Hi 1mediaguy,a guitar body usually has polyurethane, or (2 part automotive) urethane, or lacquer clear coat. They should be abraded with the 600 grit to achieve a dull finish, and the glaze is a mixture using the same kind of paint or a universal tint, and then everything is cleared. So if the base is poly, then you use poly with tints, and then finish with poly, sanding in between every layer.

You are most welcome. Once you have completed the swirling effect with the Golden Acrylics, allow them to dry really well, probably 72 hours or so depending on temperature, humidity and airflow. You will not need to sand the acrylic paint layer in order to have the 2K polyurethane adhere. The acrylics are more porous than automotive coats which will require sanding between every layer.

@jeffreycollins Oh, we know, we know!! And definitely part of the joy of being a color junkie, as all of us at Golden are, is precisely that infinite expanse of exploration.

Thank you for your quick reply! Yes, I will be sanding the original finish to remove top poly. I will then spray a base coat and swirl (marble) with Golden Fluid Acrylics in a methylcel size. After drying & washing, I'm thinking of glazing the entire body with an interference color. My question is, once dry, can the glaze be sanded down to 600 grit so that I may finish over it with a 2K poly? Thank you!

acrylic wont stick to marble unless you prime it but that would defeat the purpose of painting on marble because I imagine you want the marble patterns to show through. I just finished a project painting oil on granite and it works well although you'll want to leave some kind of lighting that gives off heat on it 24 hours to be able to dry it faster and have the rock's "pores" open under heat and absorb the oil. I would allow 2-3 weeks of 24 hour a day light/heat or sunlight

SunTanners -- Although the Old Masters developed many thin layers of glazes to create their luminosity, it is possible to create depth in a single layer as well. The key lies in using transparent colors, like those shown in the video, and then blending them with a thicker gel instead of a thin medium. Try Regular Gel Gloss as a start, and know there are thinner and even thicker products available. Contact our tech support group for more details.

hiya i want to re paint a marble statue because some of the old paint is peeling off, if i use acrylic paints with glaze will this also stop it from peeling in the future?

Can a glaze be sanded? I'm thinking of glazing over an acrylic guitar swirl (marbling) and need to be able to sand it down to a 600 grit prior to finishing with a spray poly. Thanks!

Hi Angelic, Putting more paint over paint that's peeling off doesn't do much good. You would probably want to wirebrush or sandblast off any loose paint, then fill in the losses with paint (GAC 200 plus GOLDEN Heavy Body or Fluid Acrylics) and then apply the Hard MSA Varnish over the entire statue to finish it. Aside from taking all of the old paint completely off and starting fresh, this is about all that you can do. - Mike T, Golden Artist Colors Technical Support.
