I saw Phil at a supper club in Tulsa in the 90s. I was like 8 feet away and could see and hear what and how he played. It was one of the highlights of my time there. I was sitting at a table further away and thought how cool would it be to get closer so I could see his technique. A band I met a few weeks earlier saw me and said come sit with us. So cool that God answered my desires.
John Sferra- The drummer that I tried to Modle myself with this style--- he is too good, Just listen to that single Bass pedal bouncing like a double Bass- then those wonderful rolls he throw's in between that most Xcellent cymbal work. ---Oh Yeah !
I was blessed growing up with them. I remember several times they played with The James Gang, on the same stage in the 60s. They practiced across the street from my brothers gf house. They were remarkable from day one.

This album was introduced to me by one of my college roommates. It is one of the finest Rock, Romantic and Religious albums ever made. Phil Keaggy had gone through a personal tragedy and thus went through a major transformation on this record.
I just recently rediscovered "Song of Hope" after many, many years. In a way I can't really explain, it gave me real comfort when my mother passed away 3 months ago. I didn't really regard it much, years ago. It's definitely a case of the Lord providing what I needed, when I needed it, that I can richly appreciate it now.

Noah Durant You are so very right! I wore out two copies of the album, Synergy in and of itself is fantastic, and still light years ahead of anybody then or now. Song of Hope says it all for me.
Song of hope is soo good, they also did it for the video on the Wmms simulcast on a public tv station with the FM radio station WMMS. 1st time ever in the world that was done. Little bit of history.
@@puercoespineta Glass Harp is not a victim. And Christians are not victims in general because it is understood that there will be a dislike. I've seen plenty of videos without dislikes BTW. Glass Harp Synergy is a fantastic album!
I saw Phil at a little place in Versailles, Ohio back in Feb 2020 before the pandemic. Caught him in the parking lot while he was carrying his guitars into the venue. Talked for a few minutes - we know some of the same people from Youngstown back in the day. Very down to earth guy.
Forgot to add that I've seen Phil and/or Glass Harp many times over the years from Northeast Ohio to Columbus and even Florida when I lived there. Greatest guitar player I have ever seen.
@@davidelder9597 Where in Florida did you see him? He is very down to earth. I took my Les Paul to the concert and at the end he signed it for me. Been listening to him since I got Saved in 83. They don't make music like this anymore.
This is one hell of a killer album, with 3 musicians way ahead of their time, just listen to John Sferra play those drum beats, rolls a triplet with one foot, fantastic offbeats in Never is a Long time. The guy is amazing, as is Phil Keaggy - Vocals, and a ripping lead guitar, then just listen to the Bass Runs that Dan Pecchio comes up with- out of site Man !

This is a wonderful album. First album is also great too. This band is like a fine wine. Just sounds better and better over time and never outdated. Guitar licks on this album...especially "Never is a Long Time"... way out there.
Starting off the album with "One Day At A Time" was the right move. Such a beautiful melodic beginning that kicks into a rocking frolicking good time! "Song Of Hope" is sublime. Clapton, Beck, Van Halen , Page and the like get all the accolades. But then you have Keaggy who is right up there with the best of them. Just not as famous. (Listen to "Shades of Green" from their live LP in Youngstown). No one is "better" than the others. There is a huge list of phenomenally gifted guitarists that aren't well known (Check out Doyle Dykes). Just different and unique styles of play...and so enjoyable to experience.
no keaggy is better than all of your aforementioned. his tone is up there with the gilmours and santanas and he is better than any of them (with only 9 fingers no less)
"One Day At A Time" 0:00 , "Song Of Hope" 18:28 ," and "Answer" 30:02 are masterpieces that surely are among the 500 greatest rock songs of all time. The rest of the album? Eh.
Wow. That has got to be the best guitar playing I have ever heard. I first found Phil Keaggy from his solo album TOWN TO TOWN from the early 80s so I already knew he is one of the very best!
Song of Hope - my fave. An early CCM band I was in (early 1970's) covered it. So good. Thanks to Phil K and Glass Harp for expanding my heart, my tastes and love for music.

+Matt Manus I've often wondered who was the first one to do the volume swells on electric guitar. In 1969 Duane Allman used them on the first Allman Brothers album. Jan Akkerman used them throughout his tenure with Focus (1970-1976), and Roy Buchanan famously used them on "The Messiah Will Come Again" (1972) and on other songs as early as 1969.
It's been rumored that Hendrix said Phil Keaggy was the best guitarist he ever heard. whether or not, imho Keaggy is one of the great rock and acoustic guitar players
Ive heard that as well..may be true, not sure (like everyone else who thinks they know everything Jimi said). Either way, he is as good as it gets. Jimi and EC both would have and probably did realize his talent. Even us non christians can appreciate this virtuoso (sorry about my spelling..this word doesnt look right.)
I saw Glass Harp many times live. Keaggy never used an eBow. Like Matt Manus stated, he would use his pinky finger on the volume knob. If I remember, he wrapped a rubber band around the knob for a better grip for his finger.
Sorry, Greg, but you're wrong. 1.) I read Phil's column in Guitar Player magazine when he still had that column, and he talked about his use of the eBow. 2.) Wikipedia says, "Contemporary Christian performer Phil Keaggy (of Decca recording artist Glass Harp fame) is also a prolific user of the EBow, more notably in his 1978 instrumental release The Master and the Musician, which features many different sounds created with the EBow. " Phil did like that pinky technique, TOO, but it was not the only way that he got those violin-like volume swells.
Mark Pettigrew Ok, maybe I need to rephrase this. Like I said, I saw Glass Harp numerous times, with the last time around 1970. Glass Harp was a local band and played a lot around the area. "Changes" is one of my all time favorites, along with "Whatever Life Demands". When I saw them play, Phil was not using an eBow. While searching for any eBow history info on the Internet, the eBow was invented in 1969 by Greg Heet, but I could not find out the date of when it was first put into production. I worked in a music store in the early 70s and I remember when we got our one and only eBow to sell, sometime around 72 or 73. Yes, I have seen Phil Keaggy on RU-vid videos demonstrating his playing and using an eBow. How he recorded or performed after 1970 or AFTER Glass Harp, I have no clue about. Phil Keaggy was, and still is, a tremendous talent. Glass Harp was a great band to see live and in person. They always packed the house when they played JB's in Kent.
MrGregOtis I never heard Phil play with Glass Harp live. I first learned about him when I attended a Christian festival in Pennsylvania, and when I visited Love Inn in Freeville, New York, where Scott Ross recorded a syndicated radio show mailed out to various secular rock stations on reel-to-reel tape. I worked sides by side with Phil. He boxed those tapes, and I used the degausser to erase the contents of old tapes destined to be re-used. When I left Love Inn, Phil gave me a warm, brotherly hug. He was a very humble man, considering his immense talent. More musicians should adopt that attitude.
Mark Pettigrew When was that Christian festival? I assume Keaggy played there. Forever ago, on the Dick Cavett talk show, Cavett was interviewing Jimi Hendrix. Cavett was giving Hendrix all kinds of praises, one of which was telling Hendrix that he was the world's greatest guitar player. Hendrix replied back that no he wasn't and that he (Hendrix) felt that there was a guitar player from Kent Ohio that was better than him. Hendrix never named that player, but the discussion around the "camp fire" was the speculation that Hendrix was referring to Keaggy. I kind of think that Hendrix was referring to someone else, a guitar virtuoso named Rick or Rich Underwood. Underwood was super talented, and rumored to have jammed with Hendrix and other nationally known artists that came through the area. No one will ever know, lost to history. And by the way, Joe Walsh (James Gang) is also from this area. Maybe Jimi was talking about Joe. It is hard to compare artists, because everyone has their own style. Who was better? Les Paul or Chet Atkins? Which do you like better? Apples or oranges, or maybe pears? This is what I do know, from first hand witnessing. Phil Keaggy was one of the best guitarist I have ever seen. Well, the green thing is an “Omega,” and the red lightening bolt thing I don’t know, but together they look a little bit like a capital A or “Alpha” in the Greek alphabet. It’s probably a reference to God being called “Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.”

Alan was a remarkable player indeed. But there's no comparison because they are so different. It's no secret that Phil admired Alan. On a side note, there is never really "the best" guitarist. But interesting of you to mention Alan.
Glass Harp is just one of the many reasons why secular rock music critics demonstrated their stupidity when they disparaged Christian rock music and its practitioners.

I respect their use of 'Jesus' but you gotta admit that theres a extremely low percentage of people who undertood Jesus's message, so in a way seeing his name in the lyrics its kind of boring.
