Here is a 30 minute video showing real world glazing of cups with spotted purple and chun seafoam glaze and then some theory and practice on Specific Gravity (various methods) , Glaze Viscosity (Zahn cup/ deflocculation and flocculation), Glaze Thickness on the cup (micrometer and ocular loop ), and other assorted fun stuff. #CBWW2020

Thanks John. Don’t worry if people aren’t entertained. You are sharing ‘secrets’ and information you have worked in your whole life in my opinion. And you are giving it away for free. We should be grateful.

I got your book for Christmas. Haven’t tried making any glazes yet but now I’m ready. Love that purple and sea foam combo!

Great video. I love that you showed us the syringe. I use them instead of the graduated cylinder as they are so much easier to clean and I don’t waste so much glaze. I like 10 or 20 mL syringes for adjusting a solo cup size test batch. When I want my glazes to be consistent from one batch to the next, knowing specific gravity really helps. I use my stick blender and get the bucket mixed, then hold it in the top and when it’s going around smoothly, I shut it off abruptly. I then watch how long the bubbles keep going around. If it’s too thin, it keeps spinning a long time. When it’s just right, it spins for a couple or three seconds then stops. Easier than the Zahn cup but not as quantitative. Thanks for showing us how you do all these things.

Great video, so much useful info. I use the specific gravity for "waterfall" from mastering cone 6, otherwise it can be a bad mess with the running off the pot. I like dipping a test tile or broken shard of bisque to see the thickness.

The information about the two glaze slops with the same Sp.Gr.and getting different results, is interesting. I did not think off hand, how much more there is to it than weighing the slop. How much they are flocculated or deflocculated, the glazing method, application time, the clay type, absorption - all factors to get the same amount of glaze on the pot. Good to know, and I certainly wing it with the glazes I know well. Thanks for the info.

18:23 that is exactly why I wondered about the importance of specific gravity. Thanks for this excellent video, again.

I did a very similar thing for liner glaze using randys all of you zarco pack and I can't remember what yellow I put in I'd have to go look at my notes but it turns into a beautiful cream color it's a really nice butter cream that's what I call it anyway they remind me of buttercream frosting not too yellow not too white just nice

Someone asked if you could make a Zahn cup and yes you can ..take a small prescription container ..the amber ones and drill a 1/4" hole in it. Works great but as I said I never need to use that. I just stir and look and then can see it marbling or too thick etc.

Hey John could you possibly do a video on making the press forms that you used for those skulls you made. Your video 9 yrs ago just showed skulls leather hard. I've tried to replicate the 4 part form from a skull and have failed many times. I gave up on doing ceramics all together to frustrating. Wish I knew how to make those forms.

It is complicated....you have to start small...have you made a 2 part mold?

I hope you still read the comments on these older videos. I duplicated this recipe again I've done it before and when I make this recipe it ends up being dark grey in the bucket I'm only using 6% cobalt carbonate it doesn't seemed like another 124 grams of cobalt carbonate should make that much of a difference in the color though my talc is very dark I don't know maybe it comes in all different shades could you give me some insight on this?

Probably...BTW.... it a try. You always have to try it and your kiln because all kilns are different and front and all thermal couples are different and the amount of work in the kiln is different so that changes the way things heat up and cool down
