I noticed the condemned soldiers marched in step with the guards as they approached their place of execution. Even as they were being marched to their deaths by order of the same man they swore to serve, they continued to maintain the decorum of nothing but loyal Roman soldiers. It's a nice touch to the scene.

@mickthenick1
@mickthenick1 8 лет назад
Maybe for the 1st of 2nd time, the command "loose" or "release" would have detracted spectators from this scene. It is some kind of sophism that is not apt in the emotionality of the scene. The present-day word "Fire!" perfectly captures the meaning of what Quintus had to say at that given moment. I think it was a wise decision to let him say "Fire!" rather than "Release!". By the way, Quintus, Commodus and the lot should have spoken ancient Latin rather than English. I did not hear you complain about that.

The drama of this scene is diminished somewhat by the fact that Quintus orders the archers to "fire" when he should have said "loose" or "shoot". It stands out and takes me out of the movie a bit. Even before I looked up the proper term, "fire" just felt wrong. This is especially surprising because they correctly use "loose" for the archers and catapults in the opening battle scene.

I think that maybe they keept this scene out because for one it doesn't really do anything for the story, all it does is really make you hate commodus a lot more which wouldn't of been something that the director would of wanted as he always emphasized that he never wanted people to fully hate commodus or look at him as a full on villian. He always wanted people's emotions to be split between hating his actions but at the same time also being able to feel some emotion towards him. This scene would of totally killed that, he's too brutal here. Plus the scene itself isn't really all that good anyway.

He would not have given the command to "fire". That command was used to dip the treated arrows into the firepots. The command instead would've been "release", to release the arrows. Alternatively, some armies used the term "loose". I understand that "fire" is more readily known by general audiences; however, I know no one that would be confused by the General issuing the correct command. This isn't the same as expecting them to use their original language, either. We're talking about English words - words that both the actors and the audience already know. Even in films that focus more on the spectacle than the reality, the terms "loose" or "release" are often used. This isn't something that should only be seen in "realistic" films.

Great scene but in the end it needed to go "Less is more". What most film viewers don't know is beating a dead horse with points like this guy is evil are already very clear, and what makes Joaquin's characters so dam fascinating is we very small snippets of his character fleshed out throughout the film. This gives him more depth vs a 3 hour film of him being evil. Less is more. He mentions it once as they say "They lied to me in Germania" and this is all that needs to be said to understand his what is going on in his mind. Also mentioned is how this would have explained why Quintus didn't help him in the end duel. It was very clear to me when he stabs Maximus in the back and tells Quintus to hide the wound. It plays right in line with his Relationship with Maximus as well whos motto has always been "Strength and Honor" This scene has nothing to do with the relationship he has with Maximus (Which isn't a bad thing) but just another reason it really dose not fit in the final cut and makes the cut as good as it is. And if you still somehow feel my view is invalid id like to remind you Oliver Reed died before large amounts of his scenes were finished, he had a lot of dialog and it was him and not Juba who would burry the family figures in the sand. This also played out in the most poetic scenes of "Less is more" with Maximus saying an amazing line "Are you in danger of becoming a good person" and Reed laughs it off. One line...

"GUARD THE LADY HAS FINISHED WITH ME" I think that was very presumptuous of him, She was probably thinking,"I should check out his blood pressure, maybe his hydraulic fluids need to be drained and replenished.

I can totally see why they cut this. A Praetorian would not have thought twice about it and surely would not have gotten emotional, especially in front of the emperor

Execution with bows in the roman era? The order to launch the arrows would certainly not be "fire" Lol! Classic movie and great acting otherwise

They wouldn't have spoken English. "Shoot" and "fire" and synonymous in modern English
@GumaroRVillamil
@GumaroRVillamil 4 года назад
@@cjcanton9121 they're synonymous when using guns. It doesn't make sense when using a bow. It's like saying "hit the gas" when riding a horse. I mean sure, it gets the meaning across, but we have different words for different things for a reason

The ad for Ray Liotta and Chantix that leads off this clip is as creepy as the Emperor played by Joaquin Phoenix

For a movie lacking a lot of historical accuracy (which is fine) they did show the difficulty of holding a fully drawn bow, which most films never even mention

I can understand why this scene was cut. An execution would not have happened this way in Rome and when Quintus says "fire" that also would not have happened (no guns available for quite some time).

Yes, drives me bananas, especially as this movie was made after "Braveheart" which used the more realistic "loose."
@BigBoss215-02
@BigBoss215-02 7 лет назад
Edel Ortega it's funny because earlier in the movie they use the correct term loose. the scene when the legion is fighting the Germanic tribes.

@fifthof "loose"versus "Fire" the arrows and command minor point its reminds me of the hard consonant argument of (K) Kaesar versus (S) Caesar. we will never really know when Charlemagne ( 800 AD ) took over the the Holy Roman Empires use of Latin, Latin became infected with lots MORE hard consonant sounds and meanings and uses of Latin became another language all together. My feelings are that the hard K Caesar or (K)aesar or more like KAISAR of the German pronunciation(s) we're NOT what Romans called Caesar ! They already had a hard consonant sound in (Q) for (K) .

The greatest irony here was that Ridley Scott had to tell the crew to take the day off at one point because the script was too short for the movie, so he quickly hired some more writers and spent the day coming up with more scenes!
