We take Prof John Cartwright back to the place of his childhood, the once tiny seaside village of Glencairn, in the deep south of Cape Town. Only on Africa Sideways,
30 years ago it was very sparsely built up. Especially right up at the top in De Villiers Way. Part of the challenge was building something decent up on the slopes. I had a bulldozer cut a driveway up onto the property in order to build a double garage and parking in front of it. The house was timber frame in a Victorian style, double storey with a large deck downstairs and a smaller balcony off the main bedroom looking down the valley. Four bedroom and two bathroom was unusual for the time. There were about 10 houses in the street by 1993. Sold for R185k before moving to Parow for work.
