I really liked this film. I absolutely was blown away by both Glenn & Conti. I can see where they were "naturals" on film. Thoroughly enjoyed this gem.
Rob, that was a very entertaining hour my wife and I spent watching this delightful movie. All the actors gave wonderful performances. It's hard to believe it's been 85 years. My, how our can-do spirit has changed. I look forward to its return someday. Until then, I'll enjoy past classics and forgotten gems such as this one.
Richard Conte far outshines Glenn Ford in their mutual film debut. But Conte was limited by his racial or ethnic profile, even despite his amazing ability as a dancer, so that he was far more versatile than Ford.
Outstanding Movie.....I will even watch it Twice or More! The buckshot victim was higher billing because he was Jewish.....they did that back then (or maybe still do)??? Almost as good as the Prince and the pauper (the 2 twin kids and A. Flynn)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
45:45 "Aiding and abetting an alien to evade the lay, five years". If only were had prosecutors who would charge all of the politicians and cops who have been breaking federal law we might get out country back in shape.
I thought it was funny when he said it wasn't fit for a war which is funny because I remember growing up in Arizona and it was quite the battle ground for drugs, guns, and the civil war back in the 1860s.
Thank you for the wonderful movie. I really enjoyed all the main actors in this one. Jean Rogers, Glen Ford, Richard Conti and Raymond Walburn all did splendid jobs. Watching their friendships develop over an cross country adventure was captivating. Totally different era for sure. Always enjoy looking back through these vignettes of times past. Many thanks to you Rob Word. ❤️ 👍
Hey Rob- Thanks for posting this ! Wow - Glenn Ford’s and Richard Conte’s first movie. Amazing ! A little bit “Sullivan’s Travels,” a little bit “Wild Boys of the Road,” and a little bit “Emperor of the North.” In answer to your question, and with all due respect to Glenn Ford, I’d say Richard Conte shows the greatest potential here. IMHO, Conte was great in just about everything he did, from this .. to playing his final major role as Barzini in “The Godfather.” Just finished watching Conte (along with Susan Hayward) in Joe Mankiewicz’s “House of Strangers” (1949), which I had never seen before. Brilliant! I loved Glenn in “Gilda,” which of course made Rita Hayworth the superstar she became, noirs like "The Big Heat," and westerns like “3:10 to Yuma;” but if I had to choose between him and Conte in this picture, it would have to be Conte. Love this stuff and AWOW- please let’s have more !
Glen Ford did a wonderful job. I so hate that when actors like FORD, get older, they always get the villain part. Your Nutcracker collection rivals my 2 sister's collections. For years I bought them each different ones as I could find them. Thanks for another fun film to eat popcorn and enjoy .
It was likely figured that Dale Arden was the only one movie goers would recognize among a cast of newcomers in this little second feature anyway. Hence the billing. Or maybe they were going by seniority. Saw this film on late-night telly when I was a kid and was impressed with how hobo Conte made soup out of a cup of hot water. I of course as a kid who was used to putting ketchup on everything anyway, had tuh try it myself, and as I recall thought it wasn't half bad.
Gimme Glen Ford any time! Many thanks. Lamb chops at 45 cents a pound, I’ll take some of that too. Who’s had more supporting roles than Ward Bond? I’ll wait.
Going for my 2nd time watching it. EVERYONE was superb in this movie. Glenn was a natural!!. What a story. My dad was on Tinian Island B-29 Navigator so I grew up on black and white. I DO NOT LIKE COLORIZED FILM.
Question @ minute 17:00 "Say, how big is that ranch of yours?" Answer: "20 acres. I don't know exactly how big that is, but I imagine it's about a mile square." Ah, the naive. A square mile has 640 acres.
Thanks Rob.. Glenn Ford was recuited by Wild Bill Donovan to be an OSS agent along with Sterling Hayden, Eddie Albert & William Hooper because Actors are trained to lie convincigly. Hopper join the Navy Underwater & Sabotage Team (Fogmen / Seals).. After WW II Glenn Ford worked for Navy Intelligence till the 1069' & took all his secrets to the Grave like William Hopper did. I'd love to see all them Files deClassfied..
FORD & CONTE, unknown young guys who were totally unaware of what fame and fortune awaited them... the HOLLYWOOD talent scouts picked some winners here for sure, they had personality and charisma bigtime. Of course writer Dalton Trumbo would go on to bigger, better and some very bad times in his career... as for wannabee Valentino actor turned director Ricardo Cortez, his HOLLYWOOD career wasn't making him rich but his later job on Wall Street did! Good little movie loaded-up with great veteran character actors who saved many a picture and helped along many stars in the making...
I can tell very easily that Richard conti and Glen Ford are both very talented actors. I would say Richard conti is my favorite. He's very believable and has honed his acting skills before this movie was made! He's top notch!
Fascinating provenance. The roads of John Garfield, Dalton Tremblay, John Garfield, Elia Khazan, Glen Ford and Richard Conte all crisscrossed. Khazan snitched during HUAC. Garfield suffered as a result of HUAC and tragically died young. Dalton was blacklisted for years. Ford played in the A lackluster movies the fifties were known for. Conte was a gritty B film noire actor in the fifties. His acting style was always the same, never changed.
Great movie. The kind I used to see in my small town theater that didn't get the big productions. You should have included the fact that one of our favorite Western actors, Ward Bond was in this.
well I would never have believed that was Glen Ford and Richard Conti's first film. they were so so professional already. Glad Richard Conti changed is name from Nicolas...only suited Saint Nicolas. You could see what different talent scoutssee when they pick out their future investments...Glen Ford that hardworking ,level headed respectful law-abinding boy next door makeing good of each situation . richard smooth handsome charmer...looking for the quickest and easiest way to get along ducker and diver...with a heart of Gold , good values of friendship and comaraderie. which came to the fore in so so many varied roles. Loved every minute of this wonderful film.
I love the speech patterns of Ms Rogers! Quite distinctive! Legend has it that my step-dad(RIP) had 'hopped a few trains' before settling in California, Steinbeck country, Salinas to be precise! Trumbo et al was a great writer!
This 60 min film is a good example of simple story telling - a skill lost since the Twilight Zone writers of the 1960s, I imagine. The writing in this movie was not sophisticated and the ending was clumsy but overall it was a nice hour. Better than 3 hours of space aliens, dragons and nonstop superman fighting. I always like Ford but in this movie Conte gave a smoother performance. Ford's character was stiff or lacked diminsion. Can't tell if it was his acting or the script. Probably both.
Funny, isn't it? She was going to be deported as an illegal alien. Good old 1939. His house looked like Green Acres and Mr Haney in the truck. Glenn Ford is one of my all times favorite.
Tops its the funniest thing a real freshman 20 Acres in Arizona 😅 it gets more interesting on the journey Soaring to great heights superbly made He was made for movies first time wotch and dare to say I'd watch his movies they are goodies 🤣
I loved this movie. Happy ending and all the nuances of the script, soundtrack, production, editing and all the cinematic nuances as well. It was a dream team of crew who did this
Glenford did good for his first movie who would have thought it was his first movie always a good actor from the beginning it was delightful this movie
Realizing what a turkey they had with this B-movie, 20th Century Fox tagged it with a title so long ("Heaven With A Barbed Wire Fence") that it could barely fit on a movie marquee. Glenn Ford's voice in this movie is high pitched, almost squeaky, and his role is written as lame and annoying. Jean Rogers is a bright spot in another wise drab movie that goes nowhere. Richard (Nicholas) Conte plays Richard Conte, a tough and cynical customer. After being cleaned out by Conte in a card game among Hollywood "friends," movie producer Mike Todd complained about Conte sandbagging him, being a card pro. Fox studio head Darryl Zanuck must have hated Ford to dump him right after the movie's filming during June and July of 1939. Zanuck did not wait for the movie's release in the then dead period of Christmas week 1939 to boot Ford. As an actor, Ford was better in his later movies. He couldn't be worse.
Thanks for the movie! No big deal! My last career I was paid to be a professional story teller…. 14 years…I couldn’t act my way out of a ziplock bag! Glen Ford is the real deal! At any age!
This movie had it all. Captured the time and people that lived. A true great American movie 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿. 1939 considering what was about to happen historically. This movie was right on time. Ford made his mark, excellent cast. Very enjoyable!
