This video is the third in a series of videos for Ceramics I when making their Slab Drape-Molded Plates. These plates are an exercise with my Ceramics I kids, where they learn to roll an even slab, learn to drape mold it, learn to carve and clean it, and lastly, they will do the glazing using a bulb syringe and brush.
In this video, we are glazing the bisque fired plates. We use stoneware glazes (cone 5 and 6 midfire) and apply the glaze by either slip trailing or brushing. We use underglazes in the carved design grooves of the plate to keep the stoneware glazes separate when they fire.

In this video, I am using standard 153, a nice midrange firing stoneware.
I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my RU-vid channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

Thank you - underglazing was a bit confusing to me - applying/wiping it off

Hi love the technique. Have you added wax/oil to the black underglaze outline? how come the glaze does not melt over and overlap? or have you used stiff glazes instead of runny glazes. In Cuerda seca technique oil is added to Manganese oxide to create a barrier between glazes. Would love to learn more

Hi Shark Bait- so, I am using two types of applicators in this... the small bottles with which I am applying the underglaze, I am fairly sure is 16 gauge. When I have finer lines, I use about a 20 gauge tip. The red bulb syringe isn't listed as any gauge, as I use inflator needles (like you would use to fill a basketball) and I grind or file off the tip so it is straight!!!

How do you bisque fire your plates in the kiln do you stack them or prop them up on there sides? I'm starting to make plates and I'm confused the best way to fire them.

Hi Peggy- I bisque fire about 200 of these exercise plates every semester within a week of one another- when I bisque fire them, I will do it normally one of two ways. I sometimes fire them flat- in stacks of two rim to rim (as long as they are quite level) . The other way is I will take them and stand the bone dry plates on their rim, and lean them gently against some clustered posts. I do this most often, as it is faster to fire these little guys. If the plates were bigger though (as I do in Ceramics II with a platter exercise) I do not do them on edge- but do them flat rim to rim. When I glaze fire them, each one individually goes on a shelf, sitting flat on the bottom. If students have glazed the back of the rim, then I have them make a patty for protection of the kiln shelf. (There is another couple of videos on making patties) . I hope that helps?!

It is slightly shiny, as the vapor glazing of the surrounding glazes create a seal that is somewhat shiny!

I would love for you to recommend basic colors you would use if you were beginning a new class of 40 students. This is my situation and there are so many to choose from.

Here is the link for the one in the video . www.highwaterclays.com/index.cfm/product/4095/red-bulb-slip-trailer.cfm . Of course, there are a few others which are fancier and nicer in the Googledoc in the video description, or on my Amazon Influencer shop!
