#pottery #amaco #glaze
hey there potters, welcome to another episode of glaze review. in this episode we are taking a look at amaco potter's choice pc-28 frosted turquoise and reiterating what I have said multiple times in other videos about brushing versus dipping your glaze.
at times I think I should always brush a test just to see how it's going to come out but honestly the glazes come out less than desirable when I do that 🤷‍♂️
I'll see you potters later, have a good day and remember to click all the RU-vid buttons on your way out 🐐

I love the “broken Cheerios” cup too. The texture you added with clay is very interesting and it’s enhanced with the glaze.

I usually like pouring and dipping my glaze but I actually like the brushed on version more this time.

I can’t believe how fast you’re able to glaze pieces by pouring!! Especially by pouring the glaze from one piece into another!! You’re also able to brush the glaze on fast when you have a NICE banding wheel!! I have two that are just pointless compared to yours!! Now I just HAVE TO buy a Shimpo!! Thanks so much for all of your videos, they are all soo helpful!!

I don't normally care how you glaze, pour, brush....but I like the brushed one better on this one. The brush marks work for me on this piece. Stripes sooth my soul.

I SUPER missed your fire effect (flame circle) on the kiln! I loved the variation on the tests that went from yellowish-green to blue. Interesting texture look!

The turquoise glaze does create those olive green areas you noticed. To keep this from happening (a more consistent turquoise finish) give the piece more room in the kiln to breath. No pieces immediately next to it. If you like the olive green color you can do frosted turquoise over blue midnight for a consistent olive green finish (actually presents with midnight blue speckles).

I just had a kiln load where I had this glaze layered over the blue midnight, and the color turned a horrid mustard yellow. I also notice that if my piece was near a heat source--either on the outside of the shelf near the elements or next to where two half-shelves met and there was an updraft, it also got a mustard colored surface cast. It seemed the only time I got the color I was supposed to get, the kiln was closer to cone 5 than cone 6, and it wasn't used with any other color. I probably won't be using it in future.

Yes - it is a tricky glaze to work with. The mustard/olive green results aren’t very pretty but can have their uses. I did a dinosaur mug for my daughter and that’s a great color for Dino’s and other lizards - if you need that sort of thing…

I like the effect of the poured glaze. But is there any chance to prevent those excessive floating? It would looked better, if the glaze is more even on the surface.

The brush marks I see from the celadon line are a HUGE reason why I don't use them more often. Maybe I'll try pouring them to see if I start to like them more. Thanks!!!

Donte, what you see as a weird green looks to me like a mustard yellow--and that's exactly what I got when using this glaze. I've used it a few times now, and I've noticed it happens when its near a hot spot in the kiln--close to the elements, or where two shelves meet and there's an updraft. It looks almost like the glaze scorches, and I wonder if it would be more consistently blue-green if fired at Cone 5 rather than Cone 6. I've also found it does NOT layer well with black underglaze, nor with blue midnight and blue rutile. I get the same nasty yellow but then it looks like tempera paint applied by a kindergartener. I just have to say, though, that I did brush on my glaze, and I did alternate my brush strokes, and I did get the same result you got from pouring. Sorry, guy! Or maybe I should change my name to No One? XD

Thanks for these experiments. My go to hypothesis when the inside is a différent colour than the outside is reduction, or just some kind of difference in air flow. What do you think? Ps: I wish they had pictures of test tiles on different bodies. Thanks for providing that!

The brushed on glaze looks like it didn't mature. The dark clay with glaze looks like a grater glaze. Good on you Dante, I love your experimentation.

Question: can you help? Wondering why a piece that I used underglaze on sgraffito a design on, then cleared glazed came out great except it had bubbles all over it & the glaze was popping off? This cutting me.

Can you pour any new bottled glaze or do you need to water some down?
@BBodmer_art

Does pouring in the glaze use more glaze than brushing? I personally dont have much glaze or money for glaze and don't want to use more than necessary when doing it. But pouring does look better.

Didn't shame me, my textured turquoise (brushed on) was nothing like any of your pots. Your brushing technique smooths out the glaze a lot. When I brush I load the brush and 'lay' it over the surface. Your three coats brushed on is probably slightly less than one of my coats and I still put on three. Sorry if that's being a nerd but they do tell you to lay on three generous coats and your brushing technique in my opinion is a very skimpy one indeed. I will try pouring it, but am a little concerned about how much mess I'll make lol.

It's a potters take that it's better for air flow in the kiln. No one has tested it to my knowledge but I still do it from the old days.

I have tried your technique and love the look. However, I've has issues with the glaze running onto the kiln shelf. Makes me very sad! I still pour the inside, usually brush outside. How do you avoid the glaze running too much. Do you leave more of your foot unglazed?
@EarthNationCeramics
@EarthNationCeramics 2 года назад
I usually make the glaze line a little higher, a lot of people suggest 1/8 of an inch but I do about 1/4. It's about one extra wipe with the sponge

But Dante, you missed out entirely on the R of the BG's you can't be BGing without the R. We all know RBG makes life game faster :B If we ever meet irl yes you can throw a wet sock at me LMAO those really did look good. Makes me wonder if you straight dipped half that bowl then rotated it a third, and before dipping watered the glaze down if you would get a starker contrast between the greens and blues.

So, here's a question. There are at least five tenmoku recipes on glazy. Maybe a different one will work better with your lumos? I realize it's all chemistry.
@EarthNationCeramics
@EarthNationCeramics 2 года назад
I already have one that works pretty well with my lumos but it's the old school one. I don't pay attention to the newer ones because whenever I test them they don't come out very well.
