I think a lot of that depends on the school and people in it, but generally speaking, it's more of a trope than something based in real life. Just like, all my experience with bullies weren't big tough jocks, they were people who were friends of mine. And they didn't shove me into lockers or beat me up for lunch money, it was "good-natured" verbal abuse or hijinks that got out of hand. TV goes with what's easy, not necessarily what's realistic.

I both agree and disagree. as someone who went to a small high school in the south, it definitely was considered kind of dorky to do Chorus (or Glee Club or Vocal Ensemble, whatever you want to call it). sports was always funded a lot more, so the arts program always was very.. campy… and i say that as the former section leader of my section and drama club pres (former bc i graduated a few years back)

I actually am impressed that the girl that ratted the teacher out was able to stay in that town. I know of another student who had to flee the state after reporting a teacher for illegal activities. There was a large portion of the town which stalked and sent death threats and talked with each other on a Facebook group that was visible to the public about doing horrible things to them, along with images of them and their house and noting everything they did and when they left their house, when they had an open window, but then again the student and the parents were atheists and the teacher was a Christian in the bible belt. I guess the police were in on it, since they refused to do anything about it. All the stores and restaurants and churches put up signs saying they were supporting the teacher and were against the student. West Virginia is a crazy place. The teacher was protected by the school and they celebrated when the girl and her parents fled the state.

Honestly I feel like the only reason Jane Lynch hasn't really received too much shit about her role and why her character is actually generally tolerated a but more than others is because, like you said, Jane Lynch recognized right way that her character was NOT A GOOD PERSON. The character may be a source of comedy, and hell, maybe there might come a time where you can sort of sympathize with parts of her, but she never plays her like her actions are justified. Plays her like her CHARACTER thinks her actions are justified? Oh, absolutely! But she absolutely plays her as someone that, even when introduced with a "reason" for her actions, does not have an *excuse* for her actions. And that's why her performance not only outshined everyone else, but her character and her personal role in the show hasn't received the kind of backlash the others have. You can see the awareness in the way she brings that character to life, and people recognize that.

What I find funny is that Finn makes up a lie saying that Shue offered him extra credit to join the Glee Club, which...is a significantly less creepy and illegal way of getting a kid to join a club than blackmailing him with drug possession And if it's not a lie then that means Will went "okay so on top of not going to jail, you also get extra Spanish credit" and not once did he decide "let me try the other thing first and see if it's enough"

Exactly! It started out as a black comedy but once it got really popular the creators felt like they needed to do more with the show and started trying to add lessons on top of everything, which didn't match up tonally with their original intention. The shame is that the show could've been some great character material. They could've had Me Schuster realize that the Glee Club is about the kids, not his selfish desire to relive his youth. Have Sue Selvester learn that being such a terrible person has left her alone and miserable and have her try to be a better person. Even have the bullies learn to empathize with their victims and try to make up for how they wronged them. Having a cast of deeply flawed characters is not an inherently bad thing, and can make for some excellent storytelling.

@@helloill672 was about to mention Community! Totally agree, that show gets the “flawed but likeable characters” thing right from the pilot episode. I haven’t watched Glee, but from what I can gather it struggles with making its characters likable for a long time, and watching unlikable mean characters for multiple seasons before they learn just doesn’t sound like a great time. That is my personal bias showing though, if someone tells me to watch a show and says “the main character(s) are awful and intolerable for the first few seasons, but they get better later!”, I just won’t want to watch it. I’d rather characters have something redeemable about them from the beginning, otherwise I feel like I’m gonna waste my time. In my opinion, a TV show should have flawed but likable characters who you get invested in, because that’s what TV shows do best. Just a reminder that if you see a child/minor getting abused by a teacher, please DO report it so that the abuse can be stopped. Don't wait for the CHILD to come forward with their story because they are a CHILD (this includes teenagers). They might not understand why what is happening is harmful to them or they might be pressured into silence by their teacher. (and the teacher stays free to potentially abuse others) You also do not have to report it to the school. (If you are afraid people will gossip or the school will cover it up ect). Report it to the police directly. It is a crime to abuse a child. It's an affair for the police. In cases like this, the identity of the child is supposed to stay protected. There should be laws in place for that. It's not your place to tell someone else's story of their abuse but if someone is in need of help, get them help. I felt like that got a little muddled in the video so I felt the need to mention it in the comments.
@erinbush9005

Not only this, research the protocol in your area. There are a lot of laws about things like this, and following the steps can help to get the victim a lot of help. You remember that part later on where the gay kid intentionally manipulates his single father into dating the very, VERY straight boy's single mother for no reason other than wanting to be able to spend more time around the straight boy in order to convince him to try being gay, then when the obviously uncomfortable straight boy comes home to find their room (which they were forced to share against his will, by the way) completely rearranged and redecorated with out his knowledge or consent, he starts using some homophobic slurs to insult the gay boy, and then the straight boy is the one who 'learns a lesson' about tolerance and accepting others while the gay boy gets off with zero repercussions or even a single question about his incredibly disgusting and inappropriate actions? Good times, that.

Agreed with everything, I suppose that it was an attempt to appeal to the-then still-fairly-repressed LGBTQ community... Written by someone who never actually talked to a gay/bi teen about experiences in the high school social settings. And, unlike _Seinfeld_ where you supposed to laugh *at* the horrible people *because* they're horrible people and they get their comeuppance, you're expected to laugh *with* the horrible characters in _Glee_ *despite* them being horrible people who get away more-or-less scot-free. Semi-related: Something tells me you've opened the floodgates for others to start venting actual homophobia, using the episode you've described as "proof" of how "actual" LGBT people "get away" with this stuff "in real life too". So that should be "fun".

I liked Jane Lynch's character and that's it. She is iconic in a mean sort of way and fits the role like a glove. But for a show that self-advertised its diversity, Glee kind of reinforced many stereotypes and misconceptions: mental health, race, biphobia, sexual abuse, etc. Kinda hypocritical.

Jane's character for the most part was meant to be the antagonist, so she could get away with just being mean and having fun with it, whereas some of the others were meant to be "good role models" or instilling some kind of positive message and it fell flat. Interestingly, when Jane's character did do good it really felt more like what they were actually trying to achieve in their message the rest of the time.

The crazy part is that the Jane Lynch character is, in a lot of ways, the hero of the show IF we’re using properly portrayed diversity as a metric. Yes, she did and says terrible things, but she also calls out Will constantly on horrible shit he does. Including the episode that Coach Beast comes out as trans. (Also the trans representation in the show is super cringe. They were clearly trying to woke without really understanding the struggles trans people go through, and at times actually contributed to the terrible stereotypes, as you mentioned)

The funny thing is I remember the show Community made an episode parodying Glee called Regional Holiday Music. Their Glee Club director "Mr. Rad" was portrayed as a happy and charming guy who loved to perform but in actually was sinister and manipulated the main cast into joining his club. I thought they just did that as a joke, but after seeing RU-vid videos like this one analyzing Mr. Shue's problematic behavior it looks like Community was on to something.

I hate to be that person, but the word you're looking for is satarizing, not parodying. You parody something you like, you satirize something you dislike. For example, One Punch Man is a paradoy of Superhero media, whereas Watchmen is a satire of Superhero media.
@fionatastic0.070
@fionatastic0.070 2 года назад
@@castillogrande8926 Well, satire is more of a worldly critique of a cultural, social, economic, etc. phenomenon. Parody is usually making light of a specific piece of media, a specific book, film, TV show, etc. or tropes that are common across several pieces of similar media. The two can overlap sometimes (art imitates life and vice versa and all that) but that’s the difference as far as I understand it. I would say that the OP is using the word correctly because it’s mocking Glee specifically but it could extend to romanticization of problematic characters irl so maybe a bit of both.

Just to correct one thing. If you are going to have a glee club/high school choir, you actually do need a budget. You have to pay for sheet music, sometimes you have to pay for someone to play the piano (although sometimes you can get a band teacher/student to do that for free). It's also nice to have choir robes or something like that so that every kid doesn't have to spend the money to come up with some kind of uniform and acceptable performance outfit. You also often have to pay for transportation to performance venues/conferences/etc. So yeah, you don't need a huge budget, but you do probably need more than $60. Carry on.

@kayleigharnold
@kayleigharnold 2 года назад
Yeah for sure, my choir teacher was the one who played the piano or he just played the track in the background, but even with that expense out of the way you still have things to pay for. Sheet music like you said is it’s own expense, not to mention microphones, speakers, and equipment. But each year, each student has to pay $100, of course there was ways to reduce it down to $25 I believe for certain students, but I spent $100 each year for choir. $75 for the dress, $5 for the folder, and $20 for the yearly shirt. Not to mention the week camp was $430. And you had to pay per student for our 2 big completions each year
@katyggls
@katyggls 2 года назад
@@kayleigharnold Interesting. This was many years ago, but in my high school, choir was an actual class (albeit an elective) that you got credit for, so the school district paid for almost everything, except our choir robes, which we had some fundraisers to pay for (selling candy bars and such), and if a student did extra things like trying out for the all-state conference, they had to pay for their own entrance fee and all that. I'm sure it varies a lot by the school district and whether the choir or glee club is an actual class or purely an extracurricular activity.
@bogosbinted5734
@bogosbinted5734 Год назад
As a band and theatre kid, sheet music and music rights are expensive enough alone, even if you aren't also paying to print it. Anything related to performance has insane amounts of hidden but necessary costs.
@katyggls
@katyggls Год назад
@@bogosbinted5734 Yeah, I probably should have explained that part better, but when you buy sheet music, you aren't just paying for some paper with notes and lyrics printed on it; the price effectively includes a license to perform that work. Hence why sheet music is so expensive. And in order to license an entire choir, every single performer must have their own licensed and purchased copy, they can't share, and you can't buy one copy and make a bunch of copies of it on a copying machine or whatever. Even if it's a digital license where you print it yourself, you still have to buy a license for every person in the choir.

Santana Lopez was my representation and looking back on the show now, I'm still grateful for that because Naya Rivera is an incredible talent who pushed to make a one-off joke about Santana and Brittany having had sex in the mid-season finale of season one into a whole story arc with depth and substance and (some) nuance.
