At 68yrs old i've seen many great musicians. Personally , i believe Glen is one of the greatest guitarists ever recorded. But because of his great vocals people naturally focused on his singing. He was a session musician who couldn't read or write music. One of a kind.
He truly was a virtuoso. God given natural talent. His arrangements are like no one else’s and one of the first that I recognized the use of minor progressions to drive a song.
I'm agreeing to that! There are a lot of guitarists who I envy and idolize, and (RIP, God love him), Glen Campbell is in the Top Five! And vocalists, Mr Osmond is right up there with him!
@@jeffclark7888 Why would you say taht things were "more simiple and pure" then? THe lyrics of the song are, but the times themseles? I don't think so, having lived through the sixties and seventies.
Chance meeting with Donny: Circa 1980, I was an engineer at at Chicago TV station. One morning, he was alone in the studio hallway quietly waiting to appear on our morning show. I was pushing an oscilloscope cart down the hall, and nodded respectfully to him as I passed. About one step after I passed him he said: "Is that a Tektronix 465 scope?" I replied, "Yes it is, I can't believe you recognize it". He said "I have one at home in Utah". He told me he loves electronics as a hobby and enjoys relaxing at home building small electronic projects. We talked a little about the kind of electronics he liked and what he was building. Just then, he was called into the studio and we said goodbye. He was a really nice and down to earth guy. Years pass, I move to Los Angeles and work in engineering at the TV studio complex where the ABC-TV "Donny and Marie Show" was produced. Some of my co-workers worked on that show. One day at work, I mentioned my chance meeting with Donny in Chicago, and asked "Did you guys know electronics was his hobby?" They knew well. Donny was friends with several engineers and was a frequent and welcome guest in the engineering shop. One of the guys was kind of his mentor in electronics. All who knew him liked him and spoke well of him.
Glen’s renditions of “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” and “Dreams of the Everyday Housewife” will be listened to by music lovers eternally. RIP Glen.
Cudos for Donny coming instantly with perfect harmonies at the end. Their voices melded so well, they'd have done a great job covering some Everly Brothers' classics.
Never really taken any notice of Donny Osmond before, he was just a teeny bopper when I was in my late teens going on twenty. But he can really sing and Glen Campbell has always been very talented.
Donnie was my first love. I am 57 yrs old now and I still feel about him as I did when I was six. I spent a lot of my young life pretending alot to escape. And I felt safe when I heard Donnie and Glenn. Thanks to both of you. Donnie I am still available!
I'm no rose tinted spectacle fiend whingeing about how music's gone to the dogs and how it used to be so brilliant - there's good and bad in every era. However, they certainly don't write chord sequences like they used to.
Wonderful clip. Donny and Glen are great. I worked at a company that was involved with music production and met Donny when he came to our studio to do an interview. He was gracious and polite to everyone, generous with his time, and a consummate professional. What an authentically nice and wonderful guy!
Glen Campbell is an American LEGEND! Such an amazing musical artist! I feel honored to have seen him in concert during his final tour and he didn’t miss a note or word ❤️
Radio King To me, the TV show really damaged his potential as a musician, took him years to get back on the charts. I was a fan back then, but even then, I hated the show. (I'm sure I'm in the minority among his fans.)
This is a great interview. Glen is obviously spot on vocally and an incredible guitarist and he also comes across as a nice guy but credit has got to be given to Donny as well. Glen gets to pick the key and the arrangement that he likes and Donny does a great job of going along with it.
True enough. It is also clear Glen knows Donnie’s vocal range and took that into consideration in selecting a song key they both could get into comfortably.
Just. Wow. How can this bring tears? Sheer talent, true affection between these two marvelous talents, and an impromptu joint rendition of a CLASSIC. 'Nuff said. So glad this showed up for me today.
Glen was a top of the line guitarist and performer. ever. My Dad a WW-2 Veteran died of Alzheimer's. It is such a terrible disease. God Bless Mr.Campbell and my Dad!!
I really appreciate Glen’s God given talent, & miss his music. I have several of his cd’s, and I was blessed to see Jimmy Webb’s concert tribute to Glen. It was a wonderful show, and I was also fortunate to get to sit and chat with Jimmy after his show that night, and he was agreeable to my friend take a picture of the two of us. I still have that picture on my phone. This was after I survived a stroke. I’m grateful that I was able to see this show, meet Jimmy, & talk about Glen.
Glen Campbell, Donny Osmond, John Denver, and Jim Croce were some of the fabric of the music of my youth. I grew up right along with Donny Osmond.and remember the girls swarming in the line to see him and some either getting crushed or passing out. I also remember Glen Campbell’s music so well, and the first 2 45’s that I ever got as presents were Galveston and Wichita Lineman. And then, I’m Not Gonna Miss You, relating to Glen’s Alzheimer’s that he cut and filmed with his wife and children through the years absolutely broke my heart , because it was at the exact same time as my Mom passed away after dying from the inside out caused by 7 years of battling Alzheimer’s. RIP Glen!! ❤️❤️🙏🙏🎵
After watching this video I started talking to my wife about it. I knew he had a long relationship with Tanya Tucker so I asked my wife if she knew what time period in Glenn’s life that occurred. While she was researching that she found out that Glenn had died in a drowning accident as a boy. Apparently he had blue lips when his brother began resuscitating him. To the worlds great fortune, he lived.
I saw Donnie and Marie perform their Christmas show in Phoenix a few years back. Mohammad Ali was there. Donny jumped down in the audience to greet him and he waved to the crowd. I’m yelling this: IT WAS THE MOST AMAZING SHOW EVER!!!! Donnie and Marie were incredible. I do not know how Donnie did the things he did. He’s my age for goodness sake. He was running around and dancing like a teenager. My mother-in-law was the realtor for Glen Campbell’s mother in Sun City. She drove us by her house. Many moons ago. LOL.
Glen was an awesome guitarist and not many people knew that...but you can see it here! What a treat this was to see...how can you not like this! Thanks for posting!
Before my Osmonds craze in high school, I was a junior high girl who used my own money to buy a Glen Campbell live album because I loved his radio hits (all 2 or 3? up to that time?) because of his sweet voice. About 45 years later I got to see him, it was about a year before his Alzheimer’s announcement. Still had a great voice! RIP. I bet he’s singing with the angels now.
I attended Brigham Young University around the same time as the younger Osmond's did too. I used to see Donny and Marie roaming the campus or driving around the streets of Provo. My roommate and his girlfriend were driving down a local canyon road one day and came across Billy Joel, in town to do a concert. He had just dumped a Harley he had borrowed from Jimmy Osmond. In retrospect, those were pretty magical times. And as Donny mentioned, great skiing!
What a truly amazing artist Glen was, and I believe these two men really thought that way about each other, I was never an Osman fan of course but he impressed me greatly here just being a proper man
There was many greats back in the day. There was Elvis, Johnny Cash, Roy Clark, but I have to say that Glen Campbell had it all. A great guitarist, entertainer, good looking and kind. That’s what make a star! 🤩
His brother Wayne was to have been extremely talented on the guitar, along with brother Jay on the drums! Remember…………he was part of a group who played many instruments, so I’m sure he has heard guitar playing like that before!!! Oh, and Glenn was playing a 12 string guitar which has a much fuller sound!!!
What Glen says about Jimmy is right...When you listen to Paul Gauguin...it's incredible how he follows that chord progression through the song. I worked with him once in Dallas and was in tears a number of times when I got to listen to him play the piano...he is complete genius.
Someone said this was a bad interview??? They're at ease, happy, some never heard insight..,and the two songs, done like they've not been heard before. I'm playing well over 40 yrs and I could never be as relaxed and natural as they are. They've got a gift I'll never have and will always envy.
They're so at ease and relaxed because they were born to be entertainers. We know Donny started at age 5 and I think Glen started out in show business fairly young also. Being in front of a camera is second nature to them. They're both confident guys who know just how damn good they are.
I agree. It's, by far, my favourite interview. Everyone's so chill and relaxed. Also, I love the friendship and the musical (vocal) chemistry between Donny and Glen here. Not only are they talented but they also seem like very down-to-earth guys. Being a millenial, I didn't grow up listening to the Osmonds or watching their show. In fact, I knew very little (next to nothing) about them (not even the bit about Donny singing on one of my fav Disney movie soundtracks (Mulan)) until a year or two ago. But, I did grow up listening to Glen Campbell (thanks to my dad) and I remember falling in love with his voice the first time I heard him sing Both Sides Now and Wichita Lineman. Now both dudes are up there on my list of top vocalists.
Love that GC mentioned that he was Breastfed; no wonder he was so bright! RIP, I saw you shred live 4th of July in 2001, and it was a wonderful time, Godspeed to you sir!
I love how much Donny's son, Chris (Christopher), who is a great singer and musician in his own right, looks just like his father, RIGHT NOW, just so much like his dad does back in this clip back then! I've personally met Donny, his amazing wife, Debbie, and most of his wonderful sons. He and his family are are truly the kindest people anyone could ever (hope or dream to) have pleasure to meet.
How sweet this is!!!! Thank you Glen and Donny. You are truly the best of the best. We appreciate you so much for all you have given us! Thanks so much.
