Join Andy Joe Plastic Hero as he tests glass, acrylic and polycarbonate against the force of a baseball bat! SPOILER ALERT - clicking "Show More" will reveal testing results!
Conclusion from this week's testing:
► Single pane glass = cannot withstand a one-handed bat swing! Sad.
► Acrylic = 30x the strength of glass, but will still break from the simple swing of a bat!
► Polycarbonate = 250x the strength of glass and will NOT break under the force of a baseball bat. Wowza, now that's strong!
Andy Joe Plastic Hero concludes that POLYCARBONATE is virtually unbreakable and the BEST choice when security is your end game. Check out our full website below under the "Sheet" category for all your sheeting and security needs.
"Andy Joe Plastic Hero" is an actual Tech employee here at U.S. Plastic Corporation. Have a technical question for Andy? Bring it on. Your question may just be featured in his next episode!

THAT was a clear and simple explanation. Next do a UV (weathering) test; which one lasts the longest.

I'm looking to build a display case with a clear top about 30 inches by 40 inches. Imagine a coffee table type of base with a clear display box on top. Wooden supports on the corners to slide panels of acrylic or polycorbonate on all sides. Then a wooden frame around the length and width of the top with that 30x40 clear surface resting on top. What material and thickness would you suggest for a surface piece of that size that will have minimal to no warping?

U.S. Plastic Corporation can polycarbonate survive deep ocean pressure? I need to know because I'm getting my thoughts ready for paper and I'm getting ready to make something no one has ever witnessed before. If it can't can you point me in the direction of something that is transparent and can survive the ocean depths without shattering?
@maiawells9597
@maiawells9597 4 года назад
@@incogspectator3042 polycarbonate has a tensile strength max of about 70 MPa (1/8 inch thickness tested) according to an ASTM test. Using a chart on wikipedia that's about what you'd see at ocean pressure when at 6500 meters. However, there are probably other factors to consider and you wouldn't want to just trust it would work without a lot of testing first.

I am trying to decide on glass, polycarbonate, or acrylic for a rooftop on a wooden pergola. What is better. The weather here reaches around 38-41 degrees celcius

Thank you for your interest in U.S. Plastic Corp.®. Acrylic and polycarbonate are both half the weight of a comparably sized piece of glass, and yet both plastics are much more durable than glass, providing more impact resistance. Polycarbonate is stronger than acrylic. Both acrylic and polycarbonate are weather-resistant and expand and contract with temperature changes without long-term or permanent shrinkage. Acrylic and polycarbonate are easy to clean. The best choice for cleaning is a microfiber or 100% cotton cloths. Acrylic should only be cleaned with warm soapy water or an acrylic cleaner. Polycarbonate has a higher chemical resistance; it can be cleaned by harsher cleaners containing chemicals. Neither plastic should be cleaned with solvents.

I would like to add that acrylic is more UV resistant than polycarbonate.
