Every day at 1:00 PM a 30 minute Organ Recital is presented, the organist of the day gives a ‘Free to Attend’ selection of music on the instrument in the main hall of the Museum. Todays musician is Dr. James Hunter. In 2007 he was declared Glasgow’s Kelvingrove, first ever honorary director of music, he frequently gives the organ recital throughout the year. I would suggest the use of headphones to give the full effect of the powerful organ and the great acoustics of the hall. During the recital the normal activity of the Museum continues, producing ‘noises off’. As yet, I don’t know what this piece of music is called or who it is composed by - any suggestions ?
This big concert pipe organ is well worth coming to see and hear. It was first commissioned as part of the Glasgow International Exhibition in 1901. It was then rebuilt to become the central feature at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. The organ was manufactured and installed by Lewis & Co. and is made up of 2889 organ pipes. Because the Kelvingrove Gallery is not a church the music played on the organ is more varied. Weekday and Saturday recitals are more light and popular in nature, while Sunday recitals are more classical. The gallery also holds the world record for the presentation of daily organ recitals.

The Museum and Art Gallery is situated in the West End of Glasgow on Argyle Street, adjacent to the River Kelvin, Kelvingrove Park and The University of Glasgow.
