The prior homeowner replaced a bathroom window with glass block, but didn’t install a vent. When I bought the house, I learned that this is a code violation and I have to fix it. Is it possible to remove several blocks and add a vent, or do I have to remove the whole window and start from scratch? Thanks!
@TheBIGLOUBRUNO
@TheBIGLOUBRUNO 4 года назад
Hi Lee. If the window you have have mortar cement between the blocks you can remove two blocks and add a vent. If it’s glued together with clear silicone it makes it extremely tight and hard to remove two blocks without damaging others around it. When you do get them out. Sliding new vent in is extremely hard to do. Let me know what joint you have. I’ll guide you from there.

what are the two 1 inch bricks you lay first? I cannot find them at my home improvement store online, I have a brick wall basement NOT POURED so I need to do this just like you did in the video. Just need to know what they are called are they caps for a brick wall?. I ordered the wrong size window 12" I need the 14" as you have in the video. I am facing a 25% restocking fee to return the window. Can I just double up the 1" flat bricks as you use in this video and a little extra mortar to fill in any gaps? I gotta make this work. Could you please tell me the exact dimension of those bricks, and how wide are they how long? My window is only 4 inches thick. The only thing I can find close is, 2 x 8 x16 inches. Thank you

Hey guy. They are know in cement block land as a 1 inch solid. I get them from Susi’s building supply in western pa. They measure 8x16x1inch. Real size is 7 5/8ths x 15 and 5/8ths x 1 inch. Cap block. 1 inch isn’t everywhere. You may have better luck with a 2 inch solid. From a block yard. A paver isn’t compressed as much as a cmu. Concrete masonry unit. They will crack under mere pressure and they are 2 and 5/8ths. Hope this helps.

The top of a glass block window never gets mortared!!
@glassblockspecialtiesbybru8267
Lumbu4u Not true. Never say never. And I have 25 years of installing basement windows in the snowiest city in North America. We don’t rely on just caulking at head joint do to expansion and contraction in this climate. A true understanding of cement dictates a softer cement than the unit being laid. Look into a get back to me.

Glass Block Specialties By Bruno Thats good to know. I've been told for 25 years that mortaring the top joint causes it to bear weight. Also that caulking it is much better because it allows that joint to flex as needed. Is everyone wrong about that? So is it ok to mortar the top joint in any situation? Wud like to read your opinion abt it
@MrRccolaman
@MrRccolaman 6 лет назад
You're correct. The OP is probably embarrassed at being called out. IF you live where it gets cold its a terrible idea to mortar the top joint. When the season cause the house to expand and contract there is a good change at cracking the mortar or block windows themselves. See it all the time in Northeast Ohio.

RC Cola Totally agree with u RC. I just Did 10 block windows in WI. Although the gap was a little too big I I caulked the top of all of them. I don't want to do it the wrong way but haven't come across a solution yet. In the place of mortar only caulk exists. In your professional experience can u think of something else to fill a big gap? Besides building the window in or custom windows?

Do you have to have that 1 inch cinderblock to put the glass window on? Or does it depend on the current window ?

Can I use quikrete type S mortar mix to install my glass block basement window?
@TheBIGLOUBRUNO
@TheBIGLOUBRUNO 3 года назад
Yes you can. However it can be tough to grout bag it in. To get it to run smoothly through the bag we add a few more hand fouls off either Portland cement to richen it up. Or more type s powder. Not the prettiest mix. But type s powder that needs combined with sand.
@MrDulvalius69

@@TheBIGLOUBRUNO I used the glass block mortar mix on 3 out of 5 windows so far and the white looks really weird outside against the brick. Thats why I was thinking about using that instead.
@TheBIGLOUBRUNO
@TheBIGLOUBRUNO 3 года назад
@@MrDulvalius69 we call that a two tone install. White in gray out. If you rake back the joints you could grout a brown or gray exterior. However. White is the brightest and will help bring in more light. 😀

Is it safe to mortar the top? I’ve been watching a lot of videos where people talk about the mortar can’t bear the weight of the house.
@louisbruno4085
@louisbruno4085 6 лет назад
We mortar across the top of window every day. Its better than caulking that joint. After its been mortared in wait one day and then put a bead of caulking where the mortar meets your sill plate. Mortar and wood dont bond. But, BUT if you mortar it in to anchor window and fill the void like we do, Then the next day after mortar sets. You can put a nice clear bead of silicone at the separation / shrinkage crack at the top. Its now just a hairline bead and it still allows for expansion and contraction. Hope my answer helped. Louie
