengeance. But then we would have lost the powerful scene of discovering the bodies and losing everything... Creation is just about making choices and there are 10 potential stories behind the one we see.

im guessing this must be a reference to the ukraine-russia conflict? if so i do agree, don't get me wrong the ukraines had suffered so much and the war had made many ukrainian civilians and soldiers homeless and without home, i hope they do prevail through the conflict, but the media glorifies the imagery of war where they would have many reports of so many russian vehicles/soldiers loosing their lives and without even the slightest sincerity sometimes, not only that, they would describe "most" russians as blood thirsty war mongers (they do not say that directly, but they heavily imply it) im not a ukrainian or russian, im a Filipino and i can only say my opinion/view on the matter. when it comes to which side im routing id say im routing for none, though i do feel sympathy to the ukrainian civilians who lost their homes and just wants the war to be over, theres also those misfortunate enough to be tortured to death because the torturers are blinded and defeaned by their rage that the gore and screams they inflict sound like nothing to them

It’s because they went into filming without a complete script, and they were still working on things, and coming up with ideas in the story as it was going. He also said he didn’t think some things were interesting for the movie or story to focus on.
@danmosley4387
@danmosley4387 14 дней назад
@@Katie-j8w Yes I agree. I think it was the lack of a codified script the made the movie so great. Let me explain. Actors were able to contribute lines to the movie that fit their character. Their are scores of films that used the talent of the actors to make a better script. Lord of the Rings, Iron man and a lot of other examples exist. Russell's opinion was much different after the project got underway.
@Katie-j8w
@Katie-j8w 14 дней назад
@@danmosley4387 well people really shouldn’t just say “he called it shit at first” without a deeper explanation, especially for those who don’t understand why he said that. I do. It really just makes it sound like it’s just criticizing and hating on him, or trying to make Russell Crowe look bad again. He was a huge and integral part of coming up with ideas, and improving the story that went on to be so loved and winning Academy Awards, along with director, Ridley Scott, plus the whole casts great performances. Russell Crowe even talked about how he wished more attention would go to some of the other actors too, even though Gladiator is also about Maximus’s journey. Going from Roman General to seeking justice and vengeance against Commodus for ordering the murder of his wife and son, and his corruption. Commodus is also a very interesting character, which Joaquin Phoenix portrayed him amazingly of course as well! Not only as a villain or antagonist of the story, but because he was also jealous of Maximus and the love his father had for him, and his feelings that his own father didn’t care about him and wanted Maximus to take his place and all that. Back to Russell Crowe’s initial feelings on the script, well that’s what he felt reading it. Not everyone has to love everything, and maybe it’s because it actually wasn’t as good, but still had potential. They still did it and went into it, even though there wasn’t a complete script again, and the story in fact did need work and improvement. That’s it. He’s right that there didn’t need to be a huge focus on the gladiators and chariot riders getting endorsements for olive oil for one example, and stuff like that. I’ve seen other stories set in Ancient Rome, and they have been made focusing on different aspects and sides of the history. Such as the recent Peacock series, Those About to Die.

Death in Roman times was all around. Life expectancy was low. Disease was rampant. Rules and laws were different with public executions. And everyone believed in the after life. Death was normal. It was seen everyday. Not like now where it’s all hidden and feared. It’s not such a big jump to see sport having that extra layer. As life (and death) in those times had that extra layer.
