I just loved this first video of yours! I work as hand engraver in Brazil, mainly in live events. Was doing some research on materials today, found this series, decided to take a look and I'm completely delighted by the way you talk about everything and how creative you are to build your space and work conditions! I use a Dremel-4000 as well, love it and it's possibilities and I'm sure that will be very interesting information on the next videos, so thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience!

started using a dremel like tool last year to etch glass , having a bit of fun exploring with it, recently got a maker x multi-tool, haven't test ran it yet but expect it to be fun, looking forward to your tips. if it's of benefit to yourself or others, here's a tip. i have pets & don't bar them away from me so in orders to keep my 2 old cats safe (& me too), i made a clear plastic bubble to work in. using old metal coat hangers i made a cube shape, covered in plastic. cut a hole in the plastic, duct taped a piece of glass from old picture frame in. light filters through great . i can see what i'm doing & it contains the particals as i etch

That's a really interesting idea. My dogs don't like the noise of the tool and spend most of the time snoozing in the house (or garden if it is warm). I know cats can be very inquisitive though so the extra protection sounds like a good idea.

For years I used a Dremel 3000 with a flexishaft. I found it good and reliable although you do have to make sure you check and change the brushes every so often. I moved to a Dremel pendant motor a year or two ago, the Fortiflex. It has quite a bit more power but the hand piece is a little more awkward.

@whatktmadenext Год назад
Hi. I don't have any recommendations I can give you, except to search on-line for "jewellery making tools and equipment ". I know Eternal Tools ships to outside the UK but I hear they can be expensive. I plan to do a video soon showing the difference between cheap and expensive burrs. As part of that I will ask people to comment about where they buy equipment, so perhaps I can build up a list for people to refer to. I am going to be in Germany next week, so I will do a bit of searching if I get a chance.

Yes, air tools have a very impressive spin speed. Some burrs would struggle to cope with that, particularly some polishing rubbers. I understand they can be very effective though.

Hello. Yes, I am aware that the sound quality is variable, to say the least and I am sorry if that is causing a problem. You will have realised that I don't make any money from these videos, and I don't expect I ever will. I don't have any specialised equipment and everything is just filmed on my phone, That said, I will try to improve the sound quality and I hope you will bear with me for the moment.

Hi Raleigh. I'm sorry you were having trouble hearing what I was saying. I did buy a clip mike recently and I had hoped that would improve the sound quality. Plainly not. I will keep trying to improve the sound and, once again, sorry that you were struggling to hear.

Just come across your channel and amazing in depth video.. can I ask what brand of rotary tool u are using is is the chuck bought separately.. thank you 🙂
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 3 года назад
Hello, and thank you for your kind comment. Personally I use a Dremel 3000 with a flexi-shaft attachment. The chuck is one I bought seperately; a Dremel multi-chuck. The fact that I use the Dremel shouldn't be taken as a recommendation for that tool (although I have to say I find it works very well for me). As have said in a couple of videos, choice of tool really depends on how hard you are going to work it and what your budget is. The multi-chuck is a massive help for me. It was not expensive and it allows me to use burrs with anything between 1.5mm and 3.2mm shanks.

@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 3 года назад
If you are going to be doing a lot of heavy duty engraving, you might want to look at a pendant motor. Foredom, Proxxon and Dremel all have machines that are worth a look. Pay attention to the handpieces that are available for each machine to make sure they will work with your burrs. Obviously those are quite a bit more expensive than the basic Dremel that I use.

what kind of adapter do I need to use dental burrs with my dremel?
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 2 года назад
You can use a multi chuck (Dremel part no. 4486 I think) or get a set of collets (which is part no. 4485). I use the multi chuck because it means I can swop easily between different shank sizes, including the 1.8mm shank dental burrs.

Can you please mention the tools here in the comments?
@whatktmadenext
@whatktmadenext 3 года назад
Hello. I have tried to avoid mentioning specific brand names of tools, because there are so many and all have their good points and bad points. I can say that I personally use a Dremel 3000 with a Flex Shaft attachment. Since I am largely a hobbyist, that works very well for me. Lots of other manufacturers make rotary tools that would work just as well, or possibly better if you were planning to do a lot of engraving, Foredom for example, and there other manufacturers like Goxawee to consider. I mentioned Micro-motor machines. Again there are a huge range of these available. Some of the cheaper ones, which are often aimed at the nail care industry, may be less suitable for engraving glass because they can lack power, but others are used very successfully. Many people use micro-motors produced by companies like Marathon to produce some beautiful work. Micro-motors produced for the dental industry can be very effective and tend to be very robust. Pendant motors tend to be at the more powerful end of the range. Again there are a large number of manufacturers. Proxxon and Foredom are two recognised manufacturers but others such as the Dremel Fortiflex or the machines made by Milbro are available. It can be very hard to decide what machine to get because the right choice for you depends very much on individual factors such as the amount of space you have, how much engraving you planning on doing and what your budget is. If it helps there are a number of comparison sites which provide very good information on the pros and cons of the different tools. I don't know if this has helped you at all, but I hope you find what you are looking for and enjoy your engraving.
